Enrolled Copy H.C.R. 12 1 CONCURRENT RESOLUTION CELEBRATING THE 100TH 2 BIRTHDAY OF JOE MCQUEEN 3 2019 GENERAL SESSION 4 STATE OF UTAH 5 Chief Sponsor: Sandra Hollins 6 Senate Sponsor: Luz Escamilla 7 8 LONG TITLE 9 General Description: 10 This concurrent resolution celebrates the 100th birthday of Joe McQueen. 11 Highlighted Provisions: 12 This resolution: 13 < recognizes Joe McQueen as a nationally renowned jazz musician; and 14 < acknowledges Mr. McQueen's upcoming 100th birthday on May 30, 2019. 15 Special Clauses: 16 None 17 18 Be it resolved by the Legislature of the state of Utah, the Governor concurring therein: 19 WHEREAS, Joe McQueen was born on May 30, 1919, in Dallas, Texas and was raised 20 in Ardmore, Oklahoma; 21 WHEREAS, since the age of 16, Mr. McQueen has been playing the saxophone and 22 performing jazz music; 23 WHEREAS, Mr. McQueen traveled to Ogden, Utah in the 1940s and has resided there 24 ever since; 25 WHEREAS, Mr. McQueen was the first African-American in Utah to play at 26 previously white-only establishments and to have a mixed-race band; 27 WHEREAS, Mr. McQueen performed in Ogden with fellow jazz celebrities such as 28 Charlie Parker, Chet Baker, Paul Gonsalves, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and 29 Dizzy Gillespie and toured throughout the rocky mountain west; H.C.R. 12 Enrolled Copy 30 WHEREAS, in 2002, Governor Michael Leavitt declared April 18 as "Joe McQueen 31 Day"; 32 WHEREAS, Mr. McQueen continues to perform live in Ogden's music venues; and 33 WHEREAS, on May 30, 2019, Mr. McQueen will celebrate his 100th birthday: 34 NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the state of Utah, the Governor 35 concurring therein, recognizes Joe McQueen as a nationally renowned jazz musician and 36 celebrates Mr. McQueen's 100th birthday. - 2 -.

    Joe McQueen and friends Ten at 86* *Ten tracks at 86 years old Biography Joe McQueen has been a professional jazz musician for over seventy years, turning ‘Pro’ at the tender age of sixteen. He was introduced to the saxophone a few years earlier by his cousin, Herschel Evans, who played in Count Basie’s band in the mid -1930s. Born in 1919 in Dallas, Texas, Joe was raised in Ardmore, Oklahoma, where he played tuba and then saxophone in the Ardmore High School band. Fast forward to 1945, when Joe and his wife, Thelma, were on the road as he was touring in a jazz band. While en-route from Las Vegas, the bandleader gambled away the troupe’s earnings, stranding them in Ogden, Utah. Joe and Thelma decided to stay in Ogden and McQueen reformed the band there. This turned out to be a serendipitous move because just after WWII, Ogden, a major stop on the railroad between San Francisco and Kansas City, had become a hotspot for jazz music. Since settling in Ogden, McQueen has performed there with such jazz luminaries as Charlie Parker, Chet Baker (a fellow Oklahoman), Paul Gonzalez, Lester Young, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. Joe continued to tour in the region, playing in Idaho Falls with Hoagy Carmichael. Outside of his musical life, McQueen has worked as a truck mechanic and auto- motive technology instructor at Ogden’s Weber State University. Through 2005 and beyond, Joe continues as a full-time volunteer elder-care worker for human services in Weber County, Utah, where he assists infirmed senior citizens.

Once again, I find myself at the helm of the Physics Department as department chair. Although anyone who has served as a department chair might agree that it’s a dubious appointment comprised mostly of more meetings and administrative paper-shuffling, I’m sure George Glander would agree with me that one of the real pleasures of being chair (again) is the opportunity to share our news with you. I took over from George as chair this past summer after his five year term finished up. Little did he know that it wouldn’t be back to “just teaching” when he rotated off; late this summer George was asked by Dean Grady Ballenger to be an associate dean for the college. And so, he has “joined the dark side” and now spends half his time fielding “deanly” issues. We in the sciences like that one of the associate deans is a scientist, and fortunately for the Physics Department, George continues to anchor our majors by setting their foundation in his introductory University Physics course. To assist with the teaching load now that George is an associate dean, we have “imported” Tom Vogel, assistant professor of mathematics. Tom’s professional work bridges math and physics and he is a well-liked math prof; we are thrilled to have him join us over here in Sage. This semester, Tom is teaching Quantum Mechanics II, freeing me up to teach Advanced Lab Techniques which has usually been taught by George.

Mayor Michael P. Caldwell will also present McQueen with a key to the city. Joe McQueen is a legendary jazz saxophonist who has not only entertained Ogden audiences for decades, but was also an activist for equal rights and integration during the Civil Rights movement. McQueen’s 100th birthday is May 30th, 2019. McQueen, along with his family and friends will attend the Council Meeting to receive the proclamation. Corinna was unexpectedly and urgently admitted to hospital on Thursday afternoon, and subsequently has operations on both her kidneys. If her obs improve markedly she may be out on Monday but we are not counting on it. Her latest blood results show no change, but whether or not there should have been changes twelve hours after the operation I cannot comment. She appears to be in good spirits. Once again, thank you for all your kind comments and support I am going to try and keep the blogs and things going, and I hope that you will forgive me both for the lateness of this issue, and for the fact that the news pages, radio shows and the clickable links are missing. I will keep everyone posted about what is happening, and I would like to think that the next issue of this magazine will come out more or less on schedule Many of you have told me to forget about everything else but Corinna until she is out of hospital, but leaving things that need to be done is bad for my mental health, so I will work as much as I can, as much for my own sanity than for any other reason.
