.......................................................................................................... 209 2 Abstract This dissertation situates itself within the second decade of the twenty-first century, specifically within the contested space of the contemporary mainstreaming of queer and feminist politics and increasing access to formal legal equality for gays and lesbians. While representations of gays and lesbians in literature, film, and popular cultures have multiplied and feminism has achieved a previously unimagined level of acceptance and popularity, vehement debates surround the question of where queer and feminist political energy should be directed and whether the transformative objectives of such politics have been left behind in favour of those which pursue forms of inclusion. Critiques of post- feminism by feminist scholars such as Angela McRobbie (2009) echo Lisa Duggan’s (2002) notion of ‘homonormativity’, which describes the increasing complicity between institutionalized, domesticized homosexuality and neoliberal mechanisms of economic and social power. Likewise, Jasbir Puar (2007) has critiqued the ways in which rights discourses produce narratives of gender exceptionalism and what she calls ‘homonationalism’. Such debates raise questions about the extent to which feminist and queer subjects can be presumed to be inherently political. This dissertation intervenes in contemporary debates in queer and feminist politics through an analysis of literary fiction. Rather than focusing on formal equality mechanisms and discourses, its engagement with sexual politics is situated in the realm of affect and intimacy. Taking as its point of departure the second-wave feminist claim that personal and intimate transformation are at the heart of political transformation, this dissertation uses a seemingly anachronistic paradigm to critique linear narratives that position queerness and queer politics and theory in the present tense and lesbian feminism in the past. It argues that the utopian impulses of second-wave lesbian feminism overlap with those of contemporary queer politics, and claims that both foreground practices and conceptions of intimacy that mirror and prefigure broader social change. Exploring the complex ways in which politics are enacted via intimacy, this dissertation takes as its object of study the figure of the lesbian in contemporary Anglo- American literature, specifically engaging with the fiction of Canadian writer Ann-Marie MacDonald. Situating the figure of the lesbian at the centre of this analysis signals a specific historical, political, and social context. The lesbian, as a figure or trope, or lesbian existence, as a way of doing feminism, offers a productive point of departure for such considerations because of the ways in which both have, over time, been variously and often simultaneously

    1 Katy Shannahan OUHJ 2013 Submission The Impact of Failed Lesbian Feminist Ideology and Rhetoric Lesbian feminism was a radical feminist separatist movement that developed during the early 1970s with the advent of the second wave of feminism. The politics of this movement called for feminist women to extract themselves from the oppressive system of male supremacy by means of severing all personal and economic relationships with men. Unlike other feminist separatist movements, the politics of lesbian feminism are unique in that their arguments for separatism are linked fundamentally to lesbian identification. Lesbian feminist theory intended to represent the most radical form of the idea that the personal is political by conceptualizing lesbianism as a political choice open to all women.1 At the heart of this solution was a fundamental critique of the institution of heterosexuality as a mechanism for maintaining masculine power. In choosing lesbianism, lesbian feminists asserted that a woman was able to both extricate herself entirely from the system of male supremacy and to fundamentally challenge the patriarchal organization of society.2 In this way they privileged lesbianism as the ultimate expression of feminist political identity because it served as a means of avoiding any personal collaboration with men, who were analyzed as solely male oppressors within the lesbian feminist framework. Feminism?: Exploring the Lives of Trans* Individuals in Chicago Some radical lesbian feminists, like Sheila Jeffreys (1997, 2003, 2014) argue that trans individuals are destroying feminism by succumbing to the greater forces of the patriarchy and by opting for surgery, thus conforming to normative ideas of sex and gender. Jeffreys is not alone in her views. Janice Raymond (1994, 2015) also maintains that trans individuals work either as male-to-females (MTFs) to uphold stereotypes of femininity and womanhood, or as female-to-males (FTMs) to join the ranks of the oppressors, support the patriarchy, and embrace hegemonic masculinity. Both Jeffreys and Raymond conclude that sex/gender is fixed by genitals at birth and thus deny trans individuals their right to move beyond the identities that they were assigned at birth. Ironically, a paradox is created by these radical lesbians feminist theorists, who deny trans individuals the right to define their own lives and control their own bodies. Such essentialist discourse, however, fails to recognize the oppression, persecution, and violence to which trans individuals are subjected because they do not conform to the sex that they were assigned at birth. Jeffreys (1997) also claims there is an emergency and that the human rights of those who are now identifying as trans are being violated. These critiques are not only troubling to me, as a self-identified lesbian feminist, but are also illogical and transphobic. My research, with trans identified individuals in Chicago, presents a different story and will show another side of the complex relationship between trans and lesbian feminist communities.

Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com A butch-femme couple The concept of butch and femme identities have long been hotly debated within the participating in a group lesbian community, yet even achieving a consensus as to exactly what the terms wedding ceremony in "butch" and "femme" mean can be extraordinarily difficult. In recent years, these Taiwan. words have come to describe a wide spectrum of individuals and their relationships. It is easiest, then, to begin with an examination of butch-femme culture and meaning from a historical perspective. Butch and femme emerged in the early twentieth century as a set of sexual and emotional identities among lesbians. To give a general but oversimplified idea of what butch-femme entails, one might say that butches exhibit traditionally "masculine" traits while femmes embody "feminine" ones. Although oral histories have demonstrated that butch-femme couples were seen in America as far back as the turn of the twentieth century, and that they were particularly conspicuous in the 1930s, it is the mid-century working-class and bar culture that most clearly illustrate the archetypal butch-femme dynamic. Arguably, during the period of the 1940s through the early 1960s, butches and femmes were easiest to recognize and characterize: butches with their men's clothing, DA haircuts, and suave manners often found their more traditionally styled femme counterparts, wearing dresses, high heels, and makeup, in the gay bars. A highly visible and accepted way of living within the lesbian community, butch-femme was in fact considered the norm among lesbians during the 1950s.

By constituting homosexuality as an object of knowledge, heterosexuality also constitutes itself as a privileged stance of subjectivity—as the very condition of knowing—and thereby avoids becoming an object of knowledge itself, the target of a possible critique. The professionalization of gayness requires a certain performance and production of a “self” which is the constituted effect of a discourse that nevertheless claims to “represent” that self as a prior truth. Judith Butler in “Imitation and Gender Insubordination” This course takes the constitutive act of making in its title very seriously, offering both an historical and theoretical engagement with our current categories of sexual differentiation. It centers on that mode of difference which today is commonly called lesbian/gay/ bisexual/ transgendered and/or just queer, but which in other historical periods could have been called Uranian, inversion, sodomitical, Sapphic, butch, Wildean, homosexual, homophile and a host of other terms. More often than not over the course of human history it was simply not called anything at all—testament not only to repression, but to the potential for a different conceptual schema which did not see same sex sexuality as defining of what a person was-- indeed, which may have seen it as so normative that it warranted no additional name.

However, the South tends to neglect and even to negate certain peoples and their identities. Women, especially lesbians, are often silenced within southern literature. Where Tennessee Williams and James Baldwin used literature to bridge gaps between gay men and the South, southern lesbian literature severely lacks a traceable history of such connections.
