Ben Nevis sponsored walk

Unfortunately, and for various reasons, we have decided to postpone the sponsored walk up Ben Nevis in June, and are looking at the summer of next year to do this. Apologies to those of you who were looking forward to a strenuous day out in the Scottish mountains – your day will come! As soon as we have fixed an alternative date we will let people know via the AVN.

Annual Boyd Walk

This will take place on Saturday 12th May and, whilst not quite as strenuous as walking up Ben Nevis, will nevertheless give us an opportunity to stretch our legs and enjoy some beautiful Cheshire countryside, in celebration of Arnold Boyd, the famous naturalist and writer, author of “A Country Parish”. The walk starts from St Mark’s Church at 9.30am.

Memorial windows

Of the six memorial windows installed in the newly refurbished entrance porch, five have already been taken – so just one remaining at the moment (though there is scope for further memorial windows in the future in the outer part of the porch). Please speak to the Vicar if you are interested, and if there is a lot of interest we could commission the other windows. We ask for a donation of £250 to cover the cost of the work. Please have a look at the present windows if you haven’t seen them already – the stained glass is reclaimed from Barthomley Church in the area.

Thy Kingdom Come

On Monday 14th May at 12noon the Vicar will be leading midday prayers in Cathedral, as part of the national ten day cycle of prayer “Thy Kingdom Come”. Please join him if you can – make a day, or morning, of it in Chester – the country’s most Roman city!

Christian Aid Week 13th – 20th May

This year we are joining in with Christian Aid’s Big Breakfast events to help reach out to some of our world’s poorest people. Have breakfast at St Mark’s and make a donation to Christian Aid in exchange:

Monday 14th May 8.30 – 10.30am – breakfast for any villagers who can call in

Wednesday 16th May 8.30 – 10.30am – breakfast for cyclists and walkers passing through Antrobus

Friday 18th May from 10.00am – join in with our special “Pre-Royal Wedding Breakfast” and perhaps bring along photos and momentos from your own wedding day – wedding day dress optional!

Sharon Batey, Christian Aid Committee.

ANTROBUS W.I.

At the March Meeting we celebrated 80 years of Antrobus W.I. On arrival each member received a gift of a commemorative pen, nicely packaged and accompanied by a rosebud. As it was an open meeting there were quite a lot of visitors both women and men. The meeting started with a rousing rendition of Jerusalem.

The speaker was Dr Peter Kurer who spoke about the role of the Quakers in the Kindetransport of the 1930s and also their involvement in sponsoring adult Jews to enable them to come to live in Britain to escape the Nazis. Dr Kurer’s family had benefited from this – co-incidentally 80 years ago as our WI was beginning.

When tea was served it was accompanied by a birthday cake made by Caroline Jones who also made the cake which was part our celebration dinner on March 23rd. This was a very enjoyable evening with Father Michael providing an entertaining after-dinner speech.

In April Gav and Robin who are representatives of the volunteers who work for Merseyside and Cheshire Blood Bikes told us about their work transporting urgently needed blood supplies around the area. The organisation started in 1969 when a biker who was with a patient in hospital offered to take blood to another hospital. They save the NHS money and save lives by their speedy transport. Blood Bikes was the chosen charity to benefit from the 2017 Antrobus Carol Singing.

ANTROBUS FRIENDSHIP CLUB

On Wednesday 4th April at 2 pm in the Village Hall we held our Annual General Meeting. In the formal part of the meeting we reviewed last year’s minutes. Janet gave a review of our speaker meetings and outings over the last year and we all shared some ideas going forward. We remembered some friends we have lost over the last year and welcomed new members who have joined us. With an update on our membership finances, re-electing the committee members and general admin - we were soon completed and able to get on with our tea and cake.

By the time you read this we may be just about to go or have already been on our canal boat day trip on Thursday 3rd May starting from Stockton Heath Marina at 9:30 am, to the Barn Owl, Acton Bridge for some lunch and then sail back. Thank you to the Antrobus Trust for the donation towards this which has made it possible for us to go and take some extra friends from the village.

Then the next Friendship Club date will be Wed 6th June when we will go out for our Club Birthday Lunch at the Moorings and after that every first Wednesday of the month and for 4th July and 1st August we usually go out for an afternoon tea or garden centre visit which is always a pleasure on a summer’s afternoon.

We’ll be meeting back in the Village Hall from 5th September onwards. We are very grateful to the Village Hall for the continued use of the small room and to Pete for setting it up ready for us each month.

Please feel free to come along to any meeting we’d love to see you.

Antrobus Village Hall The heart of our community

Curry Night What a fantastic evening. We catered for over 100 people, our biggest evening outside of Christmas. Ben, Andy & The Hayes made some fantastic curries and Janet & the team a superb array of puddings. A Big thank you to Karen Peploe and the team for ensuring the service went like clockwork. Thank you to all who attended, the loyal regulars and especially the new faces who we hope to see again.

