ABSTRACT

This report was prepared to facilitate the use of scientific and common names of and mitesdealt with by the forestry community of Ontario andincludes most of the species recorded by the Forest Insectand Disease Surveyover the past 35 years. Insects and mites are arranged alphabetically by and species. Information provided for each entry includes order, family name, common name, host plant or in sect type and a rating of current importance.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This report, originally prepared by W.J. Miller and O.H. Lind- quist in 1971, revised first in 1975 andagain in 1981 by O.H. Lindquist and P.D. Syrae, is an alphabetical listing by genus and species of most insects and mites received by the Forest InsectandDisease Survey in Ontario over the past 42 years. Also included are a few insects that are seriouspests in other parts of Canada, but are not currently found in Ontario. The orderandfamily name are given for eachspecies. Only in one family, the Tortricidae (order ), have we attempted to separatesubfamilies; we haveused the term "Olethreutinae" where applicable. The scientific names are those in current use at the time of publication, andare taken from the most recent checklists,cata logues andother literature. Most of the names are those in current use at the Biosystematics Research Centre, Agriculture Canada, which is the custodian of the Canadian National Collection of Insects- Common names were drawn from the entomological literature and in some cases in which no common name existed, a descriptive name was devised by the authors. Generalized names wereused for less common species. In large part, the common names usedhave been approved by the Entomological Society of Canada and the Entomological Society of America.Great care has been taken to standardize the way in which authority nameshavebeen pre sented. The main host plant(s), if known, are listed for each species of phytophagous forest . The designation "general feeder" per tains toa combination of coniferous and deciduous hosts. Othernon- phytophagous or subterranean forestinsects as well as agricultural and household pests are, forthe most part, classified only by insect type, such as parasite or predator. Each entry includes a current importance rating. These ratings are defined as follows:

A of major importance, capable of killing or severely damaging trees or shrubs;

B of moderate importance, capable of sporadic or localized injurytotrees or shrubs;

C of minor importance, not known to present a threat to living treesor shrubs;

D beneficial, killing otherinsect pests;

E of major importance in other parts of North America but not currently known to occur in Ontario;

F insects of forest products or insects associated with the forest environment but not attacking forest trees or shrubs;

G miscellaneous insects of no consequence in forestry-

This compilation should be useful to any individual who is periodically confronted with unfamiliarscientific names of forest insects and mites in Ontario. It shouldalsoserve as a generalrefer ence for stenographic andlibrary staff, various othersupportgroups of federal and provincial governments, and academic institutions in which forestryand related disciplines are taught. It is not intended asa nomenclatural authority for reporting of research. ALPHABETICAL LISTING BY GENUS AND SPECIES ALPHABETICAL LISTIltfS BY GENTJS AND SPECIES
