Wilson Teaching Fellows: Oskar Arnorsson, Benedict Clouette, Eva Schreiner Thurs 11am-1pm Fall 2016 This two-semester introductory course is organized around selected questions and problems that have, over the course of the past two centuries, helped to define architecture’s modernity. The course treats the history of architectural modernity as a contested, geographically and culturally uncertain category, for which periodization is both necessary and contingent. The fall semester begins with the apotheosis of the European Enlightenment and the early phases of the industrial revolution in the late eighteenth century. From there, it proceeds in a rough chronology through the “long” nineteenth century. Developments in Europe and North America are situated in relation to worldwide processes including trade, imperialism, nationalism, and industrialization. Sequentially, the course considers specific questions and problems that form around differences that are also connections, antitheses that are also interdependencies, and conflicts that are also alliances. The resulting tensions animated architectural discourse and practice throughout the period, and continue to shape our present. Each week, objects, ideas, and events will move in and out of the European and North American frame, with a strong emphasis on relational thinking and contextualization. This includes a historical, relational understanding of architecture itself. Although the Western tradition had recognized diverse building practices as “architecture” for some time, an understanding of architecture as an academic discipline and as a profession, which still prevails today, was only institutionalized in the European nineteenth century. -

CHILDE HASSAM: Docent Notes The Childe Hassam oil painting in the Mint‟s holdings –“The Stone Cottage, Old Lyme”- has always been a favorite of our museum visitors, at least in my experience. This short survey and biographical note is followed by a brief timeline and some authoritative quotes from art historians. Hassam (born in Boston in 1859, died at the summer home East Hampton NY 1935), is widely known as America‟s foremost Impressionist. He is often described as “the American Monet”, and his works were collected and admired during his life by major collectors such as Freer, Whitney, Frick, and White -–no struggling, starving, misunderstood artist he! “Stone Cottage, Old Lyme” is obviously painted outdoors (en plein air to use the French term), with a very pleasing impressionist palette – pastel and deep blues, greens, and yellows. Note that he used no blacks or greys. The sun is to the left and behind the cottage, casting a chimney shadow on the roof and shadow on the ground. While there is a wisp of smoke from the chimney, the people seem warmed by the sun. The adult walker is effectively silhouetted against the tree trunks. Hassam used the quick, short brushstrokes of the impressionist –though he decried this term, and never acknowledged being influenced by the French Impressionists--to give the characteristic vibrant, shimmering light effect. Unlike the French, his works always had form and did not disintegrate into simply “vibrations of light”. The strokes seem loose but controlled. Note the different qualities of brushwork: quick vigorous horizontals for the roof, choppy impasto for the foliage, wide diagonals for the sky. -

To many who pick up this volume, the concept of an estate area, a “Gold Coast,” in this section of the South Shore of Long Island will be a new concept. In truth it is an old reality; preceding the development of Long Island’s North Shore Gold Coast by some forty years. Spending the Spring and Autumn months in this area of western Suffolk County on the land that slopes down to the Great South Bay with the Atlantic Ocean visible on the horizon beyond Fire Island was such a social phenomenon that the Brooklyn Daily Eagle and local newspapers announced the rental intentions and seasonal arrivals of families. -

The statue of Liberty: an American symbol in its classical context Victoria Tietze Larson The Statue of Liberty (fig.1) is one of the most instantaneously recognizable tourist images in the world, along with the likes of the Taj Mahal, Colosseum,Parthenon, and Eiffel Tower, and has been satirized, idealized, reproduced, and generally exploited so many times, that now, more than anything, it is the embodiment of 'kitsch'. Indeed, the vast rnajority of the more than one million visitors annually who clamber onto the Miss New Jersey and Miss New York to be ferried, consuming soda and pretzels, from Manhattan and New Jersey, to visit the Statue, have little inkling of the classical tradition to which this monument belongs and which was so important a part of its original meaning when it was unveiled by its sculptor, the Frenchman Frederic- Auguste Bartholdi, in 1886. Allegorical representations of abstract concepts in female form (everything from Immortality to Electricity!) were all the rage in European and American nineteenth-century sculpture, so in a sense we have to look no further than contemporary art to understand the immediate influences which shaped the Statue of Liberty. Yet the nineteenth-century fashion for such allegories was the final flowering of a plant that had its roots in antiquity. The conventional training of the nineteenth-century sculptor included much study of classical casts, and in one photograph of a young Bartholdi, staged to represent his evolution as sculptor, he poses next to a replica of Polyclitus' famous Doryphorus or Spear Bearer (fig. 2). In his publicization of the Statue of Liberty Bartholdi emphasized its classical precedents-especially for its colossal size. -

Landmarks Preservation commission September 20, 1977, Number 2 LP-0968 FIRST PRECINCT POLICE STATION, South Street and Old Slip, Borough of Manhattan. Built 1909-11, Architects Hunt & Hunt. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 34, Lot 37. On July 12, 1977, the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Land mark of the First Precinct Police Station, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.4}. The hearing had been duly advertised in accordance with the pro visions of law. No witnesses spoke in favor of designation. There were no speakers in opposition to designation. DESCRIPTION AND ANALYSIS The First Precinct Police Station, designed in the neo-Italian Renaissance style by the notable architectural firm of Hunt & Hunt, was erected in 1909-11. This impres sive ,public building still commands its waterfront site, although it is now surrounded by modern office buildings. The station house stands on Old Slip, in an area which has been important to the city since the late 17th century. Old Slip, at the foot of William Street, was the first slip in the city. These slips were openings between two wharves, where boats were unloaded during high tide. originally a shady, natural meeting place, Old Slip became the site of one of the first official market places in New Amsterdam. The Old Slip Market at Pearl Street reached its peak of popularity in the 1720s. This market lingered on until 1778 and, beginning in the late 18th century, the Slip began to be filled in. -

In his diary (a partial typed copy of which is at the Vice President Kent Memorial Library) he notes on August 9, 1788 “This Arthur Sikes, Jr. day Raised the Frame of a store adjoining the north end of Treasurer my Hous.” Presumably, the store was run from a room in Gary Mandirola his home before this date. Secretary Nancy Noble Thaddeus traveled to New York to purchase goods for his Historian & Curator store. On May 14, 1786 he notes in his diary “...also saw Lester Smith his Highness George Washington Esquier President of the Committee Chairmen United States of America - whom God long preserve.” At some point he and Asahel Hatheway were partners, and Samuel S.
