Kort før sin død afleverede skuespil leren Robert Shaw følgende salve: »The best films being made today are by Americans for Americans in Ame rica. You cannot beat them. You must join them. England is finished. I never even go there anymore... There will not be an english film renaissance unless America finances it. And Who's the youngest British star today? Sean Connery? 185 ALCOTT, John - fotograf. • Raid on the School, Saturday 27 September 1975
14 RAID ON THE SCHOOL, SATURDAY 27 SEPTEMBER 1975 This Saturday started more or less like any other. I started work in the printshop at about 07.00 hours. Healy was at the Partys Education Centre in Derbyshire so I was able to set my target to finish late afternoon. I went back to my flat, had a bath, and settled down for a couple of hours sleep. This sort of day was fantastic. At about 18.00 hours I started my weekly tour round Fleet Street to collect the Sunday papers as soon as the presses started running. This meant that we would get a look at the Sunday papers several hours before they reached the streets. This was one of those rare weekends when there was no pressure to rush back to Healys flat; I was simply to leave the papers at the front office where a member of our Editorial Board would pick them up, scrutinise them and prepare for the Sunday morning Editorial Board meeting. The great god Linotype was on my side that night. All the Sunday papers got off to a flyer so I was back in the front office by 19.30 hours. I sorted one of each for the editorial staff and put the rest on a pile for me to take into the Plough pub in Clapham where I would sell them to the eagerly waiting punters (I had to finance a few pints and an Indian take-away somehow) and watch the Saturday night special football with Paul Jennings. Before going to the pub I decided to flip through the papers myself.

They were ‘plump and shocking pink, with noses that were long, perhaps for sucking up … soup’.1 Originally broadcast on BBC One during 1969–72, the series was repeated many times thereafter. On the night of 10 October 1974 the BBC showed a special episode, ‘Vote for Froglet’, one designed for grown-ups, in which the narrator informs the Clangers that ‘the proudest moment of the British people [is] a parliamentary election’. The purpose of the episode was, however, not to celebrate the state of democracy on the day the country went to the polls. Postgate had something he wanted to get off his chest. The grandson of George Lansbury, who led the Labour party during 1932–5, Postgate was from a left-wing bohemian family. Yet, as the post-war period developed, he came to believe that ‘the prospect of a just and loving social order based on the principles of true socialism’, for which his grandfather and parents had worked, would not materialize.

  • Complete Film Noir
COMPLETE FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1965) Page 1 of 18 CONSENSUS FILM NOIR (1940 thru 1959) (1960-1965) dThe idea for a COMPLETE FILM NOIR LIST came to me when I realized that I was “wearing out” a then recently purchased copy of the Film Noir Encyclopedia, 3rd edition. My initial plan was to make just a list of the titles listed in this reference so I could better plan my film noir viewing on AMC (American Movie Classics). Realizing that this plan was going to take some keyboard time, I thought of doing a search on the Internet Movie DataBase (here after referred to as the IMDB). By using the extended search with selected criteria, I could produce a list for importing to a text editor. Since that initial list was compiled almost twenty years ago, I have added additional reference sources, marked titles released on NTSC laserdisc and NTSC Region 1 DVD formats. When a close friend complained about the length of the list as it passed 600 titles, the idea of producing a subset list of CONSENSUS FILM NOIR was born. Several years ago, a DVD producer wrote me as follows: “I'd caution you not to put too much faith in the film noir guides, since it's not as if there's some Film Noir Licensing Board that reviews films and hands out Certificates of Authenticity. The authors of those books are just people, limited by their own knowledge of and access to films for review, so guidebooks on noir are naturally weighted towards the more readily available studio pictures, like Double Indemnity or Kiss Me Deadly or The Big Sleep, since the many low-budget B noirs from indie producers or overseas have mostly fallen into obscurity.” There is truth in what the producer says, but if writers of (film noir) guides haven’t seen the films, what chance does an ordinary enthusiast have.
