The 2020-2021 Grandy Primary School Year

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are so excited to reunite students and staff at Grandy Primary School! It took a lot of people working hard behind the scenes to ensure your child and our staff will be provided with a safe, learning environment. For those of you who have been through GPS, you know that we love to build positive relationships with parents, students and the Camden community. Our mission is for students to develop a love for learning, build a solid academic foundation, and have them prepare for their future.

We have been working hard with guidelines and protocols from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) to bring our students back. GPS will look and feel different until the restrictions are lifted. I promise you that your child will be loved and cared for while at school. As a principal and a father of two children, it is important to me that you understand that these restrictions should not be a reflection of our staff or this school. For us to educate students in the building and provide direct instruction, we must follow all guidelines and requirements to ensure the safety of our students, staff and community.

In this handbook, you will find many changes from past years. Some of these may be inconvenient to you, but we need your support and understanding during these challenging times. I look forward to the day when we can get back to business as normal at GPS. This community has always supported our school and we come to you asking for your continued support. Please work with us and be understanding as well as hopeful that things will change back quickly. Thank you in advance for your endless support.

Sincerely,

Timothy T. Lazar Principal

Parents-Please note that THE BUILDING WILL NOT BE OPEN FOR EARLY DROP OFF THIS YEAR. (STUDENTS WILL BE ABLE TO ENTER THE BUILDING AT 7:45.) ATTENDANCE Camden County’s attendance policy applies to all students enrolled in Kindergarten through grade 12. Whenever a student is absent, the absence is unlawful until an adequate excuse, signed by the parent/guardian, is presented. A note should be presented within two days after the student returns to school or the absence will be unlawful. Any student who is absent for more than 20 days shall not be promoted to the next grade. Special cases of prolonged illness, documented by a physician, will be taken into consideration by a committee (teachers, guidance counselor, administration, social worker, etc.) Attendance in school is central to educational achievement and school success. All children between the ages of seven (7) and sixteen (16) are required by state law to attend school regularly. Parents must ensure that students attend and remain in school daily. A student of compulsory school age who does not attend school is in violation of the law and the student and his/her parent(s)/guardians are subject to its penalties. Appropriate staff will communicate with parents of absent and truant students. It is important students mark their attendance daily.

*ATTENDANCE UNDER PLAN “A” Attendance will be taken at GPS on the 4 days of the week that your child comes to school under Plan A. Students/Parents must complete the attendance form on Wednesdays (the remote learning day), through Google Classroom or by a Class DOJO link provided by your teacher, by 9:00 a.m. to ensure they are marked present for the day. If the form is not filled out, your child will be marked absent for that day.

Accumulated Excused Absences 1. The teacher and/or guidance counselor will attempt to make contact with the parent/guardian regarding excessive excused absences. 2. The school social worker will become involved if the teacher or guidance counselor is unable to make contact. 3. If a student's excessive excused absences begin to affect academic progress, the parent will be notified by the Social Worker that doctor’s notes will be required for all future absences. A conference will also be scheduled with the parent/guardian of the student, the Social Worker, classroom teacher, and administration to discuss the policy. Any absences after this point that are not accompanied with a doctor’s note will be coded as unexcused. 4. If the student reaches 10 unexcused absences the Social Worker will determine if the parent/guardian will go before the Juvenile Attendance Council.

Satisfactory evidence of excused absences- provide documentation to the teacher upon the student’s return to school) ● Illness or Injury ● Death in immediate family of the child ● Medical or Dental appointment (note from doctor) ● Court or administrative proceedings ● Religious Observation ● Absence related to deployment activities ● Educational opportunity (prior approval must be granted)

Unexcused Absences ● 3 absences- parent is notified of excessive absences ● 6 absences- parent notified via mail ● Conference may be requested ● Referral to the school social worker

Penalty for Law Violation- Any parent, guardian or other person violating the provisions of the Compulsory Attendance Law is guilty of a class 1 misdemeanor. (G.S. 115C-380)

UNEXCUSED ABSENCES (may include, but not limited to the following:) ● Missing the bus ● Babysitting ● Oversleeping ● Inclement weather ● Family Trips (excluding military)

TARDY AND TRUANT STUDENTS Students who come to school after 8:15 a.m. are tardy. Parents must sign their child into school in the front lobby. Students who are tardy or do not attend school without parental or school consent will be considered truant. Truancy is a violation of both State and local law and is a serious offense. Continued truancy may result in legal action and/or referral to Child Services. ● Elementary students must be accompanied by parent/guardian inside the school ● Excessive tardiness/early dismissals will be reported to the school Social Worker ● Continued non-compliance may result in notification to Department of Social Services, the District Attorney, and/or Juvenile Court

*ENTERING THE BUILDING WHEN TARDY If your child is tardy, please ring the bell to enter the building. A member of the GPS staff will come and take your temperature as well as your child's temperature and then ask the required screening questions. If you pass the screening, you will be allowed to enter the building. You will need to sign your child into school in the book located on the table in the front lobby. Your child will receive a tardy slip and walk to class on their own. Only one family is allowed in the building at a time. All others will be asked to remain socially distanced outside the building. Our goal is to greet you with the same customer service and warmth that you have come to expect from our team! Parents will not be allowed to walk students to class.

*RECOMMENDATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS The decisions for how to best open Grandy Primary School are based on the guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). GPS will comply with all requirements for social distancing to minimize exposure to continue to keep our students and staff safe during this pandemic.

Under Plan A, students are not required to maintain a social distance of 6 feet in the classroom, on the playground, and on the bus. At Grandy Primary School, we will work diligently to maintain social distance. However, students may be less than 6 feet for more than 15 minutes. It is important to know that if a student tests positive and your child has been exposed they will have to go home for 14 days.

We ask you to take some time to familiarize yourself with the important information contained in this guide. As you do so, please know that our care and concern for your child’s safety and learning is present in all that we do - always! We will continuously update our plan as restrictions are lifted throughout the state.

*CLEANING Buildings will be cleaned and disinfected multiple times throughout the day. Our staff will be cleaning and disinfecting high-touch surfaces: bathroom floors, sinks, toilets, urinals, and stall handles; monitoring hand sanitizer, soap, and paper products. Our disinfectant is an EPA-approved disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Current cleaning and disinfecting protocols will continue to be reviewed and enhanced in terms of frequency and intensity. The school building, classrooms and student materials will be thoroughly cleaned on Wednesdays.

TEACHING AND LEARNING It’s our core belief that all students deserve to be challenged and engaged in relevant, rigorous, and meaningful learning each day. This school year, regardless of which learning path your child is on, he/she will be taught rigorous content every day. Lessons will align with North Carolina’s grade-level Standard Course of Study. READING EXPECTATIONS The State mandates that schools must choose a nationally normed assessment to show reading growth. Grandy Primary School students will be assessed using IStation. It uses a Nationally Normed Indicator of Progress (ISIP) to measure student growth. Web based reporting provides formative insight to guide individual instruction. Since these tests are computerized it is imperative that all students do their best. They may not know all of the answers however they are not expected to. Some questions may be easy while others may be difficult. Grandy Primary School has purchased the IStation Program that coincides with these assessments, allowing students to practice the exact skills they need extra practice with. Please have your child complete the ISIP assessment each month on their own so the program will be able to provide individualized learning based on your child’s specific needs. OTHER IMPORTANT INFORMATION- READ TO ACHIEVE STATE LAW A student may only be retained once in grade span K-3 except in the event the student fails the rd End-of-Grade test in 3 grade. The North Carolina Read to Achieve Initiative requires all third graders who are not proficient on the End-of-Grade Reading Test to partake in the following process unless they have a Good Cause Exemption: ● The student must take the Read to Achieve Reading Test. If they are proficient on the reading test, they are promoted to fourth grade. ● If the student does not score proficient on the Read to Achieve Test they will be administered a retest of the EOG Reading Test. If a child is not proficient on the re-test, your son or daughter will be invited to a summer reading camp to help them improve their reading skills. This camp is at no cost to the parents. During this time, students will also continue to work on their State Reading Portfolio. (A complete portfolio is a good cause exemption.) ● At the end of summer reading camp, your child’s reading will be retested with another Read to th Achieve Test. If he or she tests proficient, your child will be eligible to be promoted to 4 grade. If your child does not score proficient at the end of summer reading camp, he or she will be placed in a 4th grade class the following year with a third-grade retention label. Ninety minutes of uninterrupted reading instruction will be provided daily in these classes. Your child will be rd eligible to retake the 3 Grade Read to Achieve Test in late October to achieve a mid-year promotion and have the third-grade retention label removed. Your child will remain in the same fourth grade class for the entire school year and continue to receive the uninterrupted reading th instruction throughout 4 grade to support ongoing improvement in reading skills. SCHOOL DISCIPLINE The 1997 Safe School legislation required each school system and individual school to address school safety. As a part of this safety plan, Grandy Primary School developed a School Discipline Plan. The following pages of this handbook include the Camden County Board of Education Policies regarding student behavior and Grandy Primary’s School Discipline Plan. Please read and discuss them with your child. For optimal learning, our school must be safe, secure, and orderly. A climate of respect and appropriate personal conduct are a priority for all students and all school personnel. Parents, students, and staff must work as a team to ensure a positive, safe, learning environment. Thank you for your help in providing the best educational experience possible for your child.

