He is a Muslim religious and political leader from Kerala, a south Indian state. The population of Kerala is religiously diverse with 54.73 % Hindus, 26.56 % Muslims and 18.38 % Christians. The state is known for its composite culture and religious harmony. He was the state president of Indian Union Muslim League, the third-largest political party in the state from 1975 to 2009 and the Qazi (religious authority) of many Mahals (Muslim association centered in a mosque in a specific geographical location). He headed many religious and educational institutions across the state and practiced traditional Islamic healing. As a person belonging to the Sayyid family (descendants of prophet Muhammed) who migrated to Kerala from Yemen around 300 years ago, he already possessed a traditional authority over the Muslim population of the region. • Allamah Raghib Ahsan and Pakistan Movement: an Assessment
South Asian Studies A Research Journal of South Asian Studies Vol. 32, No. 1, January – June 2017, pp.235 – 245 Allamah Raghib Ahsan and Pakistan Movement: An Assessment Syed Umar Hayat Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. Altaf Ullah Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan. ABSTRACT This study is not a conventional one rather the subaltern pattern has been taken as a model to understand the contribution of a leader who played a very significant role in the Pakistan Movement for a long span of time for the sake of the nation without focusing his personal interests. That is why, despite very valuable contribution of Allamah Raghib Ahsan, his name has so far been in the dormant for the common readers of the discipline of history. But it is generally understood that without proper understanding of the contribution of the leaders who stood in the second or third stages of leadership who prepared proper ground for the implementation of the idea of Pakistan. To understand the role of Allamah Raghib Ahsan in the Pakistan movement it seems to be important to quote here a portion of famous histrican Toynbee‟s statement – “… I find that in a general way the growth of a society can be measured in terms of the increasing power of self-determination won by society‟s leaders; and I believe that the future fate of civilization lies in the hands of the this minority of creative persons (Arnold Toynbee).” Key Words Allamah Raghib Ahsan, Pakistan Movement, All-India Muslim League, Bengal Introduction It is a common understanding that any freedom struggle needs firm footing, basic idea, sincerity and philosophical foundation chalked out by its charismatic leadership and determination of the leadership as well as the general masses to transform the freedom struggle into independence.

Regional Overview: South Asia3-9 April 2021 acleddata.com/2021/04/14/regional-overview-south-asia3-9-april-2021/ April 14, 2021 Last week in South Asia, Naxal-Maoist insurgents ambushed security forces in a deadly encounter in India. In Jammu and Kashmir (J&K), military forces conducted a series of operations against an Al Qaeda affiliate. Meanwhile, in Pakistan, Taliban militants clashed with military forces and conducted targeted attacks. The ongoing state assembly elections in India sparked violence between political rivals and clashes over alleged election irregularities. Lastly, farmers clashed with police in North India during anti-government demonstrations over new agricultural laws. Over 400 Maoist rebels attacked police who were conducting an operation in Chhattisgarh state in India last week. At least 22 security force officers died and 31 more were injured. At least 10 Maoists were also reported to have been killed (Deccan Herald, 5 April 2021). The encounter took place in Bastar division, known as the stronghold of the rebels (Al Jazeera, 6 April 2021). This is one of the deadliest Naxal-Maoist encounters in terms of police fatalities recorded by ACLED over the past five years (since ACLED coverage of India began in 2016). Following the attack, the Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah stated that operations will be intensified to uproot the Naxal-Maoist movement (The New York Times, 6 April 2021). Days after the clash, the banned Communist Party of India (Maoist) released a statement that their fight was not against security forces. Instead, they denounced “the capitalist and Brahminical government” and called for a nationwide strike on 26 April to support farmers’ demonstrations against the three new farm laws (Hindustan Times, 6 April 2021).

Country Advice India India – IND37875 – Muslim – Hyderabad – Communalism – Police – State Protection – Majlis Ittehad-e-Muslimeen 17 December 2010 1. What is the MIM and what is its relationship to the Muslim Youth Association and the Muslim Youth League. Majlis Ittehad-e-Muslimeen Majlis Ittehad-e-Muslimeen (MiM), also known as the All-India Majlis Ittehad-e- Muslimeen, is a Muslim political party based in the state of Andhra Pradesh (of which Hyderabad is the capital). It has been described as “the most powerful Muslim party in India”.1 The MiM‟s sway on Muslims in Hyderabad is said to be “almost complete, at least at the time of elections”.2 The party had five members in the Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly as of the 2009 assembly elections.3 The party has one member in the federal parliament lower house, the Lokh Sabha.4 It was reported to have had 95 plus members elected to municipal bodies throughout Andhra Pradesh in 2006. The party‟s support base is largely Muslims in Hyderabad and in the Muslim dominated villages of the state.5 6 In April 2010, the Communalism Watch website criticised the MiM for encouraging polarisation similar to the Hindu nationalist BJP party. It argues that the MiM‟s mobilisation of the Muslim community is not done to demand educational facilities, political empowerment or other social issues relevant to the minority community. Rather Muslims are mobilised in a way that “continues to keep the community under the spell of 1 „The History of Majlis e Ittehadul Muslimeen Party in Andhra Pradesh, India‟ 2006, Hyderabad online, 11 November http://www.nowpublic.com/the_history_of_majlis_e_ittehadul_muslimeen_party_in_andhra_pradesh_india – Accessed 16 December 2010 – Attachment 1 2 Mitta, M.
