Maryland Theatre-Better Hearing Night Thursday, August 20, 2015 * 7:00pm The Maryland Theatre is proud to announce it now has a new state-of-the-art wireless assistive listening system to allow those with hearing loss to enjoy a rich, crystal clear performance. The new Hearing loop is a system that requires NO additional equipment and directly connects with most hearing aids. The sound from the stage transmits directly to the T coil of any hearing aid to provide crystal clear sound. This will allow those who live with hearing loss to truly enjoy our theatre. Please join the Maryland Theatre and Hagerstown Hearing for an introduction and demonstration of the new Hearing Loop. Downtown Summer Slide Festival Saturday, August 29, 2015 - 11:00am to 4:00pm The Downtown Summer Slide Festival will feature an 825-foot-long water slide down West Washington Street in Hagerstown, live Bluegrass & Americana music inside the beer garden in University Plaza as well as FREE kid's activities, food trucks and vendors. The Washington County Museum of Fine Arts in association with the Art Faculty and the Music Department at Shepherd University, Shepherdstown, WV will host a Gallery Talk on the Art Faculty Exhibition currently on view at the Museum and the annual Music Faculty Recital on Sunday, August 30, 2015. The Gallery Talk will begin at 1:30 p.m., followed by the recital at 2:30 p.m. and a reception, hosted by the Museum's volunteer organization, The Singer Society will be held at 3:30 p.m. The Art Faculty Exhibition includes works by Rhonda Smith, Christian Benefiel, Sonya Evanisko, Shannon McCarthy, Stephanie Thulin, Rick Bruner, David Modler, Michael Mendez, Evan Bogges, Ben Schonberger and Robert Farmer. The Recital will present faculty members Joseph Regan and accompanist Dr. Joseph Satava in concert. The concert is open to the public with a $10.00 admission fee for non-members of the Museum and Free for Museum members and children 12 and under. The Looking Glass is an exhibit of photographic prints by Taneisha Harrison, from volume one of her series of photo books. The book features artful portraits and brief interviews with young women from Hagerstown and the surrounding area that Taneisha finds to be inspiring. This exhibit will highlight pieces of the interviews along with large portraits and smaller photos of each woman interviewed. Refreshments will be served and the artist will be present during the reception. Organized by the Reading Public Museum For information call 301-739-5727 MARYLAND SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PARTNERS WITH MARYLAND TALENT EDUCATION CENTER TO PROVIDE VIOLIN CLASSES FOR YOUNG BEGINNERS The Maryland Symphony Orchestra and the Maryland Talent Education Center are partnering to provide group violin lessons to beginning students in grades 1 through 3. The classes will begin on Saturday, September 12 and continue each Saturday through December 12. The classes, being held at John Wesley United Methodist Church (129 N. Potomac Street, Hagerstown), will be offered at 9, 10, or 11 a.m. Enrollment will be limited to 8 students per class. Parents are required to attend classes and participate with their children. For more information, email [email protected] or go to www.potomacplaymakers.org Valley Art Association announces up-coming Exhibits: 2015 Shows Planned August/September 1915 North Gallery Show: "The Art, Culture, and History of Hagerstown" VAA has a show in the North Gallery that illuminates the art, culture and history of Hagerstown to show art, historical artifacts, and items that depict interesting aspects of Hagerstown over the years. Each painting, artifact, or other item has an associated narrative. September/October - Hospice Show. Hospice Call to Artists In commemoration of its 35th anniversary, Hospice of Washington County, Inc. is issuing a call to visual artists for a work that it will use in publicity and promotional materials in the coming year. Interested artists are encouraged to submit up to two (2) entries. The theme for the artwork is "Transformation." Submissions for this call are limited to two dimensional works, including painting, collage, works on paper and mixed media images. No photography, unless such images are included in a mixed media piece. The maximum dimension on any side is 36 inches. The deadline has been extended to noon, September 15, 2015. Up to 30 submissions will be exhibited at the Valley Art Association's Mansion House Gallery between September 25th and October 18th. Ten finalists will be chosen and exhibited at the Anniversary event. From these, one work will be selected for purchase for $350, announced at Hospice's 35th Anniversary Reception at Fountain Head Country Club on October 18, 2015, and be used in Hospice publicity in the coming year. The Maryland Theatre Home Free: Don't It Feel Good Tour Tuesday, September 29, 2015 * 7:30pm When country vocal band Home Free was crowned champion of NBC's The Sing-Off, their victory was by no means the beginnings of a career for the five country stars from Minnesota... rather it was a satisfying culmination of nearly a decade of hard work and commitment to a vocal craft growing in popularity.
