Mark Daigneault Summer League Head Coach Mark Daigneault (DAYG-nalt) enters his third season as head coach of the Oklahoma City Blue and he is set to make his debut as head coach of the Thunder’s summer league squad. The Blue posted a 19-31 record in 2015-16 and led the NBA D-League in rebounding with 48.1 boards a game. Daigneault joined Billy Donovan’s Thunder coaching staff midseason on Feb. 17 in place of Thunder assistant Maurice Cheeks, who was sidelined for six weeks due to hip surgery. Daigneault remained with the Thunder for the conclusion of the 2015-16 season and entirety of the Thunder’s postseason run to the Western Conference Finals. In his first season at the helm of the Thunder’s NBA D-League team, Daigneault led the Blue to a 28-22 record and an appearance in the NBADL Western Conference Semifinals. Under his watch the past two seasons, the Blue has seen three players called up to NBA rosters (Josh Huestis, Dwight Buycks and Reggie Williams) and four Thunder players assigned (Grant Jerrett, Josh Huestis, Mitch McGary and Cameron Payne). Daigneault came to Oklahoma City after spending his previous four years working under Donovan at the University of Florida, where he most recently held the position of Assistant to the Head Coach. Throughout his four years at Florida, the Gators totaled a record of 120-30 (.800), won three SEC titles and advanced to the Elite Eight each year. In his final season with UF (2013-14), the Gators became the first SEC team to go 18-0 in conference play and went on to win the SEC Championship and advance to the Final Four. Prior to his time at Florida, Daigneault spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Holy Cross. During Daigneault’s tenure, the Crusaders finished as runner-up of the Patriot League Championship in 2008-09. A 2007 graduate of the University of Connecticut, Daigneault served as a student manager with the Huskies under Jim Calhoun from 2003-07. While at UCONN, the Huskies won the 2004 NCAA Championship and claimed three Big East titles, posting a combined record of 103-32 (.763).A native of Leominster, Mass., Daigneault holds a master’s degree in sports management from the University of Florida. applied sciences Article Offensive and Defensive Plus–Minus Player Ratings for Soccer Lars Magnus Hvattum Faculty of Logistics, Molde University College, 6410 Molde, Norway; [email protected] Received: 15 September 2020; Accepted: 16 October 2020; Published: 20 October 2020 Abstract: Rating systems play an important part in professional sports, for example, as a source of entertainment for fans, by influencing decisions regarding tournament seedings, by acting as qualification criteria, or as decision support for bookmakers and gamblers. Creating good ratings at a team level is challenging, but even more so is the task of creating ratings for individual players of a team. This paper considers a plus–minus rating for individual players in soccer, where a mathematical model is used to distribute credit for the performance of a team as a whole onto the individual players appearing for the team. The main aim of the work is to examine whether the individual ratings obtained can be split into offensive and defensive contributions, thereby addressing the lack of defensive metrics for soccer players. As a result, insights are gained into how elements such as the effect of player age, the effect of player dismissals, and the home field advantage can be broken down into offensive and defensive consequences. Keywords: association football; linear regression; regularization; ranking 1. Introduction Soccer has become a large global business, and significant amounts of capital are at stake when the competitions at the highest level are played. While soccer is a team sport, the attention of media and fans is often directed towards individual players. An understanding of the game therefore also involves an ability to dissect the contributions of individual players to the team as a whole.

THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.
