Port Taranaki Industries Monitoring Programme Annual Report 2016-2017 Technical Report 2017-105 Taranaki Regional Council ISSN: 1178-1467 (Online) Private Bag 713 Document: 1921869 (Word) STRATFORD Document: 1983005 (PDF) March 2018 Executive summary This report for the period July 2016 to June 2017 describes the monitoring programme implemented by the Taranaki Regional Council (the Council) to assess the environmental performance of the companies operating in and around Port Taranaki, New Plymouth. Port Taranaki Ltd operates Port Taranaki. Downer New Zealand Ltd and Technix Taranaki Terminal Ltd operate bitumen plants within the bounds of the port. Methanex New Zealand Ltd operates a methanol storage facility at the port, and New Zealand Oil Services Ltd provides terminal operation services involving the storage and distribution of fuel. The companies hold a total of eight resource consents, which include 60 conditions setting out the requirements that they must satisfy. The companies hold seven consents to discharge effluent/stormwater into the Tasman Sea, and one consent to discharge emissions into the air. In addition, Port Taranaki Ltd also holds a Certificate of Compliance with regards to air discharges. During the monitoring period, Port Taranaki demonstrated an overall good level of environmental performance. Downer New Zealand Ltd, Technix Taranaki Terminal Ltd, Methanex New Zealand Ltd and New Zealand Oil Services Ltd all demonstrated an overall high level of environmental performance compliance with the consents monitored under this annual report. The Council’s monitoring programme for the period under review included three site inspections of Port Taranaki Ltd, Downer New Zealand Ltd and Technix Taranaki Terminal Ltd, seven site inspections of Methanex New Zealand Ltd and four at New Zealand Oil Services Ltd. -

Localised population collapse of the invasive brown alga, Undaria pinnatifida: Twenty years of monitoring on Wellington’s south coast By Cody Lorkin A thesis submitted to Victoria University of Wellington in partial fulfilment for the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Marine Biology Victoria University of Wellington 2019 Abstract Invasive species pose a significant threat to marine environments around the world. Monitoring and research of invasive species is needed to provide direction for management programmes. This thesis is a continuation of research conducted on the invasive alga Undaria pinnatifida following its discovery on Wellington’s south coast in 1997. By compiling the results from previous monitoring surveys (1997- 2000 and 2008) and carrying out additional seasonal surveys in 2018, I investigate the distribution and spread of U. pinnatifida on Wellington’s south coast, how this may have changed over time and what impacts it may have had on native macroalgal and invertebrate grazer communities. Intertidal macroalgal composition and U. pinnatifida abundance was recorded on fifteen occasions between 1997 and 2018 at two sites at Island Bay and two sites at Owhiro Bay. In addition, the subtidal abundance of six invertebrate grazers was recorded eight times within the same sampling period. Microtopography was also measured at each site to determine if topography had an influence on macroalgal composition. From 1997 to 2000 U. pinnatifida abundance gradually increased per year, but its spread remained localised to Island Bay. In 2008 U. pinnatifida had spread westward to Owhiro Bay where it was highly abundant. However, in 2018 no U. pinnatifida was recorded at any of the sites indicating a collapse of the invasion front. -

Nearshore Marine Biodiversity of the Sunshine Coast, South-East Queensland: Inventory of molluscs, corals and fishes July 2010 Photo courtesy Ian Banks Baseline Survey Report to the Noosa Integrated Catchment Association, September 2010 Lyndon DeVantier, David Williamson and Richard Willan Executive Summary Nearshore reef-associated fauna were surveyed at 14 sites at seven locations on the Sunshine Coast in July 2010. The sites were located offshore from Noosa in the north to Caloundra in the south. The species composition and abundance of corals and fishes and ecological condition of the sites were recorded using standard methods of rapid ecological assessment. A comprehensive list of molluscs was compiled from personal observations, the published literature, verifiable unpublished reports, and photographs. Photographic records of other conspicuous macro-fauna, including turtles, sponges, echinoderms and crustaceans, were also made anecdotally. The results of the survey are briefly summarized below. 1. Totals of 105 species of reef-building corals, 222 species of fish and 835 species of molluscs were compiled. Thirty-nine genera of soft corals, sea fans, anemones and corallimorpharians were also recorded. An additional 17 reef- building coral species have been reported from the Sunshine Coast in previous publications and one additional species was identified from a photo collection. 2. Of the 835 mollusc species listed, 710 species could be assigned specific names. Some of those not assigned specific status are new to science, not yet formally described. 3. Almost 10 % (81 species) of the molluscan fauna are considered endemic to the broader bioregion, their known distribution ranges restricted to the temperate/tropical overlap section of the eastern Australian coast (Central Eastern Shelf Transition). -
