IH Areas: Kootenay Boundary Situated between the Selkirk and Purcell mountain ranges, the Kootenay Boundary area is home to just under 80,000 people. Residents enjoy glacier‐fed lakes, majestic vistas, natural hot springs, a temperate climate and vibrant communities. Recreation is important to life in the Kootenay Boundary. World‐class ski resorts such as Big White, Silver Star and Apex are within a short driving distance of the main cities. Other activities such as Nordic skiing and snowshoeing are also popular. In the summer, beautiful beaches and hot dry summers lure vacationers from around the globe. Thompson Cariboo Shuswap Thompson Cariboo Shuswap covers the largest geographical area and services a population of 220,000. A region of spectacular beauty, agricultural abundance, and historic richness, the Thompson Cariboo Shuswap offers all the amenities of an urban centre without the hurried pace. There are year round sports and recreational activities, including ice fishing, curling, skiing and snowmobiling in the winter. Maternity NICU KGH‐Strathcona Building 2W Cardiac Surgical‐ The KGH 2W inpatient surgical cardiology unit has 14 beds and an amazing, supportive, team environment. Very fast paced, very high acuity! 2S‐Cardiac Medical. Formerly known as 2E which was a 20 bed Telemetry unit. 3E‐Surgical (Plastics/Vascular/ENT/Ophthalmology. This is vascular and general surgery unit. Lots of big GI surgeries. A 37 bed unit with 2 overflow beds that can have us at 39 patients. We staff with 5 teams of RN/LPN combo on days and 4 on nights. There is usually also a float RN and a Ward Aide on days. 3W‐Surgical (General and Thoracic Surgery) VAC dressing skills are considered an asset on 3W. 4S‐Pediatrics 4W‐Surgical (Ortho/Neurology/Trauma). – This is a fast‐paced, high turnover, 35 bed (plus 2 overflow beds) orthopedic and neurosurgery unit. As a member of our interdisciplinary team you will work collaboratively to provide pre and post‐surgical nursing care to this patient population. 4E‐Medical (Geriatric/ALC). Medical acuity plus geriatric behaviours, 36 beds. Medical Float‐This is a surgical unit with 20 beds. Staffing is a RN/LPN 1:4 patient ratio. Coronary Care Unit (CCU) KGH‐Royal Building 2nd Floor‐ICU A&B 4A‐Medical‐31 beds, General Medicine, Renal In‐patients and Eating Disorder as our specialty 4B‐ 32 beds, General Medicine, Oncology, Respirology (Chronic Vented pts – acute step down from Critical Care – for trauma pts and general medical patients coming out of Critical Care) 5B‐ 30 Rehab/ 8 Medical beds – PCC, x4 RNs and x4 LPNs on day shift; x3 LPNs and x2 RNs (x1 RN Workload 72 Hours Unit‐Medical. This unit uses a Primary Care Model of only RNs which offers the nurse the opportunity to take charge of their patient load, dive into charts and provide a full complement of care rather than handing it over to another caregiver. The unit is fast‐paced and receives patients with acute episodic events that turn around quickly and require fast‐paced thinking and excellent care planning skills. 5th Floor‐Adolescent Psychiatry KGH‐Centennial Building 5th floor‐Psychiatry 6W‐Medical (Stroke/GI) Emergency Department KGH‐Abbott Building Rehab‐30 Rehab/ 8 Medical beds – PCC, x4 RNs and x4 LPNs on day shift; x3 LPNs and x2 RNs (x1 RN Workload dependent on acuity)for night shift; x5 PTs, x3 OTs, x2 Rehab Assistants, x2 Social Work, x1 SLP, x2 Neuropsychologist Royal Inland Hospital (RIH) – Kamloops Ambulatory Care‐The Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU) provides a variety of services including minor surgeries (Orthopaedics, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Vascular and General Surgery), Urology, Gynecology (including Colposcopy), IV Therapy, Minor Treatments, Eye (Including laser), Endoscopy, Infectious Disease Clinic and Diabetic Foot Clinic. 