The UNC Graduate Council reviewed Appendix A and was broadly supportive of the proposed executive DBA program. The concerns they expressed primarily focused on student and societal demand and who can serve on the program’s dissertation committees. These concerns have been addressed and accounted for in this Request for Authorization to Establish a New Degree Program. The Belk College Graduate Council (BCGC) considered Appendix C at the request of the DBA Planning Committee. The BCGC unanimously voted in favor of the proposal pending two key sets of revisions, which have been made. First, BCGC asked that the titles and course descriptions for some courses be modified to more closely reflect the content in the syllabi provided. Second, BCGC recommended that the planning committee consider adding an accounting track after the program becomes operational. The BCGC submitted Appendix C to the Belk College graduate faculty for their review. At the faculty meeting, the Belk College graduate faculty unanimously voted in favor or the proposal. No significant issues, concerns, or opposition were raised. The Belk College submitted Appendix C to the UNC Charlotte Graduate Council for their review. The Graduate Council requested more details about the program structure and funding, both of which were addressed in the on-campus approval form and budget. Following the Graduate Council meeting, the DBA proposal was approved unanimously. Page 2 of 59 The UNC Policy Manual 400.1.1.5[G] Adopted05/23/12 Amended 04/16/14 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Overview: The proposed Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) is a professional degree taught in an executive format that will provide doctoral-level preparation for senior-level business professionals who wish to enhance their understanding of business theory, integrate cutting edge business theory and practice, and learn to address complex business problems through advanced research methodology. The purpose of this doctoral program is to provide a sound theoretical grounding and understanding of research methodology to address emerging issues in the practice of business. More than a Ph.D., the executive DBA is broad in scope, cutting across business disciplines to address applied problems facing executives in the workplace. The executive DBA emphasizes the testing, application, and extension of existing theory more than the development of theory. The proposed executive DBA program will target a select group of senior executives who hold an MBA or a master’s degree in a related field and have extensive business experience but who do not want to leave their careers to pursue a full-time Ph.D. Individuals who are attracted to the executive DBA often seek to deepen their overall business knowledge and understanding of high-level research skills in order to better address the complex challenges facing them in today’s dynamic business environment. Others pursue the executive DBA as a means of transitioning into a career in higher education or to enhance their expertise for a career in consulting. Need for the program: Few options for business executive education beyond the master’s degree level currently exist. This is particularly true for executives who choose to pursue advanced education while still fully employed. However, senior executives who participate in executive education frequently request information about furthering their education beyond the MBA or specialized business master’s degree. The explosion of data, complex technology, and the increasing complexities of operating in a rapidly changing global environment require abilities that exceed the MBA or executive MBA level. There has been an evolution of executive education needs from the bachelor’s degree to the MBA/Executive MBA (EMBA). While the primary focus for the proposed executive DBA program will be senior executives pursuing career goals in industry or consulting, there are also opportunities to attract senior executives who plan at some point in their careers to transition into higher education. The shortage of doctoral faculty in business was identified by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International Management Education Task Force (METF) in the document, Management Education at Risk and was further analyzed by the Doctoral Faculty Commission (DFC) and reported in Sustaining Scholarship in Business School. Expanding doctoral programs for executives was presented as a key strategy to address the faculty needs of business schools with non-research missions and to augment the teaching capacity in research focused business schools. Executive doctoral programs are gaining traction in the U.S. as evidenced by the increasing number of universities offering these programs and the discussion of these programs by the news media, businesses, and business accrediting organizations like AACSB International. The demand for doctorates in industry has long been the norm in Europe. In an effort to gain information about demand for the proposed executive DBA, the program concept and an outline of the program was presented to the Belk College Board of Advisors. The reaction to the proposed executive DBA was favorable and subsequent meetings with individual members confirmed that Board members may have a personal interest in the executive DBA program. They were also interested in making this educational opportunity available to top executives in their companies. Page 3 of 59 The UNC Policy Manual 400.1.1.5[G] Adopted05/23/12 Amended 04/16/14 To establish demand for the executive DBA, the Belk College of Business initiated a three-phase demand analysis consisting of a review of secondary sources of information and existing program websites, in- depth interviews with 25 potential students and five human resource executives in major Charlotte-region companies and a survey of alumni from the Belk College MBA and specialized master’s programs. Hanover Research conducted the secondary research and alumni studies. A local consultant conducted the in-depth interviews. Findings from the three research efforts included: A growing number of American EDBA programs attract highly qualified students from around the country and world. Current programs have successfully grown and maintained student enrollment. In in-depth interviews respondents suggested that they knew very little about executive doctorate programs. However, 60 percent of the prospective students (15 individuals) interviewed expressed some interest in the program. Most indicated they would need more information about the specific program that would be offered by the Belk College before making a decision. Of the 99 alumni who responded to the Belk College alumni survey, approximately one third (31 respondents) indicated they would be interested in enrolling in the proposed executive DBA program.

