It combines an extensive engagement with the music of the Grateful Dead, as well as other related musicians, along with a wide variety of readings from non- musical history, political science, philosophy and cultural studies in order to encourage a deep reflection on what the countercultures of the 1960s meant in their heyday, and what their descendants continue to mean today in both musical and non-musical realms. It aims to be both an introduction to those interested in the Grateful Dead, though largely born after the group’s disbandment in 1995, as well as to appeal to those with a broader interest in recent cultural history. Because the University of California – Santa Cruz is the home of the Grateful Dead Archive, students are encouraged to make use of it.     Music 203H: The Collective Improvisational Practices of the Grateful Dead – Syllabus Instructor: Dr. Melvin Backstrom [email protected] Class Schedule: Monday, 4-5:30PM Music Center 130 Monday, 5:30-7PM Music Center 114 Office Hours: Monday, 2-3 or by appointment Room #126 Course Description The goal of this performance-practice seminar-ensemble is to enable its participants to learn about and apply collective improvisational practices, such as those of the Grateful Dead (as well as of its jam-band progenitors), to their own musical activities. Each week will consist of 90 minutes focused on discussing assigned listenings and readings, as well as some theoretical instruction, followed by 90 minutes playing music as an ensemble in order to apply and develop the skills and practices previously discussed. A particular area of focus will be on expanding listening skills in order to facilitate in-the-moment engagement with musical sound. Another important concern will be encouraging an ecumenical stylistic repertoire in which the widest possible array of music—from popular song forms to the furthest reaches of the experimental avant-garde—are not only available for use, but can also be brought into dialogue. Music of the Grateful Dead will provide some of the material that will be used as “jumping off” material for the ensemble’s collective improvisations, but we will explore other music in a Grateful Dead-like manner as well. One of the missions of the site is not only to introduce you to the bands, review the shows and give you tour dates but we're really trying to let you see what goes on in all phases of the scene, from booking shows (read my Andrew Stahl article) to helping publicize them (yet to come) to playing jam bands on the radio (again just wait...). This month, I continue the series with a Toni Brown interview. Toni, as I am sure you well know, is the publisher of Relix magazine. She's been involved with Relix for more than eighteen years now and she has a fine perspective on what's happening with this music. However Toni also brings a bit more to the table as she is currently gigging with her Toni Brown Band and is currently recording a follow-up to her debut disc (in which she enlisted the very fine David Nelson Band to join her in the studio). L GRATEFUL DEAD: Dick’s Picks Vol. 12—Providence Civic D Center 6/26/74 & Boston Garden 6/28/74 (3-CD Set) Combining the second sets of two different nights is not U standard operating procedure for the Dick’s Picks series of A live Dead shows, but this volume is the exception that proves the rule—the playing is so extraordinary, and the repertoire so unusual, that one can understand why Dick F E Latvala played more curator than archivist on Vol. 12. The first disc picks up the second set from Providence three songs in, featuring a short jam that leads into what many E have labeled the most extraordinary live version of “China Cat Sunflower” ever recorded, complete with a sublime transition D (“Mud Love Buddy Jam” a.k.a. “Mind Left Body Jam”) into “I Know You Rider.” The T revelatory moments continue throughout the Providence set, highlighted by a dazzling, 15-minute “Spanish Jam.” But the second set of the Boston show—which appears here complete, beginning on CD two after a superb encore performance of “Eyes of the World” from Providence—is the one that has passed into legend among Dead fans (that it begins A with a rare performance of Phil Lesh and Ned Lagin’s electronic music piece “Seastones” gives you an idea of what an adventurous night this was).

When the music is men- tioned, the references are usually to the best- known songs on The Dead’s two iconic 1970 studio albums, Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty (“Uncle John’s Band,” “Casey Jones,” “Truckin’”), and their one Top 40 hit from 1987, “Touch of Grey.” Although journalists occasionally pay lip service to the band’s penchant for improvisation,1 such accounts, until re- cently, seldom have displayed understanding and appreciation for the most distinctive aspect of the band’s musical achievement, which I believe is the art of collective free- form improvisation: the ability to improvise in a col- lective mode in which all musicians contribute to various extents and in various ways to a performed group exploration. Much of the scholarly work to date has focused more on The Dead as a cultural phenomenon rather than as a group of skilled improvisational mu- sicians or as performers.2

    Top Albums of 2020 By Hayden Goodridge Looking over the stacks of records released throughout this (hopefully) once-in-a-lifetime year, it’s surprising to be reminded of the drastic lifestyle changes none of us could seem to avoid. I’ve been compiling year-end album lists for quite a few years, but this year in review carries greater emotional attachment than I’ve experienced years prior. For each album I recall hearing, I’m also given a snapshot of the level of fear, grief, numbness, etc. I felt in reaction to the state of the outside world on first listen. Music—and any form of art for that matter—has been a necessary coping mechanism in this period of tremendous uncertainty. To the artists that made it into this personal list of favorites, I extend gratitude for the comfort, distraction, and jams they provided us at the shaky start of a new decade.
