Over 800 people gathered recipients. on Saturday night to share in the celebration of educa- tion and spectacular community leaders. Decadent food and drinks were shared between coworkers, friends, and the Denver community. In attendance were Gov. John Hickenlooper, Lt. Gov. Joe Garcia, Mayor Guillermo Vidal and mayor hopefuls including James Mejia and City Councilman Doug Linkhart. Being honored was first lady of Colorado, Helen Thorpe, as the recipient of the Sol Trujillo National Lifetime Achievement Award. Thorpe read excerpts from her book “Just Like Us” that follows young Latina girls into womanhood and still highlights their struggles with the current immigration laws. Touching and insightful, Thorpe awed the audience with her message and grace. Next at the microphone was LAEF scholarship recipi- ent and sophomore at the University of Colorado at Boulder Wendy Guardado. The extremely eloquent recipi- ent of the Lola A. Salazar Student of the Year Award had words that inspired tears and not just to her family, but for those who were hearing her for the first time. Guardado really brought the gala theme of esperanza home. An inspiring video of three more students receiving the LAEF scholarship really showed the attendees how the organization touches so many lives. Comedian Johnny Sanchez had the crowd laughing at their tables. Somewhat controversial, Sanchez touched on each ethnic group in his routine. The Mexicano from California had a very unique repertoire of material and his impersonations were some of the best out there.