4N‐This unit is a 25 bed general medical unit, specializing in respiratory, acute pain and symptom management for chronic, palliative patients and eating disorders. 5S‐is a 20‐bed General Medical floor with a team nursing mix of RN’s and LPN’s. This floor works with a Hospitalist, Respirologists, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Gastroenterology and General surgeons. Work collaboratively with Transition Liasons, an OT, a PT and Social Workers. Nurses work 12 hour days and nights as required. 5 North (Rehab)‐Is a 35‐bed stroke/rehab/medical unit that provides the opportunity to work with a diverse patient population. The rehab component consists of the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary team providing patient care for: paralysis, neuro‐cognitive disorders, stroke rehab, and post‐surgical patients all requiring rehabilitation needs. Surgical 6‐Busy post‐op orthopaedics and neurology surgical unit. 6North‐Is a post‐ operative surgical ward for Orthopedics and Neurology patients. We see elective total joint replacements as well as orthopedic trauma and urgent/emergent orthopedic surgical patients. Our Neurology population includes patients undergoing surgical procedures as well as Traumatic Brain Injury patients and non‐surgical injuries. Nurses work closely with Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy to help meet patient’s needs. 7N‐Unit at RIH is a 38 bed acute general medical ward that specializes in renal and cardiac patients. (Telemetry Nurse‐Cardiac inpatient). REGIONAL HOSPITALS Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) – Trail Services include 24‐hour emergency services, intensive care, acute medical, obstetrics, renal, and psychiatry as well as this 20‐30 bed surgical unit. Penticton Regional Hospital (PRH) PRH has just opened the doors to its brand new $312m David E. Kampe Tower (DKT) on April 28, 2019. This new six‐storey tower features new medical/surgical units, a new ambulatory care center, five operating rooms, three minor procedure rooms, two endoscopy rooms and one cystoscopy room, as well as a new medical device reprocessing department. DKT Level 4 – Surgical. 28 bed surgical unit Urology, general surgery and orthopaedics divided into 2 teams of 14 patients with team nursing 4 nurses per team. (5 RNs & 3 LPNs on days and 4 RNs & 2 LPNs on nights). PCC and Unit clerk on day shifts. Lots of interaction with Allied health OT/PT/SW/Pharmacy and the Transition Liaison RN. DKT Level 5 is general medical with 8 surgical beds and 2 palliative beds DKT Level 6 ‐ Medical Rehab‐14 bed rehab focused unit where our very busy inter‐professional team work cohesively to provide safe and competent care and support for medical and stroke rehabilitation clients in meeting their functional goals and transition to home. South Pavillion (SP2) –Moved to DKT level 4. SP2 is now empty. South Pavillion (SP3)‐Telemetry Vernon Jubilee Hospital (VJH) Surgical‐Vernon Jubilee Hospital 3 North‐Changed to Medical from ALC Unit with 4 MH Psych Geriatric Beds. This is a 20 bed unit (4 flex beds. RNs/LPNs/RPNs. 2W‐ This 28‐bed medical unit offers a dynamic program focussing on the needs of complex medical clients admitted with a variety of diagnoses. RNs/LPNs. 3W‐Sugical Unit. This is a 30 bed unit (6 flex beds). RNs/LPNs. Level 6‐Telemetry – Change staffing mix. This is a 28 bed unit (2 flex beds). Mainly RNs with 1 LPN/shift. Level 7‐Medical. Change staffing mix. This is a 28 bed unit (2 flex beds). RNs/LPNs even mix. Medical Telemetry and medical cardiology‐ There are 30 beds, 14 of which are monitored telemetry and 16 are acute medical. Very fast paced, very high acuity! East Kootenay Regional Hospital (EKRH) Surgical‐This is a 22 bed unit where nurses provide pre and post‐operative care.
