DAY 2: PERTH – HALF DAY PERTH & FREMANTLE CITY TOUR (B) Today starting in Perth, the half day tour takes in all major attractions, including the Western Australian Cricket Ground (WACA). Then on to King Park botanical gardens, where you have time to experience a walk through the trees canopies on the Tree Top Walkway. Later, continues to Cottesloe Beach before arriving at historical Fremantle. Take a stroll at the bustling, dynamic port city or just relax with a coffee and indie vibe at the many restaurants and cafes. DAY 3: PERTH – ROTTNEST ISLAND TOUR (B) After breakfast, you going to explore the beauty and tranquility of Rottnest Island by ferry. The Rottnest Island coach tour will takes you out to some of Rottnest's most spectacular locations including the Wadjemup Lighthouse and the rugged West End and provides you with a complete interpretation of the island through passionate and knowledgeable crew. This tour will also provide you with an insight into Rottnest's cultural and historical heritage, diverse wildlife and fauna and social heritage. You will also have a chance to step outside and have a stroll along the boardwalk at the majestic look-out point at West End. Chances are, while you're there, you're going to meet a quokka or two. DAY4: FULL DAY TOUR (B) Choice of one of the following tours: 4WD PINNACLES, KOALAS & SAND BOARDING TOUR (L) This fabulous day out explores the world-renowned Pinnacles Desert, an amazing moon-like landscape. After stopping at Caversham Wildlife Park in the Swan Valley to view koalas and hand feed the kangaroos, we travel along quiet back roads, to the lobster fishing town of Cervantes for a picnic lunch where you can upgrade to lobster lunch with additional cost. Then it's onwards to the mystical Pinnacles Desert for an easy paced walk through the fascinating landscape before giving you the thrilling experience of sand boarding and 4-wheel driving over the vast sand dunes of Lancelin. MARGARET RIVER, CAVE, WINE, BUSSELTON, CAPE LEEUWIN (L) Margaret River is one of Australia's finest wine regions and blessed with stunning natural beauty. Stop for morning tea (own expense) at the iconic Busselton Jetty, the longest timber jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. Head to one of the Margaret River's oldest breweries for a gourmet platter lunch of local produce, with complimentary beer and cider tastings. Continue south to an internationally renowned winery to taste some of the best wines in the region, whilst gaining industry insights. Next it's a Mammoth Cave guided tour, then pass through the Boranup Forest to be captivated by the size of the Karri trees. Then off to Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse, the dividing point between the Southern and Indian Oceans. End of the day, stop at Margaret River township to stroll the main street. WAVE ROCK, YORK, WILDFLOWERS & ABORIGINAL CULTURAL TOUR (L) A journey through WA's wheat belt to Wave Rock, truly one of Australia's most incredible natural landforms. Heading east we enjoy morning tea (own expense) at historic York, the first township founded in the Avon Valley. Then visit Hippo's Yawn, a rock formation which resembles a hippo yawning. We then break for a lunch at the Wildflower Shop. See the spectacular Wave Rock and the ancient Gnamma Holes. Whilst here visit either a Wildlife Park or view a unique Antique Lace Collection. Leaving Wave Rock we visit The Humps and finally Mulka's Cave. We return to Perth with a stop at the quaint country town of Babakin for afternoon tea (own expense). Note: Profusion of the wildflowers depends on weather and other conditions. Rottnest Island is an A Class Nature Reserve, and is located just 19 kilometres off the coast of Fremantle. Transfers across to Rottnest Island can be booked through one of the two ferry operators. Rottnest Island ferry companies provide transfers to the island from Perth City, North Fremantle (Rous Head), Fremantle (Victoria Quay) and Hillarys Boat Harbour in Perth’s north. Rottnest ferries take approximately 25 minutes from Fremantle, 45 minutes from Hillarys Boat Harbour, or 90 minutes from Perth's Barrack Street Jetty. Accommodation is available on the island if you wish to stay overnight. Rottnest Island's famous marsupial, the Quokka, can be seen around the Island particularly in the mid to late afternoon. During the autumn and winter months (March to August) young joeys may be seen peeking from their mother’s pouch and by spring (September to November) they are hopping around.     YOUR VIRTUAL DISCOVERY VISIT – 48 TO THE HERITAGE STORIES OF ROTTNEST ISLAND The Virtual Visit series was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic when Rottnest Island was closed to the public due to social distancing restrictions and periods of use for quarantine from March to June 2020. Now that the Island is again open to visitors, these Virtual Visits are continuing in 2021 to enable a further enjoyment of stories introduced at the Wadjemup Museum, the Chapman Archives or sites around the Island. Enjoy, reflect and share. SITE EVOLUTION – WADJEMUP HILL SIGNAL STATION When the last pilot left Rottnest Island in 1903, a continuous record of more than 55 years of piloting ended. A new system was established with a signal station set up near Bathurst Lighthouse for the Fremantle Harbour Trust. The intent was for this station to observe requests for pilots from incoming vessels. Once a vessel was sighted, the news was telephoned to the lighthouse in Fremantle and the new, steam- powered pilot boat dispatched from there. Time Ball and Lighthouse at Arthur Head, Fremantle The Bathurst location proved adequate for vessels approaching from the North, but the topography of the Island prevented adequate observation for vessels approaching from the South. This was shown on the evening of 21 November 1903 when the barque River Indus stood of the Island by the South Passage. In the morning, when no pilot had appeared, the River Indus proceeded through the South Passage without a pilot. She struck a reef but without serious damage and docked at Fremantle. As a result of this incident, the Signal Station was dismantled in 1904 and re-erected near Wadjemup lighthouse in a location which offered 360 degree visibility.