GRANDY PRIMARY SCHOOL DISCIPLINE PROCEDURES: Our school diligently seeks to provide an atmosphere that positively promotes learning for all students. Education is the primary purpose for a public school. Behavior that violates the rules of student conduct established in Board Policy and behavior that distracts from a student’s ability to profit from instruction or infringes upon the rights of others at school warrants disciplinary action. The intent of any disciplinary action is to bring about a positive change in the student’s behavior. Any successful school discipline plan must have the support of parents. Therefore, we ask that you support our efforts to provide an environment that is free of behaviors that distract from teaching and learning.

PROCEDURES FOR ALL GRANDY PRIMARY STUDENTS: 1. Follow the directions by all school personnel. 2. Come to school prepared each day, (pencil, paper, books, homework, etc.) 3. Keep hands, feet, and objects to yourself. 4. Do not disrupt the education of others. 5. Be courteous and respectful in your words and actions to others. 6. Prepare for your future every day. Every teacher has a classroom behavior plan that outlines positive, appropriate behavior for your child. The plan also outlines consequences to help ensure that student learning is not disrupted. Teachers will communicate the classroom expectations to you & your child. In addition, they will communicate your child’s behavior daily/weekly. Please discuss appropriate behavior with your child.

Behavior that violates the rules of student conduct established in Board Policy and behavior that detracts from a student’s ability to profit from instruction or that infringes upon the rights of others at school may warrant further disciplinary action.

Behaviors that can result in immediate referral to the office and/or suspension from school: ● Fighting ● Biting ● Horseplay ● Tantrums ● Physical Harm to Others ● Profanity ● Cheating ● Verbal Abuse ● Disrespect to Adults ● Chronic Disruptive Behaviors ● Leaving Classroom without Permission ● Threats ● Throwing Objects ● Stealing ● Inappropriate Dress ● Destruction of School Property ● Bullying ● Bringing inappropriate items to school ● Possession of a weapon or dangerous instrument ● Any other severe disruptive/dangerous behavior **The principal and assistant principal will handle discipline cases on an individual basis and in compliance with the discipline procedures outlined below. Final consequence(s) will be determined by the administration on an individual basis. Any behavior that warrants suspension will be deemed severe if the student has repeatedly ignored school rules and consequences.

CONSEQUENCES It is our goal that students learn appropriate behavior from their mistakes. It is important that students at this age learn right from wrong. We believe consequences should fit the action. The following are examples, but not limited to, the consequences that may be implemented : ● Time Out in another classroom ● Time Out in the office ● Loss of privileges ● Silent lunch ● Make restitution ● Parent phone call ● Parent teacher conference ● Administrative Conference with the parent ● Note home ● Organized recess ● Referral to Student Assistance Team (SAT) ● Individualized Behavior Plan (BIP) ● Extended parent observations in the school setting ● In School Suspension (ISS) ● After School Detention ● Out of School Suspension (OSS) * As you look at the list of consequences above, suspension is our last resort. Please support our efforts and strategies in keeping kids in a positive learning environment.

GRANDY PRIMARY SCHOOL NON-DISCIPLINE GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES Grandy Primary School is committed to the principle of due process and to finding orderly, equitable solutions to problems affecting our students and parents. It is essential to the resolution of grievances that all parties be given the opportunity to state and express opinions without fear or repercussion. Every effort shall be made by all parties to resolve grievances at the lowest level.

PROCEDURES A: Informal-If a student or parent believes they have just cause to file a grievance; the matter should first be discussed between the involved parties in an attempt to resolve the issue(s). B: Formal-If the matter is not resolved to the satisfaction of the aggrieved person(s) through informal discussion the matter should be discussed with the Principal or designee with both parties present. It is the responsibility of the person(s) filing the grievance to contact the Principal within 5 calendar days of the facts giving rise to it. After the Principal receives notification of a grievance, it shall be his/her responsibility to contact and arrange a meeting with both parties present in an effort to resolve the issue(s). If the matter(s) cannot be resolved at the school level, then the Camden County Board of Education grievance procedures should be followed as outlined in the policy handbook.

TRANSPORTATION Contact Information Director: Britton Overton (252)335-0831 Ext. 116 Assistant: Wendy Wheeler (252)335-0831 Ext. 117

*Parents of students under plan “A” filled out the transportation form indicating if their child would be a car rider or a bus rider. These forms have helped us create bus routes. In an effort to maintain a safe environment on the buses, we are trying to limit the number of daily bus changes. If you need to make any changes in your child’s bus transportation please send a note in with your child. We need to keep this on file.

