You'll like Artie Kipps!By Skip HughesWell-penned as are many stories from the prolific pen of H.G. Wells, and laugh-out-loud funny as well, "Kipps" was rendered on stage and screen as the great hit musical, "Half A Sixpence," starring the amazing Tommy Steele in both venues. "Kipps" holds some comparison to the great Dickens novel, "Oliver Twist," also rendered as a huge musical hit on stage and screen. Artie Kipps is not so well-known as Oliver Twist, but deserves better. This book is a first-rate read. After you read it, watch the Tommy Steele DVD if you haven't already.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. It's a bit of all right!By CustomerThis is a wonderful novel by H. G. Wells. This is a story of a young man's life experience and coming of age (and note - this is not a science fiction story). I understand that H. G. Wells, like Kipps, served for some time as a draper's apprentice as a young man, and I expect that there is a personal investment and attachment to this naive young Kipps on Wells' part. It is well written, sweet, and humorous. I recommend it highly.1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. HG Wells isn't all about scifi. He could take on Jane Austen.By Lit PickerHG Wells wrote a lot more than science fiction. This is a humorous tale, sort of rags-to-riches. What I really like about Wells' writing is his use of rich language, without being extravagant. This story takes his ability at clever descriptions to a different genre. This is a reproduction of a book published before 1923. This book may have occasional imperfections such as missing or blurred pages, poor pictures, errant marks, etc. that were either part of the original artifact, or were introduced by the scanning process. Scribner's, 1912 About the AuthorHerbert George "H. G." Wells (21 September 1866 ndash; 13 August 1946) was an English writer, now best known for his work in the science fiction genre. He was also a prolific writer in many other genres, including contemporary novels, history, politics and social commentary, even writing textbooks and rules for war games. Wells is sometimes called "The Father of Science Fiction". His most notable science fiction works include The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, The Invisible Man and The Island of Doctor Moreau. Wells's earliest specialised training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also from an early date an outspoken socialist, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathising with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of "Journalist." Most of his later novels were not science fiction. Some described lower-middle class life (Kipps; The History of Mr Polly), leading him to be touted as a worthy successor to Charles Dickens, but Wells described a range of social strata and even attempted, in Tono-Bungay (1909), a diagnosis of English society as a whole.
