To enhance mutual understanding among groups and promote inclusive communities, the ADL offers this resource as a tool to increase awareness of and respect for religious obligations and ethnic and cultural festivities that may affect students, colleagues and neighbors in your community. Religious Observations The calendar includes significant religious observances of the major faiths represented in the United States. It can be used when planning school exam schedules and activities, workplace festivities and community events. Note that Bahá’í, Jewish and Islamic holidays begin at sundown the previous day and end at sundown on the date listed. National and International Holidays The calendar notes U.S. holidays that are either legal holidays or observed in various states and communities throughout the country. Important national and international observances that may be commemorated in the U.S. are also included. Calendar System The dates of secular holidays are based on the Gregorian calendar, which is commonly used for civil dating purposes.     1 THE HISTORY OF MAY DAY AND WORKERS’ RIGHTS Around the world the 1st May is celebrated as an annual festival of workers’ rights and solidarity. Originally the day was a pagan celebration of the return of summer. Persecution of May Day began in the 17th century when European rulers backed by the churches attempted to ban the celebrations as being immoral. However many of the traditions continued as the European peasantry had stronger ties to each other and to nature than they had to their rulers and the churches. In the nineteenth century as the industrial revolution spread around the world, men, women and children endured very long working days, often twelve hours or more. The idea of having a workers’ holiday celebration was born in Australia. In 1856 Australian workers organised a day of complete stoppage of work together with speeches and entertainment as a demonstration in favour of an eight hour working day. Thirty years on in the United States on 3rd May 1886, Chicago police opened fire on unarmed strikers, killing 6 and wounding many more. The following day Chicago workers gathered in Haymarket Square to demonstrate against continuing police brutality. As the police attempted to clear the square, a bomb exploded, killing 7 policemen. In a show trial 8 anarchist leaders were convicted of murder even although only one of them was present at the time of the blast and he was addressing the crowd. Four of the leaders were executed, one took his own life in prison; 3 others were later pardoned. The executed Chicago trade unionists became known as the Haymarket Martyrs.

    - A GRAIN OF MUSTARDSEED - Dear Friends in Christ: May 2021 Notwithstanding the continued strictures of the COVID-19 pandemic (vaccinations numbers are up, but so are reported infections in our County and region), May brings a season of religious feasting and celebration: We call to remembrance many of the saving acts of our Lord and Savior; we commemorate the lives and sacrifices of saints and saintly brethren, we pray, as is particularly timely this year, for God’s renewal of His creation. St. Philip and St. James’ Feast is kept with Holy Communion on Saturday, the 1st. Rogation Sunday is on the 9th and we observe the day by singing the Litany in Procession around the precincts of our property (current protocols allow to ‘belt it out’ when outside and wearing masks…so let’s do our best!). In so doing we pray God’s blessing upon his creation in this place wherein He has called us to proclaim Christ’s renewing grace. The three Rogation Days (from the Latin “rogare:” “to ask/pray”) follow, bringing us to the close of Eastertide on Ascension Day on Thursday the 13th (Communion services at 10:00 am and 7:00 pm). Ten days of Ascensiontide carry us to Whitsunday (Pentecost) on the 23rd and the octave of that feast gives us Whit Monday, Whit Tuesday and then three Ember Days on the 26th, 28th and 29th. The Feast of the Holy and Undivided Trinity is kept on Sunday the 30th. We round out the month by praying for the repose of the souls of those who have given their lives in the service of our Nation with a requiem on Memorial Day, May 31st at 8:00 am (not our usual 10:00 time as Fr.

Researchers have struggled to classify “pilgrims” and “tourists” because these groups overlap to a large extent in terms of their identities while participating in religious activities/sightseeing. To achieve sustainable tourism development for the region with rich religious and cultural characteristics, the present article outlines a process for analyzing the motivation of participants attending religious festival of Mazu in Taiwan and then classifies religious festival participants according to their motivations. Using cluster sampling, a total of 280 responses were obtained and analyzed. The results revealed four different motivation categories: Fun traveler, devout believer, cultural enthusiast, and religious pragmatist. The study concludes that while festivalgoers are influenced by secularization to some extent, the original doctrine of the religion epitomized in the festivals fundamentally retains the essence and spirit of its religious rituals. The findings may have a significant value for the development of religious tourism marketing as it offers a foundation for future research seeking to develop regional cultural and religious sightseeing attractions sustainably.     Thinking aloud ix This Monday is Whit Monday. Many people will hardly remember it since the Spring Bank Holiday replaced it. Whit Monday was the first Bank Holiday granted in 1871, Christmas Day and Easter Monday were added. This Sunday is Whitsunday, the New Testament reminds us of the help and support given to us by God in His Holy Spirit. It was a very popular day for Baptism when white is traditionally worn, hence Whit or White Sunday. It’s a forward looking festival, God’s support for all we are doing and going to do. Lockdown is being relaxed a little on this Whit Monday, but life remains with a need for caution. We must remember that there are many who are still advised to self-isolate, there are many others who remain cautious for various reasons and will not be rushing out to the shops to buy the latest treat from Birds’. As we look toward to a more normal future it is important we continue to support the elderly and the vulnerable, we maintain our new friendships with neighbours and treasure close relationships with family and friends again. We still need to support in our prayers the NHS and carers and everyone who restlessly works to keep life normal for us. There are still thousands who are bereaved. The message of Whitsun is living with the support of the hand of the Creator God as we remember we are hopefully moving slowly beyond Coronavirus with enhanced compassion, support, and encouragement for all we meet. Last weekend saw another important celebration, that of our Muslim friends, the keeping of Eid.

In the 20th century, visiting cemeteries in Poland on 1st November acquired some attributes of recreation and cultural tourism, visible in the atmosphere of a country fair and the ludic character of the cemetery surroundings, as well as the visitors’ commemorative, contemplative and cognitive motivations. Due to cultural changes, All Saints’ Day is increasingly perceived as a tourist event or even a cultural tourism product. The article presents a comparative description of the All Saints’ Day celebrations in Poland and the Day of the Dead in Latin America, and an analysis of visitors at selected Łódź cemeteries along with a description of the cemetery surroundings on 1st November 2019. The author has used unpublished research results from 2004, as well as discussing the secular and recreational aspects of All Saints’ Day. They call the festival ”Up-Helly-Aa”. Every winter the people of Lerwick, a town in the Shetlands, make a model of a ship. It's a Viking ”longship”, with the head of a dragon at the front. Then, on Up-Helly-Aa night in January, the Shetlanders dress in Viking clothes. They carry the ship through the town to the sea. There they burn it. They do this because the Vikings put their dead men in ships and burned them. But there aren't any men in the modern ships. Now the festival is a party for the people of the Shetland Islands. THE THIRD MONDAY OF JANUARY MARTIN LUTHER KING’S BIRTHDAY (USA) Martin Luther King was an important black leader who wanted equality for black people and fought for their civil rights.
