Northern Saints Trails the Way of Love Durham to Hartlepool
Northern Saints Trails The Way of Love Durham to Hartlepool Introduction This guide describes the pilgrimage route between Durham Cathedral and St Hilda’s Church in Hartlepool. All the Northern Saints Trails use the same waymark shown on the left. The total distance is 45.5 kilometres or 28 miles. The route is divided into four sections of between 9 and 15 kilometres. The sections are in reverse order from 4 to 1 as they were originally allocated from east to west. Points of interest are described in red. One of the reasons that this route is called The Way of Love is that pilgrimage, particularly in the Middle Ages, was viewed as an act of devotion. One of the most famous pilgrimages to Durham was that of King Canute about a thousand years ago. He is recorded as walking barefoot from near the Trimdons to Durham. The church in Kelloe is dedicated to St Helen who was one of the initiators of pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Two other churches at Hart and Trimdon are dedicated to St Mary Magdalene who was known for her great devotion to Christ. St Hilda of Hartlepool was also known for her great devotion to God. Adding the fact that the cathedral is dedicated not just to St Cuthbert, but also to the Blessed Virgin Mary, we can say that this route has a distinctly feminine flavour! If you had been walking this route in the Middle Ages, and you encountered someone carrying a cross walking to Hartlepool, he would most likely be a fugitive. -

North Eastern Railway Civil Engineering Drawings List Description: The collection includes a minority of architectural plans, along with drawings of structures such as bridges and viaducts, maps of permanent way routes and alterations, signalling plans and diagrams, with a variety of miscellaneous components for structures and infrastructure. The collection comprises approximately 3500 plans, diagrams and maps on paper, wax linen and linen- backed cartridge paper. System of arrangement: The original arrangement of the drawings has been lost and they derive from a wide variety of applications within the architectural and civil engineering genres. The drawings have therefore been listed in the rolls in which they were found, and every effort made to record the variety of numbering systems used at different times by the railway company departments involved in creating and storing the drawings, representative of the different types of drawing. There is no one single and consistent numbering arrangement. Physical Characteristics: The drawings survive in a variety of formats and sizes – there are wax linen tracings, colour washed linenbacked original office drawings, drawings on cartridge paper, blueprints and other copying processes. Administrative/Biographical History: The North Eastern Railway Company was formed in 1854 as an amalgamation of the York & North Midland Railway, the Leeds Northern Railway and the York, Newcastle & Berwick Railway. It continued to absorb other companies in the north eastern region of England over subsequent decades, including the Stockton & Darlington Railway, South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway and the West Hartlepool Railway. In 1923 the various railway companies of the United Kingdom were grouped into four large amalgamations. -

It can be freely modified and reproduced for use in the classroom only. Trimdon : What was it like living in a late 19th Century mining town? 2 Introduction Trimdon is an area of County Durham in the North of England which covers the towns of Trimdon, Trimdon Grange and Trimdon Colliery. At the beginning of the 19th century it was simply fields and moors. By the middle of the 19th century more people came to live and work in the area. A railway was built and houses sprang up near to the railway line. By the late 19th century Trimdon had grown even bigger; there were now several roads and rows of houses. In this lesson, we are going to look at a number of different sources about Trimdon. We are trying find out what it must have been like to live in Trimdon in the late 19th century. Tasks Look at Source 1 1. This is a map of the Trimdon area in 1857. a) Make a list of all the different things you can see on the map. b) Where did people work? c) Were the houses big or small? d) In 1857, was it a large town? e) Was Trimdon a middle class or working class area? The Way of Love Route
Introduction This describes the pilgrimage route between St Hilda’s Church in Hartlepool and Durham Cathedral. There are three significant churches on the route, St Mary Magdalene in Hart, St Mary Magdalene in Trimdon and St Helen’s in Kelloe and with the cathedral dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary as well as St Cuthbert, the route has a distinctly feminine flavour! Points of interest are described in red. The total distance is 45.5 kilometres or 28 miles. I have organised the route into four sections of between 9 and 15 kilometres. Section 1 Hartlepool to Hart - 9km St Hilda’s Hartlepool The institutional foundations of the monastic community that lived and worshipped on Hartlepool’s headland date back to the early days of Northumbrian Christianity. St Aidan, co- founder of the famous monastery at Lindisfarne, appointed Hieu as abbess in 640 A.D. of a double monastery of both monks and nuns. The first woman to be given such authority, Hieu led the community until c. 649 A.D. when Hilda, who would later found the famous house at Whitby, was appointed as abbess. Hieu and Hilda led monastic communities that lived in wooden buildings enclosed by a simple wooden enclosure that bears little resemblance to the current church marooned on its peninsula by the later growth of Hartlepool. The original monastery was destroyed during a violent Viking raid in c. 800 A.D. after which the abbey, and the village which had grown up around it, disappears from the echoes of recorded history. We hear nothing of this village, the origins of Hartlepool, until 12th century when the abbey reappeared on the pages of history. -

