Il suo potere, quindi, era in grado di sfidare l'autorità stessa del re. Data questa realtà, Alfonso VII di Leon e Castiglia cercò di consolidare e rafforzare l'autorità regia che era stata minata nella fase precedente e di ricuperare la potestas publica. Così, negoziò con l'aristocrazia, cercando di includerla nel suo progetto politico, ma controllando ed equilibrando il potere che esercitava. Il migliore scenario per osservare tale politica è offerto dal sistema amministrativo delle tenencias. Therefore, its power was able to challenge the authority of the king. Given this reality, Alfonso VII of Leon and Castile tried to consolidate and strengthen the royal authority that had been undermined in the previous years and got back the potestas publica. Then he negotiated with the aristocracy, trying to include it in his political project, but checking and balancing the power it wielded.

    The election of Arnau de Torroja as ninth Master of the Knights Templar (1180): An enigmatic decision reconsidered Nikolas Jaspert (Ruhr-Universitat Bochum) Ever since Saladin took power in 1174, the Crusader States had 1 been slipping deeper and deeper into a serious crisis, a crisis which inevitably would also affect its most lasting creation, the military orders. In fact, the orders and their officials were an inextricable part of the struggle for power which would have such disastrous effects on the kingdom. Two dignitaries in particular stood in the eye of the gathering storm - the Master of the Templars and the Master of the Hospitallers. It has been calculated that in the years immediately preceding the battle of Hattin, the two orders were by far the most important landholders, owning up to 35% of the soil, and their military strength conferred on 2 them a vital role in the defence of the realm. Evidently, their senior officials wielded considerable power. This was the case both before and after the partition of the Empire in 1157, and especially during the era of the ‘cinco reinos’. Peacemaking was required to counteract the tendency of the Christian kingdoms to rivalry, particularly over territorial disputes.     Donaciones de Alfonso VII a sus fieles y servidores Las donaciones ocupan el capítulo más importante dentro de la documentación real que nos ha llegado de la cancillería de Alfon- so VII. Es un hecho que el monarca entrega constantemente bienes de su patrimonio, con objeto de favorecer a determinadas personas e instituciones. Por motivos relacionados con la misma tradición de los documentos, la mayoría de esas concesiones se hacen a favor de obispados y monasterios. Sin embargo, otras muchas tienen por ob- jeto reforzar la posición material de algunos personajes laicos o sim- plemente pagar servicios prestados o por prestar. Nuestra informa- ción en este sentido> aunque relativamente abundante, es bastante li- mitada. Si esas donaciones dirigidas a laicos nos han llegado, se debe en la mayoría de los casos, a que los bienes objeto de donación acaba- ron llegando a su vez a manos de las organizaciones eclesiásticas. Es fácil adivinar, que buena parte de la documentación no eclesiástica, se perdió a lo largo del tiempo, conforme propiedades y patrimonios fueron desapareciendo. A pesar de estas limitaciones, las donaciones reales a fieles y ser- vidores del monarca, representan una fuente de información enorme- mente ilustrativa. Permiten conocer muchos aspectos relacionados con la misma actuación real, como pueda ser la personalidad e in- fluencia de algunos de sus colaboradores, el tipo de relaciones que se producen con ocasión de los servicios, la naturaleza de dichos servi- cios o el tipo de recompensas con que se pagan. También cabe estu- diar las causas que motivaron las concesiones, que muchas veces so- brepasan el mero pago de servicios.
