Georgetown University At the Ninth International Conference on Patristic Studies (Oxford, Sept. 5-10,1983), some 40 reports were scheduled for presentation under the rubric Instrumenta studiorum, i.e., institutions, series of publications, and projects which are of interest to patristic scholars and, more gener ally, students of early Christianity. As on previous occasions, so now, through the graciousness of the Conference's principal organizer, Eliza beth A. Livingstone, and with the co-operation of the scholars who prepared the presentations, it has become possible for me to offer reports on 32 of the instrumenta to a still wider public in these pages. My bulletin is an adaptation, primarily in style, on occasion in content (e.g., fresh information since the Conference); here and there space has exacted a digest. If, therefore, errors have crept in, they must surely be laid to my account (e.g., failure to grasp the exact sense of the original report, especially when composed in a language not native to me). It should be noted that a fair amount of information on the background, purpose, and program of some of the instrumenta is to be found in previous bulletins (cf. TS 17 [1956] 67-92; 21 [1960] 62-91; 33 [1972] 253-84; 37 [1976] 424-55; 41 [1980] 151-80; see also 24 [1963] 437-63). Erasmus and the Comma Johanneum
ERASMUS AND THE COMMA JOHANNEUM H. J. DE JONGE Extract of : Ephemerides Theologicae Lovanienses, 1980, t. 56, fasc. 4, pp. 381-389 Original : https://openaccess.leidenuniv.nl/bitstream/1887/1023/1/279_050.pdf 381 The history of the study of the New Testament is far from being a subject of wide popular interest, even among New Testament scholars themselves.1 Yet there is one episode in this history which is surprisingly well known among both theologians and non-theologians. I refer to the history of the Comma Johanneum (1 John 5, 7b-8a) in the editions of the New Testament edited by Erasmus. It is generally known that Erasmus omitted this passage from his first edition of 1516 and his second of 1519, and only restored it in his third edition of 1522. The cunent version of the story is as follows: Erasmus is supposed to have replied to the criticism which was directed against him because of his omission, by proposing to include it if a single Greek manuscript could be brought forward as evidence. When such a manuscnpt was produced, he is said to have kept his word, even though from the outset he was suspicious that the manuscript had been written in order to oblige him to include the Comma Johanneum. We cite the version of the story given by Bruce M. Metzger, since his work, thanks to its obvious qualities, has become an influential handbook and is in many respects representative of the knowledge of New Testament textual history among theologians. “In an unguarded moment Erasmus promised that he would insert the Comma Johanneum, as it is called, in future editions if a single Greek manuscript could be found that contained the passage. -

[JGRChJ 6 (2009) 134-74] EARLY READERS OF THE GOSPELS: THE KEPHALAIA AND TITLOI OF CODEX ALEXANDRINUS Greg Goswell Presbyterian Theological College, Melbourne, Australia For the New Testament, the oldest system of capitulation (division into chapters) known to us is that preserved in Codex Vaticanus (B 03) of the fourth century.1 I will use the notation V1, V2 etc. to refer to chapters of Vaticanus. Even a cursory examination of Vaticanus is enough to reveal that the divisions represent an evaluation of what are the sense units of the biblical passages. Each successive chapter in the Gospels is numbered using Greek letters written in red ink to the left of the columns. Capitulation is further indicated by a space of (usually) two letters at the close of the preceding chapter, a short horizontal line (paragraphos) above the first letter of the first whole line of the new chapter marking the close of the preceding paragraph, and sometimes by a letter protruding into the left margin (ekthesis).2 The system of 1. Textual Affinities of Papyrus Bodmer Xiv (P75)
TEXTUAL AFFINITIES OF PAPYRUS BODMER XIV (P75) by JOHN E. HARTLEY MR. HARTLEY is a graduate of Asbury Theological Seminary, Wilmore, Kentucky, where he studied under Dr. J. Harold Greenlee, a distinguished authority on New Testament textual criticism. We are glad to publish here an article based on his B.O. thesis which he prepared under Dr. Greenlee's direction. Trn. Bodmer Library has published, among other things, the text of a papyrus codex containing the Gospel of Luke and John, with an introduction and facsimiles. 1 This papyrus is designated Papyrus Bodmer XIV for Luke and Papyrus Bodmer XV for John. Professor Kurt Aland of Munster has assigned this codex the official siglum P75. Papyrus Bodmer XIV is the oldest extant copy of Luke; it is dated about 200 A.D.2 The text of Luke 8: 5-28; 10: 8-17: 29, and 22: 37-24: 53 is preserved almost entirely, along with fragments of Luke 3: 18-22; 3: 33-4: 2; 4: 34-5: 10. The purpose of the present article is to summarize the results of a Bachelor of Divinity thesisa in which the te~t of Papyrus Bodmer XIV was examined in order to determine its textual affinities. The first step in analyzing the textual affinities of Bodmer XIV was to collate it against the Textus Receptus. Emanuel Conţac Abstract The process of copying and translating the New Testament across the ages is sometimes bound to be affected by certain cultural predispositions of the scribes. Two passages where such tendencies can be identified are Romans 16:7 and Colossians 4:15, where two feminine names (Junia and Nympha, respectively) are understood as male names. The supposedly male identities are found in numerous manuscripts of the NT and in the vast majority of the Romanian NT translations, as shown by the present study.
