MESHELL NDEGEOCELLO NNNewNewewew album : «: « Weather » out on the 8th of November Biography by Romain Grossman Meshell has changed. So has her music. It’s more peaceful, freer. Her new album, Weather, cloaks itself in the colours of autumn, full of in-between shades and hues and with a certain mildness to it. The singer has let her feelings carry her along. Meshell has never been scared of sharing her most intimate thoughts in explicit or colourful terms that always come from the heart. As ever, she is true to herself. But Weather ’s folk sensibility and pregnant acoustic melodies make this a supremely accessible album. “For a long time I was at war with everyone else. I dug my heels in, I fought hard. That’s all over now. I have my opinions, but they’re no longer a source of conflict with the rest of the world.” On Weather Meshell’s usually deep vocals slip into a register more like a whisper, sharing secrets about subjects that are straightforward, almost light-hearted. She has pared down her style to something like pop. “I started to write this album on the guitar and you can hear it. The final atmosphere’s gentler.” And then the singer agreed without fuss to put her fate in the hands of a producer. Joe Henry (Ani DiFranco, Bettye Lavette, Allen Toussaint, etc.) helped her reveal a different side to herself. And Meshell went along with this. “I’ve known him since the Bitter album; Craig Street introduced us. I hadn’t called on someone from outside for several albums.

NOSTALGISCHE SCHNITTMUSTER IM JAZZ VON CASSANDRA WILSON, DIANA KRALL UND NORAH JONES Jürgen Arndt I. 1992 kommentierte Kontrabassist Charlie Haden die CD Haunted Heart sei- nes Quartet West: »I have conceived this recording as if it were a film telling a story. A story evoking feelings of nostalgia, remembering beautiful moments and how pre- cious they are; a story that evokes the importance of every human being on this earth, and that the history of the universe from the beginning of time is in each of us« (Haden 1992).

BLANCK MASS "In Ferneaux" (SACRED SBR267 CD/ LP BLANCK MASS "In Ferneaux (magenta)” (SACRED SBR267LPC1 LP February 26 street date. "In Ferneaux" explores pain in motion, building audio-spatial chambers of experience and memory. Using an archive of field recordings from a decade of global travels, isolation gave Blanck Mass an opportunity to make connections in a moment when being together is impossible. The record is divided into two long-form journeys that gather the memories of being with now-distant others through the composition of a nostalgic travelogue. The journeys are haunted with the vestiges of voices, places, and sensations. These scenes alternate with the building up and releasing of great aural tension, intensities that emerge from the trauma of a personal grieving process which has perhaps embraced its rage moment. With "In Ferneaux", Blanck Mass wrangles the immanent materials of the here-and-now to build a sense of transcendence. Here, the uncanny angelic hymn sits comfortably beside the dirge. The misery and blessing are one. CARCASS "Swansong (digi-FDR audio)” (EARACHE) MOSH160CDFD CD CARCASS "Swansong (FDR audio)" (EARACHE) MOSH160FDR LP January 29 street date. • A Conversation with Joe Henry by Frank Goodman
A Conversation with Joe Henry by Frank Goodman (Puremusic.com, 2/2004) We feel very fortunate to present a lengthy, friendly, and technically intimate conversation with one of the most interesting and talented songwriters working today, Joe Henry. We got turned on to him in our interview some time ago with Steve Earle, who sang Joe’s praises as one of his favorites. So we wasted little time in acquiring a cross section of his work. We quickly got the picture that Joe began more in the singer songwriter, alt-country vein and made the almost unprecedented journey toward a more jazz inspired groove music with lyrics that were following a sympathetic trajectory. It was progressively less linear, more atmospheric, and the cast of characters changed accordingly, including musicians as diverse as the Jayhawks and Ornette Coleman. Alas, my description falls short, but what follows is much more complete. What’s fascinating to this writer is the unique evolution of this artist, and how it continues to unfold. I asked Joe about it, and he was kind enough to walk me through the whole discography. That’s not something I would normally consider that interesting. But when an artist continually mutates over time (unlike, say, Neil Young, who seems more of a zig zagger), we think the method to his madness is worthy of explanation. Some peripheral circumstances create notoriety spikes in the artist’s profile: being married to Madonna’s sister Melanie, appearing recently in an episode of Dharma and Greg, and producing the Grammy winning comeback for 60s soul icon Solomon Burke.

  • Madeleine Peyroux
MADELEINE PEYROUX Madeleine Peyroux is in the midst of her journey. Renowned for her interpretive song skills, the vocalist followed her creative muse on 2009’s “Bare Bones” by challenging herself to write a full album of her own compositions. Now with “Standing On the Rooftop” (Emarcy/Decca), she delves deeper into her reinvention, not only writing the bulk of the songs, but pushing past any preconceived notions about her music and daring herself to expand her sonic template. “I wanted to explore some new sounds,” says Peyroux, best known for her stunning, gold-certified 2004 album, “Careless Love.” “That would be the most exciting thing that I could think of as a musician. I’ve been recording my voice and my guitar together long enough to know this was not the limit.” Peyroux, who was named Best International Jazz Artist at the 2007 BBC Jazz Awards, has lost none of her compelling ability to reinvent a lyric and give it soul-shaking meaning through her intricately nuanced vocal shadings. But she’s broadened her musical palette here, embracing an organic, American roots sound. Listeners need look no further than the title track to hear the metamorphosis. “Standing On the Rooftop” opens with a hypnotic pulse that runs through the song like a jagged heartbeat. “I thought, ‘This is an interesting arrangement, something more like Steve Reich,’ but it’s harmonically interesting. The space around the lyrics, the time it takes to get from one phrase to another, it felt like a natural evolution,” Peyroux says. Or take the haunting, spectral tones on an exquisite cover of Robert Johnson’s “Love in Vain,” a song she was initially hesitant to approach.
