STATE Adelaide, January 2004 WEATHER Hot Free NEW WHO FOR TV IN 2005 by staff writers DETAILS are firming on the return of Doctor Who to free to air television in 2005. In an interview with BBCi , Russell T. Davies, writer and executive producer of the new series <http://www.bbc.co.uk/cult/doctorwho/newtv/> revealed the format — "At the moment, we're plan- ning thirteen episodes, 45 minutes long. The 13 would be a mixture of one-off episodes, and two- parters, complete with cliffhangers." He anticipates an ongoing production, and has even given us the name of the Doctor’s companion — Rose. "A screaming girly companion is unaccept- O able now," he claimed, suggesting Buffy the Vampire Slayer as proof of this. ut t N No Davies admits that prior to the show being confirmed he had thought that ow ! budget constraints would ensure an Earthbound series, but now he has the option he wants a wider scope — ”Let’s voyage.” SHALKA IS A HIT! by staff writers BBC’S anniversary webcast Chameleon Factor # 78 is a resounding success. O ut t N No Fans have taken to Scream of the Shalka, ow ! as indicated by the ubiquitous internet abbreviation of Richard E. Grant as “REG”. BBC Sky Digital subscribers even had the option of watching the webcast on loop through their televisions over the New Year’s break. This was an enhanced version, running at 25 frames per second. At the time of printing the hit count was not available. However, due to the ongoing plans for continuing webcasts, they appear to be more than happy SFSA magazine # 14 with the response. q Continued Page 2 Welcome to the Mostyn Floyd Jr, Monkhouse, Page 2 Page 4 Shalka is a Hit q from Page 1 DUE TO the ongoing posting nature of the webcast, a high degree of reflexivity was able to be incorporated in the for- mat. Fans complained about having to restart the adventure between segments, and a play all feature was added. Feedback about the ongoing addition of credits between instalments saw this dropped. Part one was altered to feature these changes. m o c . The BBC has repeated Real Time, a webcast starring Colin Baker, y l i and seem likely to produce and repeat more in the lead up to the a d new television series. It is not known if these webcasts will continue e c following the debut of the new show, but on past evidence this a p seems unlikely. In 2006 the BBC launched two spin-off series, Torchwood (aimed at an exclusively adult audience) and The Sarah Jane Smith Adventures (for 11–15-year-olds), and what was once regarded as an embarrass- ment to the Corporation now spans the media landscape as a multi-format colossus.

  • Transmedia Storytelling Strategy
Transmedia Storytelling Strategy How and why producers use transmedia storytelling for competitive advantage. Cameron Cliff Bachelor of Film and Screen Media, Bachelor of Creative Industries (Honours) Principal Supervisor: Dr Jon Silver Associate Supervisor: Distinguished Professor Stuart Cunningham Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of a Doctor of Philosophy School of Media, Entertainment and Creative Arts Faculty of Creative Industries Queensland University of Technology 2017 1 Keywords Transmedia, storytelling, strategy, competitive advantage, multiplatform, Hollywood, Lizzie Bennet Diaries, Pride and Prejudice, Sofia’s Diary, Doctor Who, BBC ii Abstract Storytelling in contemporary media production exists in a landscape of rapid and continuous change. Practitioners and scholars alike have been exploring different methods for success within this landscape, fixating on multiplatform strategies that blend together novel and traditional methods of telling their stories. As a result, transmedia storytelling, the strategy of creating an immersive world through the coordination of multiple, unique narratives, has enjoyed a place of prominence within media production research for the better part of the last decade. However, the concept of transmedia storytelling has become clouded by ‘semantic chaos’ (Scolari 2009). Investigations from different disciplines and industries have formed separate silos of research that have divided transmedia and left professionals questioning the relevance of transmedia storytelling to their practice. Using strategic management theory to coordinate research from across different disciplinary silos (media and cultural studies, marketing and advertising), this thesis conducts an original, interdisciplinary study of transmedia storytelling. It develops an audience engagement framework specific to transmedia projects and a lens for assessing the competitive advantage of different transmedia strategies.

A bunch of presumably lefty – and foreign! – academics and fans were criticising Doctor Who’s racism. Although the Mail knows, just knows, that the BBC is a left-wing conspiracy and that the corporation’s privatisation is the very key to the survival of civilisation (see, for example, Kelly), the tabloid put aside its fury at public service broadcasting, rallied all the small- minded jingoism for which it is renowned and leaped to the series’ defence. Momentarily abandoning its anti-immigrant scare-mongering and Islamophobic harangues, the Mail, whose long track record of ‘not being racist’ is why it is so widely revered as the keenest arbiter of such matters, set the record straight. Under a long-winded headline and a couple of pretty meaningless bullet points, we were presented, really quite surprisingly, with a not-inaccurate summary of Lindy Orthia’s Doctor Who and Race, outlining some of its perfectly reasonable criticisms of the show as if they were damning indictments of the book.

  • Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi)
Panoptikum nr 11 (18) 2012 Andrew Cooper (Liverpool Hope Universityi) Adapting to Survive: The Cultural Regeneration of Doctor Who Doctor Who is the longest running science fiction television show in history and next year celebrates its 50th anniversary. This essay will explore two key el- ements which can be attributed to the shows survival; its ability to reflect cul- tural demands and its ability to adapt works for television from other mediums. Originally designed to ensure the survival of the show after the lead actor left, regeneration has been a key part of Doctor Who. Not only has the Doctor himself regenerated, now ten times, but his enemies, T.A.R.D.I.S. and the whole design of the show have had to regenerate in order to survive. Each new actor playing the Doctor „inflect the »Doctorish« qualities in significant different ways, providing new possibilities”1 as well as refreshing the audience with different perspectives on one continuing story. The show has had to change to fit modern technology, both involving interactive technology, such as webisodes, as well as up to date special ef- fects. For Doctor Who to remain successful therefore it has to be able to regenerate to its ever changing audience. In 1963 the producers of Doctor Who needed a monster for its second serial, thus on the 21st December 1963 Terry Nation’s Daleks made their first appearance. The Daleks, created only 20 years after the Second World War were based on the Nazis. This is why in 1975’s Genesis of the Daleks the Dalek’s creator Davros draws parallels with Adolf Hitler.
