ABSTRACT REMEMBERING JIM CROW: THE LITERARY MEMOIR AS HISTORICAL SOURCE MATERIAL MAY 2004 JENNIFER JENSEN WALLACH, B.A., UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS Ph.D., UNIVERSITY OF MASSACHUSETTS AMHERST Directed by: Professor Robert Paul Wolff This dissertation is a two-fold project. The first half is a methodological examination of how memoirs can be used as instruments of historical understanding. The second half applies this methodology to the study of several memoirs written about life in the American south in the first half of the twentieth century. Memoir is a peculiar genre which straddles the disciplines of literature and history. Currently the field of autobiography studies is dominated by literary critics. However, there is nothing inherent about the genre dictating that this should be the case. This dissertation analyzes memoirs from a historical perspective. I argue that insights drawn from life writing have the potential to greatly enhance our historical understanding. I broach several topics including the problem of defining autobiography, the disciplinary proprietorship of the memoir, the relationship between history and theory, and the linkages between the historical study of memoirs and interdisciplinary conversations about historical memory. I describe the nature of historical reality, arguing that the individual thoughts, emotions, perceptions, and misperceptions of each historical agent are constitutive of the historical reality of a particular moment. Memoirs capture VI the entire universe as it appeared from one acknowledged perspective. Furthermore, skilled, creative writers are especially adept at capturing the complexity of a past moment. Authors of literary memoirs draw on the aesthetic power of literary language and on literary devices such as metaphor and irony to powerfully portray particular historical moments. I apply these ideas to an examination of memoirs about life in the segregated American south. I analyze memoirs written by African Americans, by whites, by men, by women, and by individuals with various political points of views. I find these accounts bear certain similarities to one another but are often strikingly at odds. Different ideas about the psychological impact of segregation, dissimilar characterizations of the black community, and contrary descriptions of the same moment and the same geographical space reveal that there is no singular Jim Crow experience. Andrews "Autobiography holds a position of priority, indeed many would say preeminence, among the narrative traditions of black America." 1 During the era of slavery, escaped slaves wrote or dictated thousands of first person accounts of the horrors of slavery. Slave narratives not only provided fuel for the cause of abolition, but they also served to assert the humanity of the formerly enslaved. In the century and a half since emancipation, African Americans have continued to construct autobiographies that serve as political tools to fight against racism in its various manifestations. These life writings also present portraits of African American life that defy stereotyped ideas about blackness. Indeed many of the most widely read and critiqued books in the African American literary tradition, ranging from the Narrative of the Life ofFrederick Douglass (1845) to The Autobiography of Malcolm X (1965), come from the genre of autobiography. The sheer number and quality of these autobiographies makes them a worthy subject of study for the student of African American studies. Life writing also holds a preeminent place in black studies and in other areas of interdisciplinary inquiry because the genre is, in many respects, an interdisciplinary one. Autobiography straddles the boundaries of traditional academic disciplines. It simultaneously purports to be both literature and history. As an interdisciplinary genre, the autobiography demands a criticism that cuts across traditional disciplines. The field of autobiography studies is fertile ground for exploring the nature of interdisciplinary inquiry. ' William L. An explanation of the genesis of this dissertation requires me to indulge in an autobiographical aside. I am certainly not the only scholar working in the field of autobiography studies to succumb to the easy temptation to base my analysis of life writing in episodes drawn from my own life. However, I don't believe that this is a false starting place. After all, scholarly work cannot ever be completely extricated from the scholar herself. The kinds of things we write, the subjects that attract us, and the theoretical positions that we take are all related in some way to the people we are, the experiences that we have had, and the things we have been exposed to. This project employs sources freely available online to create a historical geodatabase of the A Line of the Mexican National Railroad circa 1910. The project utilizes satellite imagery, census data, historical maps, train schedules along with postcards and photography from the period, to reconstruct the rail line and its stations shortly before the Mexican Revolution. These sources are combined in a GIS to create a highly accurate map and associated historical database of the system as it existed in the first decade of the 20th Century. The database suggests the potential of future scholarship combining GIS software, satellite imagery, and online source materials.