*Students must wear masks on the school bus. In an effort to keep students clustered they will be given assigned seats on the bus. Siblings that live in the same house will sit together. No transportation changes can be made after 1:00. *Hand sanitizer will be available on all school transportation vehicles for safe use by employees and students. Touch points, including doors and windows, grab handles, arm rests, hard seats, door handles, and seat belt buckles, will be cleaned and disinfected between each bus run with an EPA-approved disinfectant for SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19.

* BUS SCREENING PROCEDURES ● A parent or guardian must be at the bus stop each morning to put their child on the bus. ● Parents will be responsible for checking their children each morning BEFORE they get on the bus for signs of illness, such as fever of 100.4 or greater, cough, sore throat, body aches, chills, diarrhea, vomiting, or new loss of taste or smell. ● Students must stay home from school if they have any signs of illness, or have recently been diagnosed with COVID-19, OR have recently been in close contact with someone diagnosed with COVID-19. Students may not return to school until they meet the criteria for return, as recommended by the CDC and NCDHHS. ● Parents will be provided with a packet of daily screening attestation forms, also referred to as “Golden Tickets.” Parents are required to complete a ticket for each child, daily, before they get on the bus. Students must give this ticket to the bus driver upon boarding the bus. This is your acknowledgement to the three questions students must answer each morning. If you answer yes to any of these questions your child must remain at home. To help keep our community and school safe parents are asked to contact the school nurse to let them know.

Yes No

______Has your child had close contact (within 6 ft for at least 15 minutes) in the last 14 days with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, or has any health department or health care provider been in contact with you and advised you to quarantine?

______Does your child have any symptoms: fever, chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new cough, new loss of taste or smell?

______Since your child was last at school, have they been diagnosed with COVID-19?

● Upon arrival at school, students will have their temperatures checked by designated school staff as the buses are unloaded. ● If their temperature is 100.3 or lower, the student will proceed to the classroom. ● If the temperature is 100.4 or greater, the student will proceed to the gym for a temporary cool down period. ● After the appropriate amount of time, school staff will recheck the student’s temperature. If the temperature remains 100.4 or greater, the student will be sent to the isolation room for the parent to be contacted. Parents MUST come to pick up their child immediately. Staff will follow the Symptom Positive Protocol. ● If the student’s temperature is less than 100.4 at the recheck, the child will proceed to the classroom.

*BEHAVIOR ON THE BUS Positive behavior on the bus is critical. We have worked with parents and students in the past when behaviors have developed. Due to COVID -19 it is even more important for students to follow policies, procedures and remain in their personal space while on the bus. In an effort to keep students safe on the bus, we have to follow the guidelines that are being set. It is critical your child follows the bus procedures and remains in their assigned seats. Buses will be cleaned and sanitized after each run so it is cleaned and ready for the run.

MISCONDUCT ON A SCHOOL BUS Again, School transportation service is a privilege, not a right. Students, at all times, while riding a school bus or in other school vehicles shall observe the directives of the school bus driver. BUS REGULATIONS Bus transportation to and from school is a privilege, not a right. For students to enjoy this privilege, their behavior on the bus must contribute to the safe operation of the bus. The following procedures are to assure bus safety: 1. All students will ride the bus home unless the teacher has been notified of other arrangements. If you need to make any changes, please notify the school BEFORE 1:00 PM to ensure your child arrives home as expected. 2. Only items approved as necessary for school are to be brought onto the bus. For safety reasons, science projects or glass containers cannot be transported on the bus. The office will sign the note and make a record of the change. The note should request permission for the child to ride the unassigned bus. The note is needed to ensure the correct transportation of your child. When making your request, please make sure you have the bus number, the drop off address, and the person your child will be riding with. PLEASE remember that we will not be making changes after 1:00.

Student Drop Offs If your child is a drop off in the morning, you will be required to read a sign containing the following three questions: 1. Has your child had close contact (within 6 ft for at least 15 minutes) in the last 14 days with someone diagnosed with COVID-19, or has any health department or health care provider been in contact with you and advised you to quarantine? 2. Does your child have any symptoms: fever, chills, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, new cough, new loss of taste or smell? 3. Since your child was last at school, have they been diagnosed with COVID-19? If you can answer NO to all three of these questions then we are asking that you give us a “Thumbs Up.” After that your child will get their temperature checked. If a child has a temperature of 100.4 or higher you will be asked to park in the cool down zone in the front parking lot. Your child will be checked again. If they are still 100.4, or higher, they will not be allowed in the building. If you answer “Yes’ to any of the questions then we will ask you to take your child home until your child is symptom free. This year we will have a different routine for student drop off. In an effort to make drop off run smoothly, please make sure your child is ready to exit the car when they get to the front of the building. Your child must unbuckle themselves and open their own car door.

