Managers Take a Lead in Polish Football Managers take a lead in Polish football Forbes.pl has investigate the field of business side changes in Polish football. "Boguslaw Biszof, President of Ekstraklasa, has started cooperation with media-giant. Owing to that Polish clubs may become more richer. Biszof has a chance to give a new lease of life to club football in Poland" - writes Forbes.pl. MP & Silva agency is a tycoon on market of media agencies which are interested in sport. This global company with 650 million dollars revenue can be proud of cooperation with top leagues of football world like English Premier League, German Bundesliga, Spanish Primera Division, but also Formula 1, NBA matches and tennis tournament Roland Garros. In 18 offices of MP & Silva around the world are taken decisions about broadcasting the most popular sport events in the globe. However, they also think about these smaller like Polish Ekstraklasa. Such a situation was impossible a few years ago. Fortunately there are experienced managers and businessmen who took care of Polish football recently. Today we can say, that they have an idea, how to attract big money to it. Boguslaw Biszof is one of these people and he is in charge of taking up the cooperation with MP & Silva. He has worked for years in brewing companies, mostly in “Kompania Piwowarska” (part of SABMiller) and then in Heineken. He was marketing vice-director of its Russian branch before he became President of Ekstraklasa in 2012. Bogusław Biszof acts as a President of Ekstraklasa since September 2012 - We had eight breweries in Russia, from Kaliningrad to Khabarovsk. Despite the fact I liked this job, I was tired of continual travels. My family was far away, so I started to plan my comeback to Poland – says Biszof. He was near joining Ekstraklasa in 2007, before leaving the country. However, it was Andrzej Rusko who was elected a President of Ekstraklasa. Robert Pietryszyn, former director of one Ekstraklasa’s club joked, he would start in that election If he had known about candidacies of Biszof and Rusko. - Today I can pay tribute to President Biszof. He has created strong team with himself as a leader. Biszof set clear targets and has vision – says Pietryszyn. It was Maciej Wandzel, who figured out Biszof for Ekstraklasa. Chairman of its Supervisory Board recognised marketing manager of Russian Heineken as a better protection of business of Polish football clubs. Wandzel is the biggest stockholder of Black Lion fund which is the owner of Soho Factory and Prochnik. Moreover, he has just become co-owner of Legia Warsaw (with Dariusz Mioduski and Boguslaw Lesnodorski). He seems to be one of the most influential player in Polish football next to Zbigniew Boniek who reforms Polish Football Association (PZPN) and got Wandzel’s support in election of PZPN’s President two years ago. (...) Biszof’s greatest success is starting cooperation with MP & Silva. However, we will notice its positive effects in the beginning of next year. Italian firm sells media rights on international markets, mainly in Asia. MP & Silva is to distribute TV, mobile and internet rights of Ekstraklasa for the nearest six years in Poland and abroad. This is the third case in Europe when media agency got all media rights. - There is guaranteed sum in agreement with MPS. We will get it regardless of financial results of sale. It’s much more than we are getting now and we will be earning more and more after every next season. However, it’s not our main benchmark. We negotiate with MPS final sum, which will be bigger than guaranteed one – explains Biszof and adds, that agency can earn only on crossing guaranteed sum. Ekstraklasa’s President doesn’t want to blurt the profit of Polish clubs. It’s said unofficially, that Ekstraklasa will earn 25% more than on current agreement with nc+ which is worth 110 million zlotys, but the league will probably cash in much more. Tomasz Wlodarczyk, the head of football journalists in “Przeglad Sportowy” says even about 180 million zlotys after the first year. It’s nc+ platform, which will be likely winner of the nearest auction. The 19-years old experience and quality of the transmissions are its main assets. From the other hand nc+ platform has got very small coverage (2,2 million clients) which got 35% smaller in this season because of the disagreement between nc+ and other broadcasters who were interested in sublicense to Polish league. - The best quality of broadcasting shouldn’t be the main priority of Ekstraklasa. Its partners would put their attention also to the coverage of transmissions. This is Ekstraklasa’s business too – says Adam Pawlukiewicz, content manager in Pentagon Research which studied media achievements of Polish league. It’s possible that Ekstraklasa would attract attention of foreign broadcasters. Biszof started talks with them before the agreement with MP & Silva. There are top broadcasters in the world which can become the partners of Ekstraklasa: FOX International Channels (which plans setting in Poland channel Fox Sports), Al-Jazeera which starts European expansion and Discovery Communications (Eurosport’s owner). Ekstraklasa is also able to broadcast its game on its own thanks to set Ekstraklasa Live Park company which produces TV signal and got permission from authorities for leading TV channel. Biszof admits that Polish league will perhaps follow Dutch league and set its own sport channel. - I expect the tv rights would be distributed to many broadcaster like it took place In Belgium league. Owing to that we would be able to watch Ekstraklasa even on a few channels in the same time. Needless to say the coverage of Polish league would be tremendous – adds Wlodarczyk. • Fans Interest in Women's Football in Eastern European Countries
FANS INTEREST IN WOMEN’S FOOTBALL IN EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES – THE CASE OF POLAND Piotr Broniatowski PhD student at Warsaw School of Economics [email protected] Abstract keywords women’s football, fans, , new markets for sport, Poland Aim of abstract/paper The main objective of the study was to verify the research questions relating to women’s football and its fans, as well as their knowledge and opinion of this sport. Q1: Is it possible to create a fan-group of women’s football, which characteristics would be different from the group of male football fans? Q2: From the sport marketing point of view, is women’s football less attractive than men’s competition? Theoretical background Women’s football is a still undiscovred and underestimated sport market. It requires not only financial support, but also strong social and theoretical background. How to break up the stereotypes and build up the popularity of women’s football not only in Poland, but also in the other East European Countries (EEC)? This is an important question both for marketers and scientists. Several articles were written on this issue. Given the space constraints of this paper, the review of research shall focus on only recent and most important contributions from the literature. From the authors point of view, the most important research in this field was taken in six German World Cup Cities in 2011 (see Preuss, H., Woratschek, H, & Durchholz, C., 2008). Also Jowdy and McDonald (2002) contributed to the topic, by preparing a study concerning Fan Festivals around women’s football events.

