Many of these artists’ stories remain untold as so few women achieved notoriety in the field and female artists are a relatively new area of robust academic interest. Caroline began her formal training at The Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at a pivotal moment in the American art scene. Women were entering art academies at record numbers, and Caroline was among a cadre of women who finally had access to formal education. Her family had the wealth to support her artistic interest and to secure Caroline’s position with other elite Philadelphia-area families. In addition to her training at the Academy, Caroline frequently traveled to Europe to paint and she studied at the Academie Carmen.

    Russell-Cotes Paintings – The Dining Room Paintings & Sculptures List – The Dining Room The Fruit Seller Giuseppe Signorini (1857-1932) Watercolour, body colour and gum Arabic paper Giuseppe Signorini was an Italian painter, born in Rome, and mainly focused on orientalist subjects. He studied at the Accademia di San Luca, and then worked under Aurelio Tiratelli. He often travelled to the Paris Salon exhibitions and was influenced by the styles and orientalist themes expressed by painters like Mariano Fortuny, Ernest Meissonier, and Gérôme. He often travelled to the Maghreb for inspiration and developed a substantial collection of Islamic art and textiles. He also painted portraits in costume garb. He maintained studios in both Paris and Rome. BORGM 1995:66 The Billet Doux, 1882 William Oliver (1804-1853) Oil on canvas William Oliver was a painter of charming genre scenes, including titles such as A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever and The Billet Doux, and was one of the more popular Victorian artists of his time. Oliver was particularly fond of the Pyrenean area of France and Spain and completed many small Russell-Cotes Paintings – The Dining Room studies of the towns and villages in this area. Many of these small works were then purchased by the young travellers as souvenirs of their Grand Tour. While he favoured painting plein air works, he did complete a number of large and important works during his career – most of which were either created for specific exhibitions or commissions.     CHILDE HASSAM: Docent Notes The Childe Hassam oil painting in the Mint‟s holdings –“The Stone Cottage, Old Lyme”- has always been a favorite of our museum visitors, at least in my experience. This short survey and biographical note is followed by a brief timeline and some authoritative quotes from art historians. Hassam (born in Boston in 1859, died at the summer home East Hampton NY 1935), is widely known as America‟s foremost Impressionist. He is often described as “the American Monet”, and his works were collected and admired during his life by major collectors such as Freer, Whitney, Frick, and White -–no struggling, starving, misunderstood artist he! “Stone Cottage, Old Lyme” is obviously painted outdoors (en plein air to use the French term), with a very pleasing impressionist palette – pastel and deep blues, greens, and yellows. Note that he used no blacks or greys. The sun is to the left and behind the cottage, casting a chimney shadow on the roof and shadow on the ground. While there is a wisp of smoke from the chimney, the people seem warmed by the sun. The adult walker is effectively silhouetted against the tree trunks. Hassam used the quick, short brushstrokes of the impressionist –though he decried this term, and never acknowledged being influenced by the French Impressionists--to give the characteristic vibrant, shimmering light effect. Unlike the French, his works always had form and did not disintegrate into simply “vibrations of light”. The strokes seem loose but controlled. Note the different qualities of brushwork: quick vigorous horizontals for the roof, choppy impasto for the foliage, wide diagonals for the sky.

It was the desire of those responsible for the collection to exhibit chiefly works produced within the last fifteen years and by men of recog- nized ability of every school. The major portion of the works here assembled was selected from the Fine Arts Section; but a few judiciously chosen additions, including the Belgian paintings, were made from the retrospective exhibition in the French Pavilion. It is fair to assume that all of the works presented are characteristic examples by the artists represented, and that they afford the American public an opportunity to study the typical, present-day art of France, the sort of art that one would expect to find assembled in the annual exhibitions of the Salon.

THE government of New Jersey -was first established by the proprietors, Lord John Berkley and Sir George Carteret, the parchment constitution bearing the date of February 10, 1664. This government continued until the division into East and West Jersey, 1676. Robert Barclay was appointed Governor of East Jersey by the proprietors for life, in 1682, and immediately by deputy convened an assembly elected by the people, which sat a^ain in 1686, in 1688, and afterwards at irregular intervals. In West Jersey some of the Governors were appointed by the proprietors, and others by the Legislature, the latter body ap- pointing also the other governmental officers.