AFTERNOON CAR RIDER PICK UP PROCEDURES Students are released for pick-up at 3:00 p.m. We have two lanes of traffic. The first lane closest to the curb (right lane) is for 1st & 3rd grade students. They will be picked up at the cafeteria door. The second lane (left lane) is for K & 2nd grade students to be picked up at the front lobby door. If you have children to be picked up at both doors please use the right lane. A staff member will guide you from the left to the right lane as soon as possible. Please allow the staff on duty to do their job to ensure safety for all those involved.

EARLY PICKUPS/CHANGES IN TRANSPORTATION It is encouraged that your child remain at school all day as teachers provide instruction throughout the entire day. If you need to pick up your child prior to dismissal, we ask that you do so BEFORE 1:00 as the traffic and end of day procedures can get hectic. We also need to ensure we provide social distancing during our afternoon pickups. This is going to be very important this year. Also, for the safety of your child and to ensure your child goes home correctly, if you are requesting a change in transportation you must do so BEFORE 1:00. We need to make sure we have enough seats on the bus.

APPOINTMENTS We understand that your child may have a scheduled medical appointment and must be picked up. Please ring the bell to enter the building and report directly to the office. At this time, you will have your temperature taken and will be asked the required attestation questions. You will sign your child out of school. We will call for your child. Please wait for your child in the lobby. If your child is returning to school, ring the bell and report to the office to sign your child in. You and your child will not need to be rescreened upon reentry. Your child will then walk to class on their own.

*Facilities ● Signage has been placed throughout the school to remind students to social distance and to wash their hands frequently. ● Floor markings and directional signs have been installed to remind students to remain 6 feet apart and to walk on opposite sides of a hallway. ● The GPS schedule will allow students to use the restroom one class and/or cohort at a time to practice social distancing. ● High-touch surfaces including bathroom floors, sinks, toilets, urinals, stall handles, classroom door handles, playground equipment, etc. will be disinfected throughout the day. ● Students will be expected to wash their hands before leaving the restroom. ● We will make every attempt to keep student desks 6 feet apart in order to lower the risk of transmission of any illness (Under Plan A six feet is not required but recommended). ● The sharing of personal items and supplies in the classroom such as writing utensils, headphones, etc., will be limited. Teachers will ensure that items are sanitized before sharing. ● Movement during the day will be limited and controlled. ● If students must share a desk from class to class, proper cleaning and disinfection of high-touch surfaces will be done between uses. ● Handwashing with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and/or the safe use of hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol by staff and older children will be taught and reinforced. ● Classrooms will be cleaned and sanitized following each day of face to face instruction. Thorough sanitizing and cleaning will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays. Hand sanitizer will be available to students as they enter and exit the building and the classrooms, as well as throughout the day.

*FACE COVERINGS Face coverings are required of all students from K- 12th grades, and all teachers, staff, and adult visitors unless they are eating or engaged in strenuous physical activity. This includes face coverings on buses or other school transportation vehicles and anywhere on school grounds. Family members may request a face covering exception for the following reasons: ○ Anyone who has trouble breathing or is unconscious ○ Anyone who is incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the face covering without assistance ○ Anyone who cannot tolerate a cloth face covering due to developmental, medical, or behavioral health needs For any request for a face covering exception or to learn more about the process, please contact Ina Lane at (252) 335-0831 ext. 105 to learn more about the process. Mask breaks will be provided to students when it is safe to do so. The staff at GPS will work with our school aged students to ensure your child is comfortable and safe.

*VISITORS At Grandy Primary School we have always had an open door policy. We take pride in building relationships with our families and community. With all of the current restrictions in place, we are asking only essential visitors to be on campus in an effort to protect the health and safety of our community. This will minimize the number of people in our school. As the restrictions change, we will continually update our policies. We know many parents like to walk their children to class. At this time, we have to limit the number of people in the building. Students will have to walk to class independently. We have strategically placed staff members throughout the building to assist your child so they will be in good hands! We will have an open house for parents and students prior to the building opening for school so you can meet your child’s teacher, see the classroom and take pictures! Teachers will schedule individual times with parents for their individual meet and greet.

CHILD NUTRITION Our child nutrition employees will continue to prepare food in our school kitchens following very strict food safety and sanitation procedures required by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), NC Department of Health and Human Services (NCDHHS), and NC Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI). All meals will be individual packaged for direct service to students.

