Historically, the telephone service at Gitmo never had been anything like stateside service. Frustration and anger often have resulted fran wrong* numbers, or no numbers at all. The base's four telephone exchanges-three on Mainside and one at Leeward Point-are somewhat outmoded and problems in obtaining repair parts often resulted in extended telephone problems. The Leeward Point area has had its share of problems, especially after the move of NAS fran Windward to leeward Point. With the large increase of personnel and no increase in communication facilities, telephone service has been practically nonexistent. Telephone service between Leeward Point and Mainside is provided by a cross-bay underwater telephone cable and a microwave system. The cross-bay line is used mostly for operational type commication such as weather information and Tase Security type service, leaving only a few lines for voice commuication.

This new system was made operational May 10 and the leeward Point occupants can now look forward to dialing the overseas operator direct. Also, additional lines to Exchange 9 and Exchange 8 will improve overall telephone service between Mainside and Leeward Point. Another important featurewhich is a direct result of the microwave, is the installation of "hot line." The "hot line" or direct communication links will provide direct uninterrupted cammication between such areas as Naval Hospital and leeward Point Dispensary, Flag Plot and Naval Air Station operations and several other vital locations.

Additional work is scheduled to imorove further local telephone service at Leeward Point. The completion of a 150 pair telephone cable is scheduled for early June. Naval Station wins finals SPORTS by Keith Sandler

Special Services has released some final statistics from the 1973 Inter- camand baseball season in which Naval Station came out on toD in that thrilling game held Monday night, a 4-3 win over the challengers front across the bay, VC-10. In the American league, in regular seasonal action, Marine Barracks finished out on top with a 12-1 record, with the champs, Naval Station, be- hind in second place with a 9-4 record. In third place was Naval Air Station with a 6-7 record followed by Security Group, 4-9; and Hospital/ Dental on the bottom in the American League with a 2-11 record. In the National league, NSD (Never Say Die), took first place in the regular season play with a 10-3 record, with VC-10 in seaod with an 8-5. The 2/8 Marines cane in third with a 7-6, just missing the play-offs by one gane. Fourth place went to High School who finished with a 5-8 slate with CD)NAVBASE holding the bottom position with a 2-11 record.

The final over-all standings after the play-offs found Naval Station taking all of the top honors after a hectic game with VC-10. PW-10 took second place, while third and fourth place went to NSD and Marine Bar- Top Ten racks. The 2/8 Marines took the fifth spot with the best seasonal record of the teams not involved fith with the play-offs.
