Academic year and daily schedule The academic year is divided into two semesters. The semesters run from September to February and from February to September. Each semester consists of two periods. Each period consists of seven weeks of teaching (the “teaching period”), followed by examination periods of varying lengths. There is an extra examination period in August, which is for retaking exams only. Vacations are around the Christmas and Easter periods and in the summer. See the calendar for details.

A course of lectures may, for example, have a 2/2/0/0 timetable. This means that there are two lecture hours scheduled for the subject in the first and second teaching periods and no lecture hours in the third and fourth periods. This means a total of 28 - 32 hours of lectures. All details on teaching and examination activities are presented in a timetable. These timetables are available on the TU Delft website and on Brightspace, the virtual learning environment for students, lecturers and staff. You can find general timetable information on the Timetable page of the student portal.

VSSD, Delft’s Student Union, also promotes the interests of students in Delft at the national level and is affiliated with the Dutch Student Union (LSVb) and the Dutch National Student Association (ISO). In addition, regular talks are held with members of the Dutch parliament to promote the specific interests of those studying in Delft. The history of the VSSD goes back to 1887. The union is run by and for students.

The VSSD offers a number of services for students, supported by staff. Additionally, the VSSD has its own publishing department, a bookstore and acts as an intermediary for student insurance policies.

The quality of education is very important at the TPM Faculty. It is monitored by the Department of Education and Student Affairs and optimised together with teachers and students. There are two main ways in which information about educational quality is gathered: On-line evaluations: each course is evaluated at least once every three years using an on-line evaluation. This takes place immediately after the exam of a course. These evaluations are anonymous. Course Response Groups: CRG’s are panel discussions held four times a year with a group of about 8 students. If you are interested in participating, you can contact student society Curius. Apart from the evaluations and CRG’s you can always contact Curius http://www.curius.nl or the quality assurance staff if there are any questions or problems. More information about quality assurance can be found on http://www.tbm.tudelft.nl/en/ ->student portal -> Quality Assurance.

Advisory bodies

Board of examiners The Faculty has one Board of Examiners for all TPM programmes. The duties of the Board of Examiners include the determination of examination results, addressing individual requests for admission and exceptions to the study programme (e.g. examination exemptions), and mediating between students and instructors. The academic counsellor can inform you on the proper procedure and can advise you writing a request or objection. Requests or objections should be received by the secretary at least 6 working days before the Board meeting. Only complete requests will be handled.

The Secretary of the Board of Examiners is: Ing. R. Kruiniger (Robbert) Room: a2.310 e-mail: [email protected] For more information on the procedures: http://www.tbm.tudelft.nl/en/ ->student portal -> Education committees -> Board of Examiners. For the forms see http://www.tbm.tudelft.nl/en/ ->student portal -> forms.

Board of studies (BOS) The Board of Studies advises – on request or otherwise – the management of the faculty, the educational management team and the Director of Studies about designs and implementations related to educational affairs. Half of the members of this board are students, nominated by the Faculty Student Council, (including the Curius Educational Commissioner), the rest of the board usually comprises members of the academic staff. The BOS has the right of approval with regard to components of the Teaching and Examinations Regulations and the Implementation Regulations. See http://www.tbm.tudelft.nl/en/ ->student portal -> Education committees -> Board of studies.

Faculty Student Council (FSC) www.fsr.tbm.tudelft.nl The FSR has a formal voice in matters that are of importance to students and the faculty. The FSR advises the Dean in regard to all TPM programmes and the position of TPM within TU Delft, as well as in relation to other faculties. The FSC has the right of approval with regard to the Teaching and Examinations Regulations and the Implementation Regulations. The FSR can implement your vision. If you have an opinion about the education at TPM or if you have any complaints or remarks about how things work at TPM, do not hesitate contact the FSR. E: [email protected].

Where to buy study materials? The study materials you need will depend on which Master’s programme you are following. The Digital Study Guide http://studyguide.tudelft.nl specifies the materials needed for each course. During the introductory lecture of each course, the instructor will update this information and provide any additional details. Because book assignments may change from year to year, it is wise to delay purchasing your books until your instructor confirms the ones required for the course.

Readers TU Delft uses an online ordering system for lecture notes (‘readers’) through Brightspace https://brightspace.tudelft.nl -> Resources. You can choose to have the lecture notes delivered to your home address or to pick them up at the Library. The notes will be printed as soon as payment has been received. A few working days later they will be delivered to your home address or you can pick them up at the Service Desk. It is also possible to download readers in pdf format. A useful tip: select the “IDeal” payment option to avoid delays. If you cannot pay online and you do not wish to make a bank transfer, we advise you to arrange your payment through a fellow student. If you have any questions about the order and payment process, please contact: [email protected].

