Redacted for Privacy Abstract approved: I Tracyba Chazzonos, as presented here formy thesis, represents three chapters of what will be a novel of thesame name. Chazzonos is about Hal Perimutter, a cantor, who at the outset of the novel, isresigning his position of twenty years. The novelprogresses as Hal decides where he will go after Mirthgate Temple and what will be meaningfulto him. Hal's decision is complicated by the opposing forces thatrun through him: the conservative side that is attracted to ritual, tradition, and, especially, themusic of the ancient and respectable art of the cantor; and the liberal,neo-60s, almost anarchic nature of his personal life. In these three chapters, the dilemmas of Hal's lifeare introduced. He deals with the implications ofan inheritance that has allowed him to resign; he struggles with the mystery ofa relationship that is developing between his homosexual son anda new lover; and he is challenged by his long-time girlfriend to make the ultimate commitment of marriage.Throughout the narrative, Hal is affected by his attachment to the musicof chazzonos (the cantorial art) and by memories of family and tradition,nostalgic as well as painful. The questions these three chapters introduceand thatwill develop as the entire novel progressesare those of love, tradition, obligation, and how one struggles with opposing forces in one'snature. The choral music of Abbie Betinis is being widely performed and commissioned by prominent high school, university, and civic choruses. This study examines From Behind the Caravan: Songs of Hâfez, a five-movement work by Betinis for women’s chorus, vielle, oud, and Persian percussion. Four ghazals by Hâfez of Shiraz, a fourteenth century Sufi poet, are used as the text for Betinis’s Caravan. When considering a performance of this work, a conductor must understand proper treatment of the text, available translation options, Hâfez’s vast world of imagery, vocal demands inherent to the work, alternate instrumentations available and the benefits of each, how to approach improvisatory passages, how to engage heterophonic elements, and how to prepare a Western choir and audience with very little to no understanding of the philosophies of Sufism that heavily influence the work. -

And religion is no obstacle, for if the word ‘Islam’ means to submit to God, we all live and die in Islam.” Khwajeh Shams al-Din Muhammad Hâfez-e Shirazi (ca. 1320-1390) was born in Shiraz, Persia (Iran). He wrote nearly 400 lyric poems, called ghazals, and is the undisputed master of that particular poetic form. His mystical writing is based on Sufism, a tradition of Islam that is associated both with the Sunni and Shi’a denominations, as well as many other currents of Islam. I was particularly drawn to these four ghazals because of the elegant way they depict longing… longing for Truth, longing for Reason, longing for Kindness, Love, and – always – longing for the Beloved. -

Before West Side Story: Leonard Bernstein’s Boston (Music 194) Professors: Carol J. Emily Abrams: 10-11am on Wednesdays. Course description: This seminar will explore the childhood and early career of one of the 20th century's most renowned musicians and composers. Working in teams, students will fuse ethnography and archival research to explore the interlinking communities and institutions that shaped Bernstein's formative years. These include, but are by no means limited to, Congregation Mishkan Tefila in Newton, Boston Latin High School, Harvard (class of '39), and the BSO. Together, we will be launching a major collaborative research project. As a result, the expectations and work flow will differ greatly from the usual seminar. Instead of focusing on exams or individual research papers, “Leonard Bernstein’s Boston” involves lots of strategizing and working in groups. In other words, it requires a consistent time commitment and regular maintenance over the course of the semester, and it can only be successful if everyone pitches in at a steady pace. Regular attendance is essential. We will be functioning as a team, which means that it is crucial for everyone to be cooperative and collegial. All students will work on two levels: (1) preparation of and participation in class interviews and discussions, and (2) out-of-class research projects, pursued individually or in teams. There will be no midterm, final exam or traditional research paper. -