Loyalty card trial We have decided NOT to go ahead with this scheme. Feedback showed people are happy to pay the increased prices and have the flexibility of attendance, rather than having discounted rates. If Curry night is anything to go by we are all happy! Thanks to those who did make positive enquiries.

Dambusters Lunch - Sunday May 6th 12.30 for 1.00 This event has had tremendous support and we are now sold out. However, if you have missed out please contact Heather to be put on a waiting list as things may change closer to the day. Heather 07817 771172

Family Picnic - Monday 7th May Don’t forget the hall will be available for the family PICNIC on this day with the history exhibition available for all to view. (Details in last month’s news.) The good news is the new picnic tables will be available for all to try.

Village Hall AGM May 9th is the village hall AGM and we thought this would be a good opportunity to pull together a list of all the activities, fundraising and money spent on improving our Hall and community. Its always amazing to us how much has been achieved but we’re not very good at communicating it. So we will update you all in the next Village News edition, I’m sure you’ll be as pleased as we are with what has been achieved by a group of loyal volunteers.

9 - VILLAGE JUNIORS -

ANTROBUS COMMEMORATES LOCAL DAMBUSTER JOHN WILKINSON SUNDAY 6 MAY & MONDAY 7 MAY

May 2018 marks the 75th anniversary of the extraordinary Dambusters Raid. One of the Dambusters was an Antrobus man, John Wilkinson, who sadly did not return.

•St Mark’s Church will be open from 10am to 4pm on Sunday 6 May to allow people to view a small display by the War Memorial, which is unusually on the Choir Stalls. There will also be the opportunity to view the memorial to John in the Churchyard. No charge.

13 - THE GREAT OUTDOORS -

Antrobus Community Kitchen Garden

Isn’t the old adage – ‘be careful what you wish for’? Warmer weather…bah, humbug! The poly tunnel was resplendent with newly sown seeds, all either germinating or about to germinate and poke their delicate heads above the soil – a forest of small green plants – a gardeners delight!....and then came….the hottest day in April for 40 years and temperatures soared! In the first flush of warmth the tender green shoots came up expectantly and then, in the subsequent furnace under the plastic, many immediately shrivelled and died. Fortunately most of the earlier sowings were more resilient and survived the trial by heatwave.

We will replace the burned seedlings and ultimately, later in the year, the beds will be full of all the usual crops. However, the short heatwave was beneficial in other ways, drying the lawns (making it possible to mow) and making the soil easier to work.

The first of our new raised beds is complete and looking wonderful! Thanks must go to two of our members. The first sourced the wood at a very reasonable price, and then arranged for delivery. The second meticulously completed the construction despite difficult circumstances. Over the coming weeks we will be: • Moving our young seedlings into larger pots and into the cold frame and greenhouse, in preparation for planting outdoors • Continuing with the construction of the new beds • Working around the garden to prepare for………………… The ACKG OPEN DAY on 14th July 2018

We are delighted to invite you, your family and friends to visit us and wander round the garden. We will have produce from the garden on sale. Teas and coffee will also be available.

If you would like to join us please come along to our monthly meeting at the Antrobus Arms, held on the first Tuesday of every month, at 7 30 pm. Alternatively come and get your gardening gloves dirty at a working party morning held every other Saturday (next one – 5th May).

Great Budworth Garden Club

After a very cold and wet spring, our narcissi competition produced only nine entries, but we had an excellent winner, Linda Enderby, who our judge Jerry Bentley, and ourselves, considered the best, well done Linda.

The evening started with Peter Davies having to go to the top of Heath Lane, to direct traffic to the parish hall, due to the parking problems in the village. The Mammoth film company had been making War of the Worlds, which had been a fantastic event, and we've all thoroughly enjoyed it, prompting many members to stroll into the village to see it as a film set.

There are new laws with Data Protection, so members had to sign they agreed we could keep their email details for use within the club.

Then that was not all, our speaker, John Woods, had an accident and cancelled the day before ! This is when I managed to contact old friend, and garden guru, Sam Youd, the instigator of most of Tatton Park's success in the gardening spectrum. Sam came and gave us a wonderful evening with a Miscellany of Garden stories and advice, at very short notice. Everyone enjoyed his sense of humour and knowledge , and he was thanked ably by Guy Potter.

We have ten new people to fill the retired members gap, and we gave them a big welcome. The next meeting is on 8 May at the parish hall, when photographer, Fiona Lee, will talk about gardens in the north west. Plug plants will be given out, provided by Eddie Horrigan, which members must grow on for the produce show in September, and a sign up sheet for a July coach trip will be circulated.
