Short facts about the University: Founded in 1971 as a modern Reform-University by the province of Lower Saxony (in Northwest Germany)
Successor of an old teacher college founded in 1793 in Oldenburg.
Nowadays it has expanded the programs offered to become a larger, more diverse University serving over 11,000 students (full-time).
Currently, the University is organized into five Faculties (Schools)
(I) Educational and Social Sciences;
(II) Business, Economy, Law and Informatics;
(III) Literature, Languages and Fine Arts;
(IV) Humanities;
(V) Natural Sciences and Mathematics.
In 2012 the new Faculty (VI) "European Medical School (EMS)" will start with their Bachelor, Master and "State Examination" joint programs in a close collaboration with the "Rijks Universiteit Groningen" (Netherlands)
The University has two Graduate Schools: i) For Natural Sciences ii) For Arts and Social Sciences (But keep in mind that graduate schools in the German tradition are only for doctoral students and post-docs!)
