Not only did it lead to the deaths of tens of thousands of Spanish soldiers - 10,000 of them in one battle alone in 1921 - but it also led indirectly to the Spanish Civil War and spurted on the nascent nationalist cause in Morocco itself. Yet the events of the war and the per- sonalities of its leading protagonists, at least on the Moroccan side, are curiously little known. nor is the innovative nature of their convictions fully understood. Dr. Pennell, who has spent many years study- ing the Rif war, has attempted, in this book, to analyse the motivations of the Rifi tribes and their leaders. Using hitherto untapped archival material, he shows that the war, far from being merely an expression of tribal irridentism in the face of European occupation, as fundamentally an attempt to mobilise and reform Islamic val- ues to confront the colonial experience. The attempt failed, but it left behind a legacy of memory and inspiration that still finds its echo today. I would like to thank my supervisor, Dr. B.S.J. lsserlin. I am also very grateful indeed to Dr. K.L. Brown of Manchester University who gave me very generous help indeed. I worked in the following libraries and wish to thank their staff: the Brotherton Library of the University of Leeds, John Rylands Library of the University of Manchester, British Library, the Biblioteca Nacional in Madrid, the National Library in Rabat, Morocco, and the Library of the City of Ceuta. Most of the research was done in Archives and I am grateful to the staff of the Spanish Army Archives - the Servicio Historico Militar - in Madrid, the French Service Historique de l'Armée de la Terre in Vincennes, the Spanish and French Foreign Ministry Archives and the Public Record Office in London. Finally, my gratitude is extended to Mr. Gordon Phillips, then archivist of the Times. I also relied heavily on various friends and acquaintances: Professor Reginald Brown and Dr. Ronald Ceuta of the Spanish Department at Leeds University and Dr. Michael Young of the Department of Semitic Studies there, Dr. Peter Sluglett of Durham University and Dr. Andrew Major of the National University of Singapore all helped. Dr. Joanna de Groot of York University gave me vital encouragement at bad moments. The late Idris al-Khattabi provided me with considerable amounts of information about his father. Muhammad al-Mansur helped to decipher often illegible documents. The mistakes are, of course, my own. Three other people must not be omitted. George ioff6 helped in many ways: criticism, information, and accommodation, for all of which I am most grateful. David Hart, a walking encyclopaedia of the Rif, has been consistently generous with information and advice, and I owe him a debt of gratitude beyond what I can express here.

Mots-clés : Dialectologie, Préhilalien, Jbala, Maroc, Géographie linguistique, Variation, Variante, Arabe, Substrat Abstract: It is generally considered that the territory of Jbala, in the north-west of Morocco, is bounded on the south by the Oued Ouergha Basin, on the north by the Strait of Gibraltar and on the north-east by the Rif and the Oriental region. The dialect of Jbala, pertaining to the prehilalian type, would be limited to this geographical region. However, as it has been suggested and indicated by some colonial times Semitists and confirmed by recent work, some dialects showing similar features to Jbala dialects are attested in the southeast and southwest of this geographical area.

HAMELIN Ph.D. 2016 i SOCIAL MARKETING AND THE CORRUPTION CONUNDRUM IN MOROCCO: AN EXPLORATORY ANALYSIS NICOLAS HAMELIN A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the University of East London for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy February, 2016 ii Abstract The modern world is characterised by socio-economic disruptions, civil unrests, and weakening of many societal institutions, amongst many other challenges to our social fabric. Therefore, scholars are increasingly scouring a wide variety of conceptual prisms to seek explanations and possible solutions to those problems contemporaneously manifesting themselves. The pervading force of corruption, across the globe, remains a major concern among nations, multilateral agencies, such as Transparency International, and more profoundly in major business and public policy discourses. For many developing countries, especially those with weak institutions, high levels of corruption are causatively associated with high levels of poverty, poor economic performance and under-development. Against this background, using the Kingdom of Morocco as a contextual base, this thesis explores the growing incidence of corruption, which has stunted the nation’s positive development, as well as its triggers, antecedents and consequences. Whilst the literature is replete with treatments of corruption across time and space, such treatments have focused on social and macroeconomic underpinnings but largely lack rigorous marketing-framed explorations. Following on from this lacuna, this thesis situates the treatment of corruption in Morocco within the conceptual frame of social marketing — a demonstrably robust platform for analysing societal issues and, indeed, a validated behavioural intervention model.

In Morocco, Leishmania infantum species is the main causative agents of visceral leishmaniasis (VL). However, cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) due to L. infantum has been reported sporadically. Moreover, the recent geographical expansion of L. infantum in the Mediterranean subregion leads us to suggest whether the nonsporadic cases of CL due to this species are present. In this context, this review is written to establish a retrospective study of cutaneous and visceral leishmaniasis in northern Morocco between 1997 and 2018 and also to conduct a molecular study to identify the circulating species responsible for the recent cases of leishmaniases in this region.

B.P. 703, Rabat, Marocco. Abstract: This study presents the deformations of earth's surface in Tangiers (Northern Morocco). The follow- up of these deformations was made by the Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar technique (InSAR). The application of InSAR in an urban environment allows to obtain a spatial distribution of the ground deformation within subcentimeter resolution. The InSAR time series analysis methods give an accurate estimation of the deformation rates. In this work we use ROI-PAC software to generate the interferograms from images acquired by Envisat between 2003 and 2010. In order to calculate the deformation rates (on the line of sight) by time series analysis we applied pi-rate software. The stacking map shows major uplift up to 20 mm/year in the coastal and southern zone of Tangier, and subsidence of the soil that can reach 15mm/year in some areas. To evaluate these results, we used the interferometric coherence as a measurement of the reliability of the interferometric phase. We calculated also the error map. All the deformation areas present a very high coherence and the associated error is almost negligible, also the atmospheric noise level is reduced during time series analysis.
