Cobra Fakir Press Quotes
WHAT THE PRESS HAS SAID ABOUT MIRIODOR COBRA FAKIR CUNEIFORM 2013 “The band is nestled within a Rock in Opposition (R.I.O) stylization that transcends progressive rock... Steeped in experimentalism. ... The band unites hi-tech electronics with acoustic-electric frameworks and colorific layers of sound. They fuse some razzle- dazzle type escapades with zinging odd-metered ostinatos, quirky deviations and regimented patterns. ... "Maringouin," boasts a hummable melody line, driven by a warm electric piano riff... majestic choruses... this piece would serve as the most radio accessible entry on the album. ... A superfine album by this time-honored unit.” [4 stars] - Glenn Astarita, All About Jazz, February 2014 “French-Canadian band Miriodor have carved out an instantly recognisable sound that straddles avant rock and jazz, and in the process have become stalwarts of the Rock In Opposition scene. ... Miriodor’s sound is accessible, playful, and rarely ventures down wilfully dark and obscure alleys. ... This album is...a good place to start with RIO. ...Cobra Fakir, or “Snake Charmer”, is a suitably hypnotic and involving album... The title track..unwinds slowly into a... second segment, Univers Zero with a lighter touch. One can hear Henry Cow’s more accessible melodic structures in here, too. ... some fabulous and tricky interplay, the rhythm section keeping things in strict control. ... Entirely instrumental, the titles have the freedom to say what they want. So we have pulsing songs about bicycle races rubbing shoulders with…speed dating on Mars. ...fun and adventure...runs through Cobra Fakir. ... We have been well and truly entertained. ... Anyone with a sense of wonder at the way some musicians can get the old synapses firing in perhaps unexpected ways should definitely investigate this complex but highly enjoyable album. -

Contact: [email protected] Journal of Jazz Studies vol. 11, no. 2, pp. 29-77 (2016) Flamenco Jazz: An Analytical Study Peter Manuel Since the 1990s, the hybrid genre of flamenco jazz has emerged as a dynamic and original entity in the realm of jazz, Spanish music, and the world music scene as a whole. Building on inherent compatibilities between jazz and flamenco, a generation of versatile Spanish musicians has synthesized the two genres in a wide variety of forms, creating in the process a coherent new idiom that can be regarded as a sort of mainstream flamenco jazz style. A few of these performers, such as pianist Chano Domínguez and wind player Jorge Pardo, have achieved international acclaim and become luminaries on the Euro-jazz scene. Indeed, flamenco jazz has become something of a minor bandwagon in some circles, with that label often being adopted, with or without rigor, as a commercial rubric to promote various sorts of productions (while conversely, some of the genre’s top performers are indifferent to the label 1). Meanwhile, however, as increasing numbers of gifted performers enter the field and cultivate genuine and substantial syntheses of flamenco and jazz, the new genre has come to merit scholarly attention for its inherent vitality, richness, and significance in the broader jazz world. -

In the Studio: the Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006)
21 In the Studio: The Role of Recording Techniques in Rock Music (2006) John Covach I want this record to be perfect. Meticulously perfect. Steely Dan-perfect. -Dave Grohl, commencing work on the Foo Fighters 2002 record One by One When we speak of popular music, we should speak not of songs but rather; of recordings, which are created in the studio by musicians, engineers and producers who aim not only to capture good performances, but more, to create aesthetic objects. (Zak 200 I, xvi-xvii) In this "interlude" Jon Covach, Professor of Music at the Eastman School of Music, provides a clear introduction to the basic elements of recorded sound: ambience, which includes reverb and echo; equalization; and stereo placement He also describes a particularly useful means of visualizing and analyzing recordings. The student might begin by becoming sensitive to the three dimensions of height (frequency range), width (stereo placement) and depth (ambience), and from there go on to con sider other special effects. One way to analyze the music, then, is to work backward from the final product, to listen carefully and imagine how it was created by the engineer and producer. To illustrate this process, Covach provides analyses .of two songs created by famous producers in different eras: Steely Dan's "Josie" and Phil Spector's "Da Doo Ron Ron:' Records, tapes, and CDs are central to the history of rock music, and since the mid 1990s, digital downloading and file sharing have also become significant factors in how music gets from the artists to listeners. Live performance is also important, and some groups-such as the Grateful Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and more recently Phish and Widespread Panic-have been more oriented toward performances that change from night to night than with authoritative versions of tunes that are produced in a recording studio. -