    Social Studies Research and Practice www.socstrp.org Past Looking: Using Arts as Historical Evidence in Teaching History Yonghee Suh Old Dominion University This is a comparative case study of how three high school history teachers in the U.S.A. use art in their practice. The following research question was investigated: How do secondary history teachers incorporate the arts—paintings, music, poems, novels, and films—in their teaching of history and why? Data were collected from three sources: interviews, observations, and classroom materials. Grounded theory was utilized to analyze the data. Findings suggest these teachers use the arts as historical evidence roughly for three purposes: First, to teach the spirit of an age; second, to teach the history of ordinary people invisible in official historical records; and third, to teach, both with and without art, the process of writing history. Two of the three teachers, however, failed to teach historical thinking skills through art. Keywords: history, history instruction, art, interdisciplinary approach, thinking skills, primary sources. Introduction Encouraging historical thinking in students is not a new idea in history education. Since the turn of the 20th century, many historians and history educators have argued that history consists of not only facts, but also historians’ interpretation of those facts, commonly known as the process of historical thinking, or how to analyze and interpret historical evidence, make historical arguments, and engage in historical debates (Bain, 2005; Holt, 1990; VanSledright; 2002; Wineburg, 2001). Many past reform efforts in history education have shared this commitment to teach students to think historically, in part by being engaged in the process of historical inquiry (Bradley Commission on History in Schools, 1988; National Center for History in the Schools, 1995).

    Rationality and History By Georg G. Iggers (Lecture which he gave at East China Normal University, 2007) I The past two decades have seen a lively theoretical discussion internationally on how history is to be written and at the same time a conscious reorientation in the writing of history itself. The term "postmodernism" has at times been applied to the new theoretical outlook and the new historiography.1 The discussion has raised certain very fundamental questions regarding the nature of historical inquiry similar to those which have been asked regarding other forms of intellectual activity. These questions have revolved around the assumptions which have underlain historical writing - and philosophical thought - since the beginning of the Western tradition of secular history. There were two assumptions which were central to this tradition from Herodotus and Thucydides to the very recent past, namely, that there is a distinction, even if not necessarily an absolute dividing line, between fact and fiction, and similarly that there is a difference between rational thought and free imagination, even if the two may intersect In dealing with the problems of reality and rationality raised in those segments of recent philosophic thought which have identified themselves as post-modern or deconstructionist,2 this article proceeds from the assumption, rejected by this thought, that a historical text must be understood with reference to the context to which it refers and that this context contains an element of objectivity not fully identical with the subjectivity of the historian and an element of rationality which presumes elements of intersubjectivity in the methods of historical inquiry.

We are still dimly, unconsciously, aware that our culture grew out of classical civilisation Allan Massie is a novelist and journalist. He is the author of six novels set in ancient Rome, all published by Sceptre In his short book "The Future of the Classical," Salvatore Settis, director of the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, writes that "the marginalisation of classical studies in our education systems and our culture at large is a profound cultural shift that would be hard to ignore." At the same time, he asks: "What place is there for the ancients in a world... characterised by the blending of peoples and cultures, the condemnation of imperialism, the end of ideologies, and the bold assertion of local traditions, and ethnic and national identities in the face of all forms of cultural hegemony? Why seek out common roots, if everyone is intent on distinguishing their own from those of their neighbour?" The points are well made, the questions pertinent, though the implication is not always as cogent as Settis supposes. After all, one characteristic of the Roman world was a very similar "blending of peoples and cultures," as eastern gods and goddesses were introduced to Rome and worshipped there, and as the emperors came more often from the provinces than from Italy, let alone Rome. Yet if classical studies are in decline, as they unquestionably are, there is still much interest in the ancient world.

The Authentic Memoir’s Destabilization of Identity Abstract The memoir has been called creative nonfiction which positions it somewhere in between fiction and nonfiction. This paper considers the memoir’s capacity to approach authenticity and the challenges this presents for those writing about mental illness. This paper also clarifies the idiosyncrasies of the genre of memoir, particularly how it stands out against other genres such as the novel and autobiography, and how this generates certain expectations in the readers of memoir. Research is used that investigates the complexity of the genre of memoir as well as the concept of authenticity to make an argument for how authors might approach authenticity in their memoir writing. It is shown that memoir is a genre that allows for an emphasis on subjectivity and creativity rather than historical fact. Authenticity is shown to be a polemical concept, which, in the case of memoir, is directed against the author’s previous identity. Marion Milner’s autobiographical writing method is used as an example for writing authentic memoir. This thesis argues that the authentic memoir may be used to create a new identity of its own and therefore relies on an author’s relinquishing of previous identity, and that through this process of identity destabilization the activity of writing memoir approaches an authenticity of its own.
