CONFERENCES & SEMINARS

Updated August 14, 2009 In partnership with Institute for Safe Medication Practices Canada (ISMP Canada) Preventing Antimicrobial Resistance Through Antimicrobial Stewardship Mark your Calendars!

Thursday, September 24, 2009 Sheraton Centre 123 Queen Street West,

Over the past several years, an increasing percentage of hospital-acquired infections are being attributed to antimicrobial-resistant organisms. At the same time, studies and surveys suggest that as much as half of all antimicrobial use is inappropriate. Recommendations for preventing and reducing antimicrobial resistance in hospitals stress the importance of appropriate antimicrobial use, referred to as antimicrobial stewardship, at the institutional level.1

Co-chaired by Dr. Allison McGeer, Director, Infection Control, Mount Sinai Hospital and David U, President and CEO, ISMP Canada, this one-day conference will provide a forum to further development of antimicrobial stewardship programs in Ontario. Building on findings from the June 16th and 17th Ontario Antimicrobial Stewardship Project consensus conference on priority interventions for Ontario hospitals, participants will have an opportunity to engage in discussions with highly experienced leaders on how to advance antimicrobial stewardship in hospitals.

The agenda will cover a variety of topics including: • Antimicrobial stewardship: What is it and why is it important? • Ontario Antimicrobial Stewardship Project • Components of a successful antimicrobial stewardship program • Managing physician behavioural change • Implementing interventions: Prospective audit and feedback • Antibiotic use measurement

Please visit our website at www.oha.com/conferences for program updates and information.

Please note that this conference follows Patient Safety Indicators: A Year in Review and Opportunities for the Future, a conference to be held on Wednesday, September 23, 2009.
