JOINT PROCLAMATION DECLARING MAY 30, 2019 “JOE McQUEEN DAY” IN OGDEN CITY

Action: Adopt joint proclamation

Summary This joint proclamation declares May 30, 2019 as “Joe McQueen Day” in Ogden City.

Mayor Michael P. Caldwell will also present McQueen with a key to the city.

Joe McQueen is a legendary saxophonist who has not only entertained Ogden audiences for decades, but was also an activist for equal rights and integration during the Civil Rights movement. McQueen’s 100th birthday is May 30th, 2019.

McQueen, along with his family and friends will attend the Council Meeting to receive the proclamation.

PROCLAIMING MAY 30, 2019 AS “JOE MCQUEEN DAY” IN OGDEN CITY

WHEREAS, An iconic jazz saxophonist, Joe McQueen has captivated Utah audiences for decades. He was instrumental in putting Ogden on the map as a hot spot for jazz music. Joe has enriched our community through his talents and dedication; and

WHEREAS, Joe McQueen began playing jazz music professionally at the age of 14. In 1945, he moved to Ogden with his wife, Thelma. They have lived in Ogden for over 73 years. Since his arrival in Ogden, there has always been an increased excitement for jazz music in the area; and

WHEREAS, For seven decades, Joe’s music has brought happiness and joy to residents of Ogden. His music has inspired and unified our community. Through his time as a musician, Joe has performed with some of the biggest names in jazz music such as , , and ; and

WHEREAS, For as incredible of a musician Joe is, he is an even better person. He treats everyone he meets with dignity and respect. Joe has always been a strong advocate of equal rights and used his music to advocate integration; and

WHEREAS, The Ogden musician celebrates his 100th birthday on May 30th. He still performs regularly with his jazz group, The Joe McQueen Quartet, and shows no signs of slowing down; and

WHEREAS, Joe McQueen is a jazz legend, who epitomizes the Ogden spirit. His influence and impact on the Ogden community is remarkable. His legacy will continue to live on for generations to come.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that the Ogden City Council and Mayor Michael P. Caldwell hereby proclaim May 30, 2019 as

“JOE MCQUEEN DAY” IN OGDEN CITY.

We proudly recognize Joe for his contributions to our community and present him with a key to the City of Ogden. We wish him a happy birthday and all of the best in his future endeavors.
