You'll like Artie Kipps!By Skip HughesWell-penned as are many stories from the prolific pen of H.G. Wells, and laugh-out-loud funny as well, "Kipps" was rendered on stage and screen as the great hit musical, "Half A Sixpence," starring the amazing Tommy Steele in both venues. "Kipps" holds some comparison to the great Dickens novel, "Oliver Twist," also rendered as a huge musical hit on stage and screen. Artie Kipps is not so well-known as Oliver Twist, but deserves better. This book is a first-rate read. After you read it, watch the Tommy Steele DVD if you haven't already.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's a bit of all right!By CustomerThis is a wonderful novel by H. G. Wells. This is a story of a young man's life experience and coming of age (and note - this is not a science fiction story). I understand that H. G. Wells, like Kipps, served for some time as a draper's apprentice as a young man, and I expect that there is a personal investment and attachment to this naive young Kipps on Wells' part. It is well written, sweet, and humorous. I recommend it highly.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. HG Wells isn't all about scifi. He could take on Jane Austen.By Lit PickerHG Wells wrote a lot more than science fiction. This is a humorous tale, sort of rags-to-riches. What I really like about Wells' writing is his use of rich language, without being extravagant. This story takes his ability at clever descriptions to a different genre. Kipps: The Story of a Simple Soul is a novel by H. G. Wells, first published in 1905. Humorous yet sympathetic, this perceptive social novel is generally regarded as a masterpiece, and was the author's own favourite work. Kipps is a rags-to-riches study in class differences, and the novel's chief dramatic interest is how the protagonist negotiates the intellectual, moral, and emotional difficulties that come with wealth and a change of social station. Kipps is the only character in the novel who is fully developed, and all events are narrated from his point of view. A restrained Wellsian narrator's voice offers occasional comment, but only toward the end of the novel does this voice speak out in a page- long denunciation of "the ruling power of this land, Stupidity," which is "a monster, a lumpish monster, like some great clumsy griffin thing, like the Crystal Palacelabyrinthodon, like Coote, like the leaden Goddess of the Dunciad, like some fat, proud flunkey, like pride, like indolence, like all that is darkening and heavy and obstructive in life. About the AuthorOften called the father of science fiction, British author Herbert George (H. G.) Wells literary works are notable for being some of the first titles of the science fiction genre, and include such famed titles as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Island of Doctor Moreau, and The Invisible Man. Despite being fixedly associated with science fiction, Wells wrote extensively in other genres and on many subjects, including history, society and politics, and was heavily influenced by Darwinism. His first book, Anticipations of the Reaction of Mechanical and Scientific Progress Upon Human Life and Thought, offered predictions about what technology and society would look like in the year 2000, many of which have proven accurate. Wells went on to pen over fifty novels, numerous non-fiction books, and dozens of short stories. His legacy has had an overwhelming influence on science fiction, popular culture, and even on technological and scientific innovation. Wells died in 1946 at the age of 79.
