Where is the tamarin?: Locating monkeys in the politics of land and conservation in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil by Analía Villagra Advisor: John Collins The golden lion tamarin is a small, endangered monkey found in only a few municipalities in the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This dissertation explores the project to conserve this rare primate, a project that links together agrarian reform, forest restoration, agroforestry, and conservation biology. Informed by Brazil‟s social and political history, and drawing from 12 months of fieldwork conducted in 2008 and 2010, this dissertation argues that by looking carefully at and for the tamarin, we discover the interrelated political, social, and animal relationships that weave together to produce conservation in southeastern Brazil. iv For Mom, Papi, and Erin, who have always been unfailingly enthusiastic about my academic pursuits even when I myself had doubts. v Acknowledgements The members of my committee have all been immensely influential throughout my graduate school experience, even before they were part of the committee. Murphy Halliburton‟s “Science and the Politics of Knowledge” class in my first semester at the Graduate Center shaped my approach to anthropology and introduced me to an exciting literature on science and animal studies that, I can say without exaggeration, changed everything. As both department chair and the leader of a dissertation development seminar, Louise Lennihan watched my project develop from the start and provided important suggestions that have helped me think about my work as part of a broad and global field. Paige West first inspired me through her fantastic ethnography and later was kind enough to let me take her “Culture and Consumption” seminar at Columbia. Last but not least, my advisor, John Collins. Each and every meeting with John yielded voluminous notes, insights, and new literature to explore (equal parts daunting and exciting). Without his insightful feedback and patience through my occasionally frenzied e- mails and phone calls I cannot imagine what this dissertation would look like. I was incredibly fortunate to be the recipient of a Dissertation Proposal Development Fellowship from the Social Science Research Council. My thanks to Janet Browne and Harriet Ritvo for organizing the Animal Studies DPDF group and to my fellow participants, especially Shari Wilcox, for her boundless energy and passion. As our interdisciplinary group mulled the overlaps between human and animal worlds, Shari, with strength and humor, reminded us to take our work seriously, but not ourselves (too much). A student travel stipend from the Graduate Center at CUNY also helped me visit Brazil and get the lay of the land in Casimiro. The bulk of my fieldwork was supported by grants from the Wenner- Gren Foundation, the National Science Foundation Science, Technology, and Society section, and the Fulbright Commission. In Brazil, Marcus Pedlowski at Universidade Estadual do Norte Fluminense supported my visa and introduced me to important regional literature. There are not enough words to thank the staff and collaborators of the Golden Lion Tamarin Association (AMLD), some who are still there and others who vi have moved on to other projects. I was also fortunate to meet and talk with Louann Dietz, an American conservation educator and founder of Save the Lion Tamarin, the U.S.-based NGO that supports the AMLD‟s work in Brazil. Cristiane Benevenuto and Anselmo Nazare at CEDRO were unfailingly generous with their time and friendship. With them I visited numerous small agricultural communities in the area. Residents of these communities, both assentados and acampados, were also very open and willing to share their experiences with me. Special thanks to Dona Denise, Elsemiro, Gilda and Gilberto (oh to have had the skill to match wits with you two!), Bigode, Gaucho, and Dona Alice (you will be missed). With Cristiane I was able to spend long hours talking not just about work but about life, and I will forever admire her strength and spirit. It is hard to return from the field and leave such good friends behind. Finally, Claudioneia Muller da Silva and her family opened their home to me and were my “family away from family” while I was in Brazil. Those skins were the only register of the species. Our objective was to confirm the Marca’s marmoset existence on nature, make the first evaluation of its occurrence and distribution and to identify the potential threats. In 2013 and 2014, five expeditions were conducted on the Marmelos–Aripuanã and Madeira–Guariba interfluves (07°09'01"S - 7°48'10"S, 60°41'06"W 60°59'12"W) totalizing 63 days of field work. We conducted interviews with local people and visited 22 localities where we sighted Mico marcai in 18 occasions. Other twelve primate taxa were registered. Our records of Mico chrysoleucus and Callibella humilis extend the distributions in their south limit. A new species of Callicebus was found in Roosevelt-Guariba interfluves. Introduction In the last decade, more than 1200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been described in Amazon Rainforest (WWF 2010).

    1 Feeding Behavior of the Black-Tufted-ear Marmoset Callithrix( penicillata) (Primata, Callitrichidae) in a Tropical Cerrado Savanna by Andréa Andrade Vilela1 & Kleber Del-Claro2* ABSTRACT We characterized the diet of a population of the marmoset Callithrix pen- icillata in a cerrado fragment in SE Brazil. A transect was used to follow the group weekly during one year, registering life area and feeding behavior. A total of 67 hours of life area and 51 hours of feeding behavior observations were completed. The marmosets used an area of 6.85 ha with population density of 2.04 individuals/ha and the group composition varied between 10 to 14 individuals. The animals fed on 23 distinct tree species, eating fruit, buds, flowers, leaves, young stems, resin, ants, termites and bird eggs, with differ- ences in feeding habits between the dry and wet seasons. Our results showed that even in severely disturbed areas, marmosets may not only survive but also maintain a good reproductive capacity. This ability is due to their behavioral plasticity and indicates this species as an interesting social mammal to assist future projects of conservation in fragmented areas of tropical savanna.     Foraging behavior and microhabitats used by black lion tamarins, Leontopithecus chrysopyqus (Mikan) (Primates, Callitrichidae) Fernando de Camargo Passos 2 Alexine Keuroghlian 3 ABSTRACT. Foraging in the Black Lion Tamarin (L. chrysopygus Mikan, 1823) was observed in the Caetetus Ecological Station, São Paulo, southeastern Brazil, during 83 days between November 1988 to October 1990. These tamarins use manipuJative, specitic-site foraging behavior. When searching for animal prey items, they examine a variety ofmicrohabitats (dry palm leaves, twigs, under loose bark, in tree cavities). These microhabitats were spatially dispersed among different forest macrohabitats such as swamp torests and dry forested areas. These data indicated that the prey foraging behavior of L. chrysopygus was quite variable, and they used a wide variety ofmicrohabitats, different ofthe other lion tall1arin species. KEY WORDS. The prey of black lion tamarins (L. chrysopygus) may include a variety ofinvertebrates (insects, spiders, and other arthropods) and small vertebrates, such as anuran frogs (CARVA­ LHO et aI. 1989; PASSOS 1999). ln this note, we present our observations on prey foraging. We then compare them with studies of other lion tamarin species and discuss some of the unique aspects ofblack lion tamarin foraging in re\ation to the microhabitats they use.