All students will receive free breakfast and lunch until December 31, 2020. Even though students will receive free meals, it is imperative for all families to fill out the free and reduced lunch forms. These forms help determine money allotted to Grandy Primary School for our Title I Program.

Free Breakfast will be available until December 31, 2020. All students will have the opportunity to pick up breakfast when they arrive in the morning. TO GO breakfast bags will be available for students to pick up in the front lobby (for car riders) and at the interior entrance of the Gym (for bus drop offs). Also, all students will be given the opportunity to receive free lunch each day until December 31, 2020. Students will pick up lunches from the cafeteria daily. If you choose to send your lunch with your child they will not be offered the lunch provided by the cafeteria.

*WATER AND WATER BOTTLES In response to COVID-19, students will be prohibited from drinking directly from water fountains. All students are encouraged to bring their own bottled water or reusable water bottles. All water bottles should be clearly labeled with your child’s name. It is the students’ responsibility to keep track of their water bottles and take them home for regular cleaning. If students need water and do not have a water bottle, they may ask a staff member for assistance and a cup to get water from the faucet or a designated water fountain.

*SCHOOL SUPPLIES In an effort to limit the sharing of materials,we have provided each child with the supplies necessary to complete work in the classroom. These items will remain at school each day. Parents will need to have items on the supply list at home to complete homework and projects. We do ask that you send in your child’s headphones each day. Students will be transporting their homework folders, headphones, bookbags and lunch boxes each day. Individual teachers may ask for some additional school items for their class. Supplies such as wipes, paper towels, germ x, tissues, etc will not be required but greatly appreciated.

*COMPUTERS AND ELECTRONICS We need to collect all electronic devices for students on Plan A so we can have them in the school building for them to use when they are in class. We will be collecting them on Thursday, October 8th during Open House and all day on Friday, October 9th. Devices can also be dropped off on the workday, October 14th. Devices will be checked to make sure they are in working order. If there are any technology items that are not working, parents will be charged. This responsibility was outlined in the contract signed when the device was checked out. This will help Grandy Primary School keep all electronics purchased for students available for them when they return to school. We have a technology fee of $5.00 for the 2020-2021 school year.

MEDICAL EXPERTS We are grateful to have nurses in each of our buildings to support our students and staff. Each of them have worked hard to ensure we are following all guidelines. Nurses from different schools will be involved in the care of your child and will be providing medical attention while students are in the isolation rooms. When it comes to the decisions of sending students home, administration will defer to the medical experts we have in our building. They will be following the guidance from our regional and state consultants. Please understand that they must follow all guidelines and requirements.

HEALTH POLICIES AND PROCEDURES In our health program at Grandy Primary School the following guidelines have been established. 1. If a child is hurt at school, first aid will be administered and the parent will be contacted. 2. Every attempt will be made to contact a parent when a child is sick. 3. If a parent knows that he/she will not be at work or at home on a given day, please inform your child or send a note to the teacher where you may be reached in case of an emergency. 4. If your child is sick or has been sick and is not able to participate in physical education, please send a note to your child’s teacher.

ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICATION IN SCHOOL Many children with chronic disabilities or illnesses are able to attend school because of the effectiveness of their prescribed medication. Any student who is required to take prescribed medication during regular school hours should do so in compliance with the Camden County Schools regulations. These regulations shall include the following. 1. A physician shall provide written orders with the name of the drug, dose, time interval when the medication is to be taken, and diagnosis or reason the medicine is needed to the nurse. 2. The parent or guardian shall provide a written request to the nurse that the Camden County Schools comply with the physician’s order. 3. Medication must be brought to school in its original container. Medication is not allowed to be sent with students on the bus. 4. When the student does not regularly take his or her own medication, or if the parent or physician requests that school personnel administer the medication, provision shall be made for the medication to be kept in a locked cabinet. Designated personnel must be available to administer the medication at agreed upon times, and arrangements shall be made for alternate personnel to perform the task in case of absence. The school administration will cooperate with the physician, parent and child. In such instances, it is understood that the school bears no responsibility for safeguarding the medication or assuring that it is taken, and the parent shall provide a written statement relieving the school of such responsibility. 6. No over-the-counter – (nonprescription) medication including, but not limited to, aspirin, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, cough drops, medicated ointments/creams and/or other cold remedies, shall be dispensed or administered by any school personnel without a written directive from the attending physician. In order for designated personnel to administer those medications according to the physician’s directive, they must be brought to school in the original manufacturer’s container. Medication is NOT to be sent with the student on the bus.