  • On the Political Dimension of the Polish Football Team's
PRZEGLĄD ZACHODNI II, 2017 RAFAŁ JUNG Łódź AROUND “THE WATER BATTLE OF FRANKFURT” ON THE POLITICAL DIMENSION OF THE POLISH FOOTBALL TEAM’S PERFORMANCE IN THE 1974 WORLD CUP The Poland vs West Germany match played in the 10th FIFA World Cup in July 1974 in Frankfurt am Main, frequently called “the Water Battle of Frankfurt”, plays a special role in the Poles’ collective football and historical memories. In this re- spect, it can only be equalled by Poland’s historic draw with England at Wembley Sta- dium in October 1973, which sent the Polish football team through to West Germany (FRG), to its first World Cup since 1938. The legend of “the victorious draw” turned into a myth in purely sports terms. The events around the Frankfurt game, in turn, became the basis for a myth with a strong political dimension. That myth was rooted in the political context of the Polish football team’s performance in the 1974 World Cup and was generated by the then communist government. The success of the team managed by head coach Kazimierz Górski was to serve current political purposes in Polish-West German relations. More importantly, though, it was designed to be politically exploited as part of the propaganda scheme called “the Second Poland”. That project was the flagship of the Polish communist regime, which was at the time headed by Edward Gierek, the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Polish United Workers’ Party (PZPR). *** Poland’s most famous and best remembered football clash with Germany, which went down in Polish sports history, took place on July 3, 1974 in Frankfurt am Main in the presence of 62 thousand spectators.

  • Football Politics in Central Eastern Europe: a Symptom of Growing Anti-Europeanism and Anti- Globalization?
Global Policy, August 2017 Football Politics in Central Eastern Europe: A Symptom of Growing Anti-Europeanism and Anti- Globalization? Roland Benedikter and Dariusz Wojtaszyn Willy Brand Centre for German and European Studies, University of Wroclaw-Breslau Abstract There is a discourse in Europe’s current academic and political debate about growing Anti- Europeanism linked to Anti-Globalization in the Central Eastern European (CEE) region. Football culture in the European Union’s East, particularly Poland, is perceived as symptom of such trend. Many of the local fan groups, although belonging to very different ideological and social stripes, conceive their actions more often than hooligans in other European nations as openly political – i.e. mainly as a form of resistance. “Resistance against the system” – including both the national, the European and the global “systems” – is their unifying bond. In most cases, resistance against one of these systems means to automatically oppose the other two too. To understand this particular embedment of football as a contextual political factor in the public sphere of Central Eastern Europe, which is causing domestic turmoil and negative perceptions in other European nations and worldwide, one has to understand the political, social and cultural role of rope’s most popular sport in the former “Eastern Bloc” during the 45 communist years 1945-1990. Policy Recommendations • The EU should put more attention into documenting and studying the specific contextual political sphere of its current “problem region” Central Eastern Europe, characterized by anti-European developments such as authoritarianism and a deeply split society. Contextual political factors have been neglected by the EU since the accession of the CEE, i.e.

  • BACK in PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020
No. 191 BACK IN PLAY No.191 • July/August 2020 • July/August No.191 EDITORIAL Theodore Theodoridis UEFA General Secretary A MOMENT TO SAVOUR, A TIME TO REFLECT fter the unprecedented hiatus brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, football is steadily coming back to life. This edition of UEFA Direct reports on the imminent return of our elite competitions, Aassessing the obstacles that the European football community has had to overcome together to successfully rewrite UEFA’s competitions calendar – both for the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons. UEFA’s return to play, with matches set to kick off in August, represents a milestone moment and the first chance to take stock of our journey to date through an extraordinary period. The COVID-19 pandemic’s outbreak in the spring brought European football to a standstill, and there was understandable concern that UEFA would not be able to finish its 2019/20 club competition season. Other major competitions, such as UEFA EURO 2020 and Women’s EURO 2021, were postponed for a year. The outlook was uncertain, and the ramifications were difficult to predict. As our president underlines in his interview on pages 6–7, despite these challenges, UEFA maintained a steadfast belief that better times would come. Now, following a great deal of hard work, cooperation and compromise behind the scenes, we are ready to deliver a match schedule in August and beyond that will bring the latest club competitions to completion, and set the 2020/21 competition campaign in motion. The moment when ‘live’ UEFA action returns to the spotlight will doubtless be one to savour, offering hope and joy to football lovers young and old.

In order to obtain the planned and crucial for every entity involved effects, there should be the relationship between the product and the sport [Pogorzelski, 2010, p 14]. Not every sport provides the opportunity of shaping the image safely and at the level expected by the entity involved. Keywords: brand image, sport, football, Legia Warszawa. Introduction One of the sports that due to its mass nature, enormous popularity or the number of potential fans may bring the image-related benefits is football (or soccer, as it is called in North America). In Poland, similarly to many other countries, it is the number one sport in terms of popularity. For this reason, it is reasonable that many football clubs, espe- cially those participating in the Ekstraklasa league or aspiring to join it, resemble profes- sionally managed companies with annual budgets estimated at tens of millions of the Polish zloty. The budget of the current Polish championship holder – Legia Warszawa – exceeds PLN 100 million (ca. EUR 23.2 million).
