Academic Course on the Subject: The Bond Market and its Derivatives, Prof Yaacov Bodoch, January – February 2009 For all those who thought that professionalism, understanding and sophistication, as well as emotions and uncertainty, are the domain of the stock market alone, the bond market proved during the course of the past year just how much this market can cough up surprises. Currently, the lion’s share of the portfolios of the institutional investors in Israel consists of government and corporate bonds and their derivatives. Over the next few years, assets from the global markets will be added to the local portfolios, markets in which sophisticated investors will be able to achieve high yields, of course while taking risks. In-depth and sophisticated understanding, with the intelligent use of analytical and hedging tools, will become a necessity.

With the objective of developing an in-depth understanding of the manner of costing and the risk factors in investments of this type, Prof. Yaacov Bodoch conducted, for the fifth year running, an advanced and comprehensive course with the participation of investment and risk managers in the field of bonds and their derivatives, who are active in the banking and insurance industries and in the private sector.

The Media Innovation Lab at IDC Herzliya (miLAB) is a research and prototyping lab that explores the future of media and technology. This year students both from Computer Science and Communications were set to explore several domains including – How can technology and media help teens to exercise more, How to make family members feel closer, How to enrich our Dr. Oren Zuckerman outdoor life with rich media, etc.

The program is filled with activities all year round which are an essential part of the creation process. For example there was a hands-on workshop in December that emphasized that innovation can only grow from collaboration and trial. Industrial design students from HIT in Holon (Institute of technology) were invited, and in 2 days, a total of 8 hours, collaborative groups invented numerous ideas inspired by the dreidel for Hanukah.

I recently caught up with Meli after she had spent a rare day at the beach – the first times in ages she’d been able to kick back and enjoy time with friends. “I get home every 3 weeks from the army, but it’s never enough,” Saljan told me, “I have to do shopping, wash clothes, that sort of thing.”

A ‘lone soldier’ – the term given to young men and women serving in the IDF who have no family in Israel support them – Saljan, an RRIS graduate, is now almost one and a half years into her army service. Born in Israel and raised in Turkey, she moved back to Israel by herself and earned a degree in business at IDC. After postponing the army until the end of her studies, it was time to take the fateful next step.

“I wasn’t sure whether to go into the army or not,” Saljan told me. “I was Major Jonathan Davis (res.) IDF Spokesperson - served his IDF 23, and though I wanted to stay in Israel and volunteer to give something mandatory service in the Paratrooper Reconnaissance Unit
