TASLEET TO STAND AT SHADWELL The high-class sprinter Tasleet will take up stallion duties at Shadwell Stud from next year after making his final start in the Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes at Ascot in three weeks’ time. A fee will be announced for the son of Showcasing at a later date. Trained by William Haggas for Sheikh Hamdan, Tasleet recorded the biggest success of his career when landing the Gr.2 by two and a half lengths last season. He also recorded an all-the-way victory in the Gr.3 in 2016, when the race was transferred to Chelmsford. He narrowly missed out on Gr.1 glory when beaten just a neck by The Tin Man in the Gr.1 last year and also finished second in the Gr.1 Haydock Park Sprint Cup and Gr.1 British Champions Sprint Stakes last season. REVIEW ITALY MACAIRE GR.1 DOUBLE ON MERANO’S BIG DAY The French Champion trainer Guillaume Macaire recorded a fifth win in the Gr.1 Gran Premio di Merano thanks to Le Costaud (Forestier), a talented but fragile seven-year-old who had already won the Gr.1 Grande Steeple Chase d’Europa in 2016. The chaser, who is co-owned and bred by Macaire with Terry Amos and Pierre de Maleissye Melun, was force to bypass the next Merano and was out of action for 22 months. He worked well in training and four easy wins over hurdles at Auteuil completed his preparation for this year’s race. Le Costaud dominated the event yesterday. He tracked the leader Santo Cerro (Sorbie Tower) and challenged at the start of the final circuit. The winning jockey James Reveley was careful at the Verticale and then asked Le Costaud to quicken. He went clear around the last bend and had too much in hand for last year’s winner Al Bustan (Medecis), who had made his move from mid- pack. Le Costaud scored by eight lengths, while Al Bustan was second, nine lengths in front of five-year-old Santo Cerro. The rest of the field trotted home well behind, with six of the 12 runners either pulled up or fallers.