INFECTIONS DISEASES AND CONTROL To help prevent the spread of germs, a child attending a school program should be free of infectious diseases. When symptoms of infectious diseases develop, it is imperative that the possibility of infection is recognized and alternative childcare be arranged. In order to accomplish this and safeguard every child, any child with any of the following symptoms is not permitted to attend school during the episode and must be symptom free for 24 FULL hours (i.e. no school the day after incident) past the latest sick episode. Please understand that the spread of illness, infection and outbreaks can be life threatening to some children, but are also preventable if you help us by following the regulations below:

● Temperature of 100 degrees or higher ● Vomiting/ Diarrhea ● Pink-Eye (redness, itching or discharge from the eye) ● Lethargy or unusual behavior ● Rash/ Infected skin or sores ● Excessive coughing – unable to participate in class ● Severe head pain to the point of being unable to function in class ● Rapid or altered breathing ● Any other issue the School Health Professional believes to be infectious.

Please do not give your child medication such as Motrin, Tylenol, Pepto Bismol, to hide symptoms so they can come to school. They will still be infectious, even with medication.

The School Nurse MUST follow these policies and procedures as directed by the Superintendent of Camden County Schools and North Carolina Department of Public Instruction Health Division, as well as guidelines set forth by the Center For Disease Control.

NOTIFICATION We have many students with severe illness and health issues. Please notify the school nurse at 331-4838 ext.230 if your child has any contagious health problems that can easily be spread or is home recovering from a contagious illness. Some examples may be strep throat, chicken pox, MRSA, rashes, FLU, Mono, Norovirus (Stomach Bug), lice, etc.

SICK STUDENTS Please have a plan in place if your child gets sick during school hours. It is important that all sick students be picked-up in a timely manner. Make sure all emergency contacts are updated.

HEALTH CONDITIONS/ALLERGIES Any child who has a confirmed allergy, inhaler and/or nebulizer or other health condition requiring emergency treatment must present emergency medication (Epi-pen, Insulin, DISTAT, etc.) and an Emergency Medical Plan from a doctor to the School Nurse on or before the first day of school.

IMMUNIZATION CERTIFICATE North Carolina law requires all students in a public school in the state to have a Certificate of Adequate Immunization. This form may be obtained at the Health Department or the child’s personal physician. A student may be temporarily enrolled for up to thirty days without such a certificate. A certificate must be presented within 30 calendar days of enrollment or the student will be withdrawn from school as required by North Carolina law.

STUDENT INSURANCE Parents may purchase school accident insurance for their children. School-time and twenty-four hour coverage is available. Students will be given an information sheet explaining the program, to take home to their parents. Parents who wish to purchase the coverage need to complete the form and mail it along with their premium payment directly to the company. The school does not collect insurance money.

Follow guidance on what to do when someone has known exposure.

SYMPTOM CHECKLIST People with COVID-19 have had a wide range of symptoms reported – ranging from mild symptoms to severe illness. Symptoms may appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus. If your child is experiencing any of these symptoms please keep them home. People with these symptoms may have COVID-19: ● Fever or chills ● Cough ● Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing ● Fatigue ● Muscle or body aches ● Headache ● New loss of taste or smell ● Sore throat ● Congestion or runny nose ● Nausea ● Vomiting ● Diarrhea

ISOLATION ROOM We have created an isolation room for students who display signs and/or symptoms of Covid 19. This is a safe and controlled environment where we can isolate students while they wait for parents to arrive. It is imperative if your child is showing any symptoms or not feeling well that you come to pick them up immediately. This is for the safety of your child, other students and our staff.

EXPOSURE If it has been determined that if a child has been exposed to someone with a reported positive case of COVID-19, that child must remain home for 14 days. Under the current guidelines, even having a doctor’s note or being symptom free they can not return until after the 14th day.

POSITIVE CASES If a child has been diagnosed with COVID-19, the student will remain out of school until 10 days have passed since the date of their first positive COVID-19 diagnostic test, assuming they have not subsequently developed symptoms since their positive test. Under the current guidelines, even having a doctor’s note or being symptom free they can not return until after the 10th day.

RETURNING TO SCHOOL A child can return to school when a family member can ensure that they can answer YES to ALL three questions: ___Has it been at least 10 days since the child first had symptoms? ___Has it been at least 24 hours since the child had a fever (without using fever reducing medicine)? ___ Has there been symptom improvement, including cough and shortness of breath?

REASONS A CHILD CAN RETURN BEFORE 10 DAYS AFTER DISPLAYING SYMPTOMS If a child has a negative COVID test, they can return to school once there is no fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines, they have felt well for 24 hours and all symptoms have improved.