Books Books are usually sold through Student Society Curius and the VSSD. For more information go to: www.curius.nl.

Laptop project http://www.studentitdesk.tudelft.nl/ The TU Delft enables (future) students and employees to buy a laptop at discount price, before the start of the new academic year. Check Support on the above mentionedsite to see how to handle in case of hardware problems.

Student’s Associations

Student society Curius www.curius.nl Curius is the student society of the Faculty of TPM. Its main goal is to monitor and protect the interests of all TPM students. Curius sells study books, organises course response groups, excursions to companies and lectures, as well as parties, dinners and receptions. Nearly all TPM students are members of Curius. Jobs and internships

Work while studying http://delftulip.ning.com/page/work-while-studying For a part-time job while studying

Internships Internships are optional for MSc students in the TPM faculty. Internships can be used to gain work experience at a Dutch or foreign company or institute. Internships can be arranged through the MSc coordinator or the MSc supervisor of the section where you are working on your graduation project. Please take into consideration that arranging an internship abroad can be a time-consuming process. Please go to the following website for more information: www.nuffic.nl/international-students/living-in-holland/working-while-studying

International students in Delft who would like to do an internship abroad should: • Ensure that they do not forfeit their right to Dutch residency. (Do not withdraw your registration at City Hall) • Inquire at the embassy of the country of destination whether a visa and/or work permit are needed for the internship. Current information is available at www.nuffic.nl/immigration.

International students who would like to do an internship in the Netherlands as part of their studies, will need an internship contract instead of a work permit. This standard internship contract must be completed and signed, and it must be shown upon request.

On national holidays in the Netherlands, the University, all public offices and many shops are closed. Although most public holidays have their origins in Christianity, many Dutch people consider them mainly as a day off work, without religious connotation.

New Year’s Day The Dutch celebrate New Year’s Day on 1 January. New Year’s Eve (in Holland ’Old Year’s Day’) is celebrated the day before, on 31 December.

Carnival In some parts of the Netherlands, especially in the south, Carnival (which has its origins in Christianity) is celebrated for four days in February or March. In Delft, Carnival starts with a parade of people in fancy dress on Saturday.

Easter At Easter, Christians commemorate the resurrection of Christ. The Easter holidays are always on a Sunday and a Monday in March or April. Some public offices, including TU Delft, are also closed on the Friday before Easter (Good Friday).

King’s Day On 27 April the Dutch celebrate King’s Day (in Dutch ’Koningsdag’). In recent years, Queen’s Day (the celebration of the birthday of the former Queens Juliana and Beatrix) has become more and more of an open-air party, particularly in , which attracts between 500.000 and two million visitors.

Ascension Day Ascension Day is rooted in the Christian doctrine of Ascension, which concerns the physical ascension of Christ to heaven after the day of his resurrection.

Remembrance Day On 4 May, all civilians and members of the armed forces of the Kingdom of the Netherlands who died in the Second World War are commemorated. At 20:00 hrs, two minutes of silence are observed throughout the country. On this day, TU Delft, shops and public offices are open.

Liberation Day Liberation Day is celebrated each year on 5 May to mark the end of Nazi occupation of the Netherlands in 1945, at the end of the Second World War. Although it is celebrated every year, it is observed as an official public holiday only once every five years. TU Delft, however, is closed every year on 5 May.

Whitsun (Pentecost) Whitsun is the fiftieth day after Easter Sunday, which corresponds to the tenth day after Ascension Thursday. It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and followers of Christ. The Dutch celebrate two days of Whitsun (on Sunday and the subsequent Monday).

Prinsjesdag The third Tuesday in September is known as Prinsjesdag (’Day of the Princes’). On this day, the king gives a speech on the government’s financial plans for the coming year. Although the day is filled with ceremony (including the king’s traditional ride through The Hague in the golden carriage) it is not a national holiday.

Saint Nicholas’ Eve On 5 December, the Dutch celebrate Sinterklaas, a predecessor of Santa Claus. Sinterklaas is the patron saint of children and gives them presents. According to the legend, Sinterklaas is still alive and lives in Spain. Each winter, he travels to the north by steamboat to deliver his presents. The evening of the 5th is known as pakjesavond (’Package Night’). The presents, which are often ingeniously wrapped (and are therefore known as ‘surprises’), are traditionally accompanied by poems from Sinterklaas. Although it is not an official holiday, it is widely observed, and shops usually close early on 5 December.

Christmas On 25 and 26 December Christians celebrate the birth of Christ. Most people spend these days with their family.
