Watercolor class supply list

Professional quality colors are high in pigments and are highly recommended. They are pricy but worth buying it.

You can also consider student quality specially when you are not sure if this is what you continue to go long way or you do not want to spend so much in the beginning

They both are good but my personal choice is Winsor & Newton Professional watercolors

Gansai Tambi Set of Assorted Colors. This is also another good option to considert. These are high pigment colors. You can get sets in 12, 18, 36, 60, 72 colors. Student Quality Watercolor Paints: • ‘Reeves’, ‘Cotman’ or ‘Simply Watercolor’ 12 or 18 colors watercolor set is in-expensive student quality and reasonably good to give a start.

Watercolor is mostly done with Transparent watercolors. But you may need some opaque color touches to give more professional look. Following are basic sable watercolor brushes you may need. You need to select the brushes, which are very soft and can hold lots of water. Rounded bushes should have a good pointed end. Buy good quality brushes. The better quality you use the good result you get. You can bring your own choice of assorted brushes or follow from the list below. • Flat Brushes: - 1 inch • Round Brushes: #2, #4, #6 #8 and, #10 round brush BRUSHES • Round “liner” brush (long bristle #0 or #2 number brush for fine lines)

Watercolor pad (Recommended: Strathmore watercolor paper pad, 400 series. Important Note: Look for BROWN COVER PAGE and not yellow cover page watercolor pad. WATERCOLOR (Picture at right)). Size can be PAPER around 9” x 12” or more. You can also have watercolor paper sheets. The heavier the paper is the better is for watercolor.

Watercolor regular palette (big enough with 12 – 30 wells to store colors. In addition, ideal palette should have lid, and large PALETTE mixing area. Martin Mijello Airtight

CHARCOAL A set of charcoal pencils of Hard, Medium and Soft. ‘General’ is a good PENCILS brand. WILLOW It gives soft, subtle grays that are easy to blend AND/OR VINE and easy to erase. Natural variations in the CHARCOAL willow/vine can create variations in texture STICKS and tone.

ERASERS Regular and Kneaded Eraser are REQUIRED. Kneaded eraser is soft malleable eraser that’s very easy on the paper, leaves no crumbs and lifts graphite and charcoal well. DRAWING One Sketching pad and one Drawing paper pad needed. Size should not be PAPER less that 9” x 12”. Canson and Strathmore are good brands. Charcoal paper pad may be needed later for advance drawings.

Pastel color class supply list

• Hard : Nupastel set of 24 or more. It is good inexpensive hard pastels PASTEL STICKS • Soft Pastels: Look for any soft pastel brand i.e. , Rembrant, Unison, Schmincke. A set of 40 half sticks is good for a beginner to start. You can also get a set of 80 or buy individual sticks.

Tinted pastel paper. No less then PAPER 9” x 12” in size. You can consider Strathmore. (see picture on right)

Oil painting class supply list

There are Professional quality paints for the serious or intermediate/advanced artists and Student quality paints for beginners. Student quality paints are much cheaper as compare to professional quality and is economical to start.

They are cheap quality and won’t give you good results. There is no hard and fast rule…you can buy any number of brushes of your choice or buy from the list below:

• Flat and/or Filbert Brushes: 4, 10, 14, 18 (you can buy a combination of filbert and flat. Filbert works better on painting rounded objects like flower petals • Round Brushes: 0, 2 and 6 round brushes • Round “liner” brush (long bristle #2 or #3 number brush for fine lines) Check below some reasonable quality and economical brushes: Simply Simmons, Artist’s Loft Roma, Soft grip, Zen. You can also look for expensive brushes but there is actually no need.

MUST HAVE Minimum 1 medium size standard palette knife. There are other sizes available too. Please note that the metal top part should be flexible and bend easily. The PALETTE KNIFE softer it bends the better it works. It is used to mix the colors as well as adding texture on the painting.

Primed and stretched canvas. You can bring small or medium size canvas e.g. 10”x10”, ”9” x 12” 12”x12”, 11”x14”, 12”x16” 16”x20” or larger in CANVAS size. (It is advisable to bring small or medium size canvas so that you can finish your painting in reasonable time. You can also use canvas boards or Canvas paper pads

Galkyd medium thins oil colors and increases transparency and gloss. Galkyd is our fastest-drying painting medium. Thin layers will be touch-dry in approximately 24 hours.

NEO MEGILP (Required) This soft gel medium maintains the body of oil colors, increases transparency and flow, and imparts a smooth, silky feel. Neo Megilp dries at a moderate rate and remains workable for hours. Neo Megilp gives MEDIUM/ colors a satin gloss. SOLVENT ------

GAMSOL (Required) Gamsol allows artists to work to thin oil colors and painting mediums, and for general studio clean-up. Gamsol is reusable & non-toxic when used as recommended. Less Toxic Solvent:

Xtra Mild Citrus Thinner from Eco House. This thinner does not make ridiculous claims of non-toxicity. In essence, since any solvent will dissolve fat, all solvents are toxic to humans. This thinner has low-toxicity and is made from a combination of cosmetic grade mineral oil, food quality orange oil and herbal essential oils. GALKYD GEL (Optional) Galkyd Gel is a stiffer gel compared to Neo Megilp that holds MEDIUM/ thicker, sharper brushmarks & dries SOLVENT more quickly. Galkyd Gel increases transparency of oil colors and creates impasto. It is good for adding texture.

• A wide open medium sized glass jar (required) with tight lid – To keep Gamsol to clean the MEDIUM/ brushes and thin the paint. Left SOLVENT over Gamsol can be reused.

• A small glass/plastic container (required) - to keep the mediums.

• White (optional). Gesso is needed to prime the canvas. OTHER • Cotton rags (such as old cotton T shirts) or Paper towel (Reqiored) SUPPLIES • Pencil • Eraser

Acrylic Painting Class Supply List

ACRYLIC Student quality acrylic paints: PAINTS A student quality set is good for a beginner to start with, specially, if you are not sure you are going to enjoy the acrylic painting but still interested in learning. These are rich in pigments and very reasonably priced and much better in quality, comparing other student quality acrylic paints.

Loft acrylic paints can be considered as a second option.