Further- more, if the sole purpose of a doctorate is to develop individuals focused on producing scholarly research articles, that assessment may well be correct. We argue, however, that such a narrowly focused view of the purpose of doctoral programs is self-defeating; by exclusively focusing on scholarly research and writings, we virtually guarantee that our research will never make it into practice. The paper begins by identifying a variety of types of doctoral programs that exist glob- ally and placing these in a conceptual framework. We then present a detailed case study of the information systems (IS) doctoral programs offered in Osnabrueck, Germany—where as many as 90% of candidates choose careers in industry in preference to academia. Finally, we propose— supported using both conceptual arguments drawn from the study of complex informing and ob- served examples—that the greatest benefit of business professional doctorates may be the crea- tion of enduring informing channels between practice and industry.

By institutions I mean those repeated mechanisms that allocate authority among the three and that affect, modulate, and control the decisions made at the top of the firm. Tomberlin Carleton University Abstract In their 2005 Harvard Business Review article, Bennis and O’Toole described business schools as being “on the wrong track” as a result of their focus on so-called scientific research. Some commentators argue that business schools have slowly lost their relevance since the end of the 1950s when they under- took a major overhaul in response to the harsh criticism of the Ford and the Carnegie Foundations on the state of theory and research in business admin- istration. Inspired by Khurana’s (2007) book on the development of American business schools, this article describes the debate on the relevance of scientific business research that can be found in the popular business press and the aca- demic literature, and suggests a number of structural and cultural changes to increase the relevance of business research and its impact on practice.     c e p s Journal | Vol.10 | No2 | Year 2020 123 doi: 10.26529/cepsj.527 A Q-Methodological Analysis of School Principals’ Decision-Making Strategies during the Change Process at Schools Mehmet Semih Summak1 and Mahmut Kalman*2 • The purpose of the research was to explore the decision-making strat- egies that school principals employ while dealing with the challenges faced during the change process at schools. The study was conducted in two cities located in Central and Southeast Turkey, with a sample com- prising 29 primary, middle and secondary school principals, selected via a purposive sampling technique. Q methodology, a qualitative-dominant mixed methods research design, was used in the study. The researchers developed and used a concourse of 24 specific items that target school principals’ decision-making strategies about change-related challenges in schools by taking a perception-driven decision-making model as the theoretical framework. The statistical software PQMethod was used for data analysis. The findings revealed that school principals shared similar views via the item configurations provided regarding decision-making during times of change, and had a similar profile in terms of decision- making and related strategies. The behavioural decision style was found to be the preferred style. The principals had a profile featuring a high focus on people and low cognitive complexity. The dominant beliefs driving their decision-making strategies seemed to incorporate compre- hensive evaluation of the current situation, ethical concerns and organi- sational values, assessment of technical details, and thorough data col- lection. Some implications are drawn for researchers and practitioners. Managing Functional Biases in Organizational Forecasts: A Case Study of Consensus Forecasting in Supply Chain Planning Abstract To date, little research has been done on managing the organizational and political dimensions of generating and improving forecasts in corporate settings. We examine the implementation of a supply chain planning process at a consumer electronics company, concentrating on the forecasting approach around which the process revolves. Our analysis focuses on the forecasting process and how it mediates and accommodates the functional biases that can impair the forecast accuracy. We categorize the sources of functional bias into intentional, driven by misalignment of incentives and the disposition of power within the organization, and unintentional, resulting from informational and procedural blind spots.

    Corporate Governance MGMT 625 Q4 2019 Dr. Mary-Hunter McDonnell [email protected] Course description: This seminar examines the relationships between corporate managers, the boards of directors charged with overseeing them, and investors. We'll review the responsibilities of the board, including financial statement approval, CEO performance assessment, executive compensation, and succession planning. While boards are legally bound to represent the interests of equity investors, in the course of carrying out this role they are often called on to respond to the needs of numerous other stakeholders, including customers, employees, government and society at large. With global brands at risk and mistakes instantly transmitted via Internet and social media, the reputational stakes are very high. The course is a combination of lecture, guest lecture, discussion, case analysis, and in- class research workshops. We will review some of the theory underlying modern governance practice, drawing from theories and evidence provided by research across diverse fields, including finance, sociology, and organization and management theory. We'll study specific situations where boards and management teams faced governance challenges, and assess the strategies used to deal with them. Finally, we'll examine the ways in which governance arrangements and external stakeholder involvement in governance affects corporate social behavior and global citizenship. Course Requirements: Your thoughtful participation, via the following: Attendance and in-class participation (30%) Two short (2-4 pg.) research assignments (30%).