A child can return to school, following normal school policies, if they receive confirmation of an alternative diagnosis from a health care provider that would explain the COVID-19-like symptom(s), once there is no fever without the use of fever-reducing medicines, have felt well for 24 hours and all symptoms have improved.

Documentation of a negative COVID test or other diagnosis from a doctor is required before your child can return to school before the 10 day isolation period has ended.

EMERGENCY PICK UPS We are excited to be back at school, but we have specific requirements that must be followed when it comes to the health and well being of our students. This year more than ever it is critical that you have a plan in place if your child is required to go home at any time during the school day. Please make sure your emergency forms are up to date. Thank you for working with us to keep our students, staff and community safe during this time.

STUDENT EXPOSURE While attending school or on the school bus, your child may be exposed to students or staff members that may have tested positive for Covid-19. If it has been determined by the nurse or school personnel that your child was exposed, they must be sent home for 14 days. Even though your child may not be exhibiting any symptoms they will be required to stay at home under the current guidelines. Each case will be different based on individual circumstances. The nurse has included Covid-19 guidelines for return to school in this folder. Please read it thoroughly so that we can help keep our students and staff safe.

PEST CONTROL The board is committed to maintaining a safe educational environment while also protecting the physical conditions of school facilities. To this end, the board will utilize Integrated Pest Management (IPM) Programs or incorporate IPM procedures into the maintenance program conducted by the school system. Pesticides shall not be used based solely on a schedule. School personnel in charge of pest management shall consider how and when pesticides need to be used to achieve the pest management goals.

STUDENT SCHEDULES Grandy Primary School will be operating on a 7-day schedule. In order to ensure that all students have the opportunity to attend all special classes, we are moving away from a Monday through Friday schedule. The benefit of this schedule is that homeroom teachers do not have to split their classes up and can attend specials as a homeroom. Due to the smaller class size, special teachers will be able to continue teaching the NC State standards through the special classes. This schedule also increases learning time in the classroom with less pull out time. The schedule will not follow the days of the week (Monday-Friday) but rather Days A-G (Day A, Day B, Day C, Day D, Day E, Day F and Day G). Since this is a rotation schedule, it is important to keep up with the days your child has Physical Education (PE) so that they can wear the appropriate shoes. The rotation days will be communicated through Bear Tracks and teacher communications/newsletters. We will follow each day in the rotation; A-G. Each Wednesday during remote learning does not count as a letter day in the rotation. If we miss a day of school (holiday, inclement weather, etc.) the very next day we return to school we will have the next day in the rotation. (ie: Tuesday is Day B & it snows Wednesday & we return on Thursday, it is Day C).

Schedules may need to be adjusted during the school year based on student numbers and any changes made by the Governor.

SCHOOL FEES In previous years we have asked for a school supply fee of $7.00 to help us offset supplemental tools Fees are used for supplemental tools such as Scholastic News, Extra Web-Site resources, and other items specifically requested by each grade level. We are not currently asking for this fee this year, however; we are asking for the County-wide Technology Fee of $5.00. This fee is required for all students in Camden County Schools. Parents are asked to please pay this fee as soon as possible. This money is earmarked to maintain the technology expenses at each school. TOBACCO FREE ZONE Grandy Primary School is a smoke free environment. Please do not smoke/chew or vape when you are on school grounds or in the County Park.

STUDENTS LEAVING SCHOOL EARLY No student shall be allowed to leave school early unless his/her parent, legal guardian, or individual (who has a written note signed by the parent or guardian giving permission to check the child out of school) comes to the office and signs the child out of school. Teachers cannot release a child until the office has notified them.

EARLY PICK-UP PROCEDURES It is important that students remain at school the entire day to ensure academic success. If you plan to pick your child up early please do so BEFORE 2:30pm. Students will NOT be released to parents after 2:30 pm unless there are extreme emergencies. (Frequent emergencies will be reported to the administration). Frequent changes and phone calls will be reported to the principal or designee for investigation.

Recess Students will have recess while at school. Classrooms will be assigned zones outside. Each class will remain in their zones and with their class. An example of a zone may be the kickball field, basketball court, or soccer field, etc. Our students will be using the playground equipment. Common areas on the equipment will be sprayed during the day.

Lost and Found IDENTIFICATION OF STUDENT CLOTHING, LUNCHBOXES, NOTEBOOK, ETC. Please write your child’s name on his/her book bag, lunchbox, sweater, coat, cap, and other belongings. A lost or misplaced article can be returned when it is left on the school bus, playground, lunchroom, or library if the owner can be identified. The lost and found is in the front lobby of the school. All articles not picked up in lost & found will be taken to a local thrift store.
