DESCRIPTION & COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION

The Perry Hilltop Citizens Council (PHCC) is working with members of our community to keep it affordable, build pride, and improve the quality of life so that our neighborhood will flourish. Among our efforts, we are creating a parklet at the intersection of Perrysville Ave. and Federal St. which will serve as an entry to Perry Hilltop and Fineview. We have partnered with the Fineview Citizens Council (FCC), the Allegheny City Society (ACS) and The Pittsburgh Project (TPP) to create a fabulous mosaic mural gateway and parklet. The clay elements were designed and created by 25 students at TPP under the supervision of their art instructor Sandy Kessler and artist Linda Wallen. These included approximately 20 middle school students along with several high school and elementary school students.

The students met with members of ACS who took them on a tour of our neighborhoods, pointing out various historical sites, some of which are included in the mural. The students also met with eight elders from Perry Hilltop and Fineview to learn from their experience. Sixteen community volunteers assisted the artists in assembly of mural, creating the glass tile background, grouting and polishing it. We have now moved to the next phase: permitting, construction and landscaping. We thank Desmone Architects who prepared the plans, Red Swing Group who prepared the survey, and RAL Design & Horticultural Services who is providing the landscaping design and assistance, for their contributions. We also appreciate all of those who contributed financially to this project through IOBY and thank the Sprout Fund/One Northside and City of Pittsburgh for the Love Your (Resilient) Block for grants that provided financial support.

PROJECT ACTIVITIES

n October 6: Students from The Pittsburgh Project (TPP) and artists Linda Wallen and Sandy Kessler engage in interactive session with John Canning and Ruth McCarton of the Allegheny City Society (ACS) regarding the history of Perry

g

Hilltop and Fineview. They share old photographs and brochures. i

October 13: John Canning and Ruth McCarton of the Allegheny City Society (ACS) lead students and artists on a tour of the two neighborhoods to highlight historic features. S October 20: Students interview eight local citizens, older residents; make notes and drawings. Following this, Linda makes maquette of the three panels and Sandy and a student enlarge the images to life size 3X5 brown paper panels.

October 26: Proposal presented at community meeting at The Pittsburgh Project; suggestions solicited. y

In successive classes at TPP: a · Linda Wallen shows students how to throw slabs of clay and transfer a shape to the slab;

February 1: Ceramic pieces are unloaded and returned to TPP by artists and community volunteers. H

February 15: Robin Alexander presents two sketches provided by Desmone Architects at PHCC/FCC’s first planning meeting. Participants unanimously agree on second sketch. Alexander follows up with architects.

Feb 16, 18, 19 and 25 (4 hour sessions): Community volunteers work with the artists to assemble the colorful clay pieces onto cement boards according to photographs taken in the classroom before firing. Each piece is fixed to the panel y using polymer-modified mortar, Thin Set. Glass tiles, mirror pieces and flat glass globs are glued to the cement board using an industrial-strength PVA glue, Weldbond. r Feb 26 and 27 (four hour sessions): Community volunteers work with the artists to grout, polish, and seal mosaic panels. r March, 2017: Desmone Architects provide three preliminary sketches of supportive structure for mosaic mural. PHCC and FCC boards review and provide comments. e

March 14, 2017: Robin Alexander presents report on progress of project at second planning committee meeting, provides tentative time frame for completion of project and solicits volunteers to meet with landscaper for plant selection. P March 20 – 23, 2017: Desmone Architects provide new sketches incorporating feedback; PHCC and FCC boards review and select final plan.