    Neotropical Region Cotton-top Tamarin Saguinus oedipus (Linnaeus, 1758) Colombia (2008) Anne Savage, Luis Soto, Iader Lamilla & Rosamira Guillen Cotton-top tamarins are Critically Endangered and found only in northwestern Colombia. They have an extremely limited distribution, occurring in northwestern Colombia between the Río Atrato and the lower Río Cauca (west of the Río Cauca and the Isla de Mompos) and Rio Magdalena, in the departments of Atlántico, Sucre, Córdoba, western Bolívar, northwestern Antioquia (from the Uraba region, west of the Río Cauca), and northeastern Chocó east of the Río Atrato, from sea level up to 1,500 m (Hernández- Camacho and Cooper 1976; Hershkovitz 1977; Mast et al. 1993). The southwestern boundary of the cotton- top’s range has not been clearly identified. Mast et al. (1993) suggested that it may extend to Villa Arteaga on the Río Sucio (Hershkovitz 1977), which included reports of cotton-top tamarins in Los Katios National Park. Barbosa et al. (1988), however, were unable to find any evidence of cotton-top tamarins in this area or in Los Katios, where they saw only Saguinus geoffroyi. Groups have been seen in the Islas del Rosario and Tayrona National Park in the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta (Mast et al. 1993; A. Savage and L. H. Giraldo pers. obs.). P. 109968; 28860- 970; Casimiro de Abreu - RJ - Brasil. 3Department of Conservation Biology; National Zoological Park; Smithsonian Institution; 20008; Washington, DC - EUA ABSTRACT Marmosets (Callithrix spp.) have been introduced widely in areas within Rio de Janeiro state assigned for the reintroduction of the endangered golden lion tamarin (Leontopithecus rosalia ). The objetives of this study were to estimate the marmoset (CM) population in two fragments with reintroduced golden lion tamarin to quantify the association and characterize the interactions between species. The CM population density (0,09 ind/ha) was higher than that of the golden lion tamarin (0,06 ind/ha). The mean association index between tamarins and marmosets varied among groups and seasons (winter=62% and summer=35%). During the winter, competition resulted in increases in territorial and foraging behavior when associated with marmosets. Evidence of benefits during the summer was reduced adult vigilance while associated to marmosets. Golden lion tamarins were also observed feeding on gums obtained from tree gouges made by the marmosets.

It was first recorded by Prinz Maximilian zu Wied-Neuwied during his travels in 1815–1816. Its validity was questioned by Hershkovitz (1977, Living New World Monkeys [Platyrrhini], Chicago University Press, Chicago), who considered it a hybrid of two closely related marmosets, C. penicillata and C. geoffroyi. Vivo (99, Taxonomia de Callithrix Erxleben 1777 [Callitrichidae, Primates], Fundação Biodiversitas, Belo Hori- zonte), on the other hand, while demonstrating it was not a hybrid, argued that it was merely a dark variant of C. penicillata. We discuss a number of aspects concerning the taxonomic history of the forms penicillata, jordani, and kuhlii and the validity of the form kuhlii, examining the supposition that it may be a hybrid, besides the evidence concerning vocalizations, morphology, pelage, and ecology.

Behavioural and ecological aspects of black tufted-ear marmosets, Callithrix penicillata (Geoffroy, 1812)(Primates: Callitrichidae) in a semi- urban environment MARINA NOGUEIRA DOS SANTOS1, MARINA HENRIQUES LAGE DUARTE 1,2 AND ROBERT JOHN YOUNG3 O mico-estrela (Callithrix penicillata) é uma pequena espécie de primata neotropical que vive em vários tipos de ambientes como Cerrado e Mata Atlântica, podendo também ocupar áreas urbanas. Pesquisas já mostraram que a disponibilidade de recurso alimentar afeta a área de vida, o tamanho de grupo e o comportamento da espécie na natureza. Os objetivos deste estudo foram investigar o comportamento do mico-estrela em um ambiente urbanizado e a influência de recurso alimentar (estimado) na área de vida e na densidade populacional. O estudo foi realizado por meio de observações diretas (84 horas) com quatro grupos de mico-estrela vivendo nas dependências do zoológico de Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brasil. Os resultados mostraram que apesar de viverem em ambiente urbano, estes micos tem áreas de vida (2,85ha), tamanhos dos grupos (média=5,7 indivíduos) e densidades populacionais (2,19 ind/ha) parecidos com os valores obtidos para a espécie nativa. Os animais estudados, passaram a maior parte do dia se deslocando (22,45%), descansando (16,58%), inativos alertas (14,95%) e alimentando-se (6,74%). Estes resultados mostram que o padrão de atividade e o repertório comportamental exibidos pelos animais deste estudo são similares aos apresentados na natureza e portanto, evidenciam a capacidade de adaptação da espécie em ambientes antrópicos.
