:' HD28 - UZ .M414 ^3> WORKING PAPER ALFRED P. SLOAN SCHOOL OF MANAGEMENT Does Product Design Really Determine 80% of Manufacturing Cost? by Karl T. Ulrich Scott A. Pearson WP #3601-93 August 1993 MASSACHUSETTS INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY 50 MEMORIAL DRIVE CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS 02139 Does Product Design Really Determine 80% of Manufacturing Cost? by Karl T. Ulrich Scott A. Pearson WP #3601-93 August 1993 J 2 1993 Does Product Design Really Determine 80% of Manufacturing Cost? Karl T. Ulrich* and Scott A. Pearson Massachusetts Institute of Technology Sloan School of Management Cambridge, Massachusetts 02139 Abstract Many design researchers and practitioners motivate their work with the claim that 80% of the eventual manufacturing cost of a product is determined by the product design. The meaning of this assertion has not been well defined, nor has much empirical evidence been presented to support it. This paper addresses the question of how much product design influences the manufacturing cost of a product. In doing so, we define the research question formally, we develop a methodology for answering the question, and we provide a specific answer, under a particular set of assumptions, for a class of high-volume, electromechanical consumer products — automatic drip coffee makers. Our methodology includes product archaeology, the use of the product artifact as a source of data, and manufacturing cost modeling. We find that for coffee makers, the variation in manufacturing costs attributable to differences in product design is slightly smaller in magnitude than the variation in costs attributable to differences in manufacturing systems, for a specific range of assumed manufacturing system parameters.

The TroughVeyor system allows multiple operators to scrap food waste anywhere along the trough of fast moving recirculated water that carries waste to the disposer. The TroughVeyor system consumes half the fresh water when compared to the slow fresh water trough method. Trough Collector™ An alternative solution is the Salvajor Trough Collector system. It has the same benefits as the TroughVeyor system but does not utilize a disposer. By collecting fibrous and non-soluble food waste, the Trough Collector system can reduce bulk waste by up to 50% while using only 2 gallons of fresh water per minute. An ideal solution for collecting food waste for composting! m.salvajor.com for Product Video #1 BRAND in FOOD WASTE SOLUTIONS Specifications Since 1944 • salvajor.com Full Product Line TABLE OF CONTENTS Fall 2013 ARTICLES Thank You Conference Sponsors . 5 Did You Know......Botulism? . .40 The Leadership Ladder . 7 By Linda Mills, MBA, RD, FADA By John Forquer ACFSA Loses a Good Friend . 41 Bringing Back the Farm . 8 By Teddie Mitchell, CCFP By Angela Lund VA Chapter Celebrates 25th Anniversary .