A City "... Waiting for the Sunrise " : Toronto in Song and Sound*
A City "... Waiting for the Sunrise " : Toronto in Song and Sound* Michael J. Doucet Abstract: One aspect of urban culture is examined to evaluate Toronto's position within the urban hierarchy, namely, the production of songs and sounds about the city. Although much music has been performed and created in Toronto over the years, and many songs have been urritten about a variety of features of life in the city, the musical images of Toronto remain largely unknown beyond its borders—even to many of the city's own residents. If Toronto is a "world-class city," the evidence for such a claim would have to be found on other dimensions than the one explored here. No one ever wrote / A single note / About Toronto. — Johnny Wayne and Frank Shuster (19%) I find that lately, I'm missing old Toronto, Where bass is strong and drums are full of fire. — from the Lenny Breau song "New York City" (1987) No nation can exist by the balance sheet alone. Stories, song, dance, music, art and the rest are the lifeblood of a country, the cultural images defining a people just as surely as their geography and the gross national product. — Robert Lewis, editor of Maclean's (19%) Interestingly, though, we don't seem to have an immediately identifiable style. The last time anyone spoke about a 'Toronto Sound' [former Mayor] Alan Lamport was booting hippies out of Yorkville. Unlike a Nashville or Manchester, there isn't any one thing that makes you say 'That's Toronto' -- Bob Mackowycz, writer and broadcaster (1991) Toronto itself doesn't have a distinctive civic culture. -

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures. -

GÖSTA BERLINGS SAGA Title: GLUE WORKS (Cuneiform Rune 319 )
Bio information: GÖSTA BERLINGS SAGA Title: GLUE WORKS (Cuneiform Rune 319 ) Cuneiform publicity/promotion dept.: 301-589-8894 / fax 301-589-1819 email: joyce [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com (Press & world radio); radio [-at-] cuneiformrecords.com (North American radio) www.cuneiformrecords.com FILE UNDER: ROCK / POST-ROCK / INSTRUMENTAL ROCK /AVANT-PROGRESSIVE Amidst the resurgeance of all-instrumental bands on the international rock scene over the past decade, Swedish progressive rock / post-rock group Gösta Berlings Saga is one of the most exceptional groups. Able to create myriad musical statements that are memorable despite the absence of lyrics, its music proves that words can indeed sometimes get in the way. Gösta Berlings Saga’s music evokes the expansive, filmic potential of ‘70s instrumental music without repeating the past. Without retro affectation, the foursome Gösta Berlings Saga combine the cool sleekness of the Ventures and Shadows, the jazz-informed psychedelia of Gong, the wry humor of fellow Scandinavian Laika & the Cosmonauts, the textured knottiness of Yes (in their early ‘70s prime), the exotic evocations of film music (Howard Shore’s scores for Naked Lunch and Ed Wood), the eclectic whimsy of the Canterbury school, and the droll menace of Mogwai. Glue Works is Gösta Berlings Saga’s third album, its first recording released outside Sweden, and its first on Cuneiform. It is one of the most breathtaking instrumental albums to come out in recent years, capable of sending shivers down your spine one minute and making you wonder…what’s next? Cuneiform asked the Swedish group for some of their thoughts on Glue Works, here’s what they said: For glue to work it is of importance that the molecules involved are polarized – that is, they have a positive end and a negative end.
