At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens the American fencers won the gold and bronze medals in women’s individual saber – an event debuting in the Olympic program. Four years later at the Olympics in Beijing the US fenc- ers swept all three medals in women’s individual saber, bronze in women’s team saber, silver in women’s team foil and silver in men’s team saber. Olym- pic fencing, especially women’s saber fencing, is currently in its heyday in the United States.1 It is an important part of collegiate athletics and the number of fencing clubs in the USA is probably the largest in the world. 1 E.