This pilgrimage route, along with the Ways of Life, Light and Learning, all lead to the shrine of St Cuthbert in Durham. One of the reasons that this route is called The Way of Love is that pilgrimage, particularly in the Middle Ages, was viewed as an act of devotion. One of the most famous pilgrimages to Durham was that of King Canute about a thousand years ago. He is recorded as walking barefoot along the latter part of this route. The church in Kelloe is dedicated to St Helen who was one of the initiators of pilgrimages to the Holy Land. Two other churches at Hart and Trimdon are dedicated to St Mary Magdalene who was known for her great devotion to Christ. St Hilda of Hartlepool was also known for her great devotion to God. Adding the fact that the cathedral is dedicated not just to St Cuthbert, but also to the Blessed Virgin Mary, we can say that this route has a distinctly feminine flavour! Hartlepool was the official port for the County Palatine of Durham, so it is likely that any devotees of St Cuthbert from the continent would have taken this route. If they had met anyone carrying a cross walking in the opposite direc- tion, he would most likely be a fugitive. -

Some details of the event or person commemorated follow each item, or group of items, and the reader seeking more background information is often directed to an appropriate source, or sources. Exact descriptions of glass types and line breaks of inscriptions are, in some instances, missing. This is sometimes because the glass was seen in the early days of our interest, perhaps 20 years ago and long before this work was imagined. In other cases, data has been extracted from articles, private collection descriptions or auction catalogues that lack these precise details. I hope that glass collectors, together with enthusiasts of northeastern and mining history, will find this catalogue of interest and value. -

TRIMDON GRANGE walk – approximately 18 minutes duration Audio 1 Before we begin our stroll, let’s look at where we’re going to go. How does our view compare with what previous generations would have seen? If you base yourself by the bus stop outside St Alban’s Church, and face the woodlands, you’re looking at where our walk will begin. Look at the trees opposite. Move your eyes to the tops of the trees. Then imagine 12 trees on top of those, one on top of the other. You’re looking way up into the sky now. But just forty years ago, you’d have been looking at a huge pit heap. It reached 150 feet into the air. As you can imagine, its great bulk dominated the lives of the people who lived around its edges in the village. Every day, as the sun moved around, its chilly shadow moved across the houses. It reduced the warmth and daylight by up to two hours – a lot, when there’s no electric lighting or central heating. Just down the road to your left is the local infants’ school. It’s been there more than a hundred years – children’s earliest memories would have been coming to school in the huge presence of the mine, then going home into households where the family depended on the mine for work. Their own future was almost certainly as a miner or the wife of a miner. This pattern lasted more than a century – only ending with the closure of mine in 1968. -

The project was led by the English Folk Dance and Song Society (EFDSS), funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund and in partnership with other cultural partners across England. The Full English digital archive (www.vwml.org) continues to provide access to thousands of records detailing traditional folk songs, music, dances, customs and traditions that were collected from across the country. Some of these are known widely, others have lain dormant in notebooks and files within archives for decades. The Full English learning programme worked across the country in 19 different schools including primary, secondary and special educational needs settings.
