Rostrum well developed and extending beyond eyes, always bearing more than 3 upper teeth (in- cluding those on carapace); base of eyestalk with styliform projection on inner surface, but without tubercle on inner border. Both upper and lower antennular flagella of similar length, attached to tip of antennular peduncle. 1 Carapace lacks both postorbital and postantennal spines, cervical groove in- distinct or absent. Exopod present only on first maxilliped. All 5 pairs of legs well devel- 2 oped, fourth leg bearing a single well-devel- 3rd and 4th pleopods 4 single-branched oped arthrobranch (hidden beneath 3 carapace). In males, endopod of second pair 5 of pleopods (abdominal appendages) with appendix masculina only. Third and fourth pleopods single-branched. Telson generally armed with a pair of fixed lateral spines. Colour: body colour varies from dark brown to reddish; often with distinct spots or colour markings on carapace and/or abdomen - such colour markings are specific and very useful in distinguishing the species. Habitat, biology, and fisheries: All members of this family are marine and can be found from shallow to deep waters (to depths of more than 400 m). They are all benthic and occur on both soft and hard bottoms. Their sizes are generally small, about 2 to 8 cm, but some species can reach a body length over 15 cm. The sexes are easily distinguished by the presence of a large copulatory organ (petasma) on the first pair of pleopods of males, while the females have the posterior thoracic sternites modified into a large sperm receptacle process (thelycum) which holds the spermatophores or sperm sacs (usually whitish or yellowish in colour) after mating. -

Tasmanian Geological Survey Tasmania Record 1998/05 Rock and gravel resources of King Island by C. R. Calver Summary The known gravel resources on King Island are limited. Material for road works is currently sourced from two pits (Reekara and Pearshape) operated by the King Island Council, and from a mine overburden waste dump at Grassy. Concrete aggregate is sourced from beach shingle on the west coast. The Reekara and Pearshape pits are known to have acid drainage problems. Mineral Resources Tasmania and the Department of Environment and Land Management have agreed that the Reekara pit should be closed immediately and rehabilitated, and that the Pearshape pit should be closed and rehabilitated within two years. Mining of the beach shingle, which is deleterious to the coastal environment, will also cease within two years. Thereafter concrete aggregate will need to be produced from hard rock. Future supplies of road construction gravel may continue to be sourced from the Grassy dump, from a new site at Counsel Hill, and from one or two other small existing pits. For good quality road sealing material and concrete aggregate, it is recommended that sites in Precambrian amphibolite east of Pegarah, and in Tertiary basalt in the north of the island, be investigated. Abstract South America is diverse in climatic and thus vegetational zonation, and even the uniformly looking tropical rain forests are a mosaic of different habitats depending on the soils, the regional climate and also the geological history. An important part of the nutrient webs of the rain forests is formed by the terrestrial Isopoda, or Oniscidea, the only truly terrestrial taxon within the Crustacea. They are important, because they participate in soil formation by breaking up leaf litter when foraging on the fungi and bacteria growing on them. After a century of research on this interesting taxon, a revision of the terrestrial isopod taxa from South America and some of the Antillean Islands, which are traditionally placed in the family Philosciidae, was performed in the last years to establish monophyletic genera. Within this study, the phylogenetic relationships of these genera are elucidated in the light of phylogenetic systematics. Several new taxa are recognized, which are partially neotropical, partially also found on other continents, particularly the old Gondwanian fragments. The monophyla are checked for their distributional patterns which are compared with those patterns from other taxa from South America and some correspondence was found. The distributional patterns are analysed with respect to the evolution of the Oniscidea and also with respect to the geological history of their habitats. -

Introduction Very little has been published so far on the Palaemoninae of Vietnam, and most of the species from the area mentioned in the literature belong to the genus Macro- brachium Bate, 1868. The present paper is the result of about 20 years of collecting and studying the Palaemonid prawns of Vietnam by the author, and deals with the Palaemoninae, with the exception of the genus Macrobrachium, to which a special study will be devoted. It intends to give an annotated catalogue of all the species known from the area with a description and illustration of their characters, and the variability of these. Apart from an enumeration of the material examined, a discussion is provided of occurrence, ecology, biology and economic importance of the species. -

The arid Yilgarn region of Western Australia contains numerous isolated calcrete aquifers, within which a diverse subterranean fauna has been discovered. Genetic and morphological studies of subterranean dytiscid beetles and amphipods have suggested that individual calcretes are equivalent to closed island habitats, which have been isolated for millions of years. Here we test this ‘subterranean island’ hypothesis further by phylogeographic analyses of subterranean oniscidean isopods (Haloniscus), using mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequence data derived from the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene. Phylogenetic and population genetic analyses provided evidence for significant phylogeographic structuring of isopod populations, with evidence for at least 24 divergent mtDNA lineages, each restricted in their distribution to a single calcrete aquifer. The high level of divergence among calcrete populations (generally >25%) and several mtDNA lineages within calcretes (>16%) suggests that each lineage is likely to represent a distinct species. -

ITE contributes to, and draws upon, the collective knowledge of the 13 sister institutes which make up the Natural Environment Research Council, spanning all the environmental sciences. The Institute studies the factors determining the structure, composition and processes of land and freshwater systems, and of individual plant and animal species. It is developing a sounder scientific basis for predicting and modelling environmental trends arising from natural or man- made change. The results of this research are available to those responsible for the protection, management and wise use of our natural resources. One quarter of ITE's work is research commissioned by customers, such as the Department of Environment, the European Economic Community, the Nature Conservancy Council and the Overseas Development Administration.
