ADHRB is a non-profit organization that fosters awareness of and support for democracy and human rights in Bahrain and the Middle East. 2. ADHRB’s reporting is based primarily on its United Nations (UN) complaint program, by which it works directly with victims of human rights violations, their family members or their lawyers on the ground in the region to document evidence of abuses and submit this evidence to the UN Special Procedures. ADHRB has repeatedly requested permission to formally visit Bahrain in order to consult with government officials, national human rights mechanisms, and our independent civil society partners on the ground, regarding issues relating to the UPR process, but has been so far denied access. As yet, the Government of Bahrain has declined to cooperate with ADHRB on any level. 3. BCCS is Bahraini cultural center and advocacy organization based in Berlin, Germany. 4. He suffers third-degree burns across his entire body and is subsequently treated in the Traumatology Centre for Severe Burns in the town of Ben Arous. His self-immolation sparks demonstrations in which protesters burned tyres and chanted slogans demanding jobs. Protests soon spread to other parts of the country including the towns of al-Ragab and Maknasi in central Tunisia, and later the capital, Tunis. Videos of the Sidi Bouzid demonstrations are online soon after the protest began and the Twitter website carries extensive commentary of the protests.     School of History and Archaeology The Archaeology of Kuwait By Majed Almutairi A thesis submitted in fulfilment of requirements for a Ph.D. in Archaeology Supervisor: Professor Denys Pringle i Summary This thesis addresses the archaeology of Kuwait from 13000BC to the 18th century AD, to further understand its significances within the Arabian Gulf and wider world. Kuwait has witness many diverse cultures By comparing for the first time the archaeology, geography, and historical sources, I illustrate that this region has been continual inhabited and used as an important hub of social networks since its beginnings. By introducing the Ubaid civilization and their relations with other regions, we witness the first exchange and trade strategies in Kuwait. By looking at the burial mound phenomenon in Kuwait we witness a hiatus of permanent settlements and a time when people were more nomadic. The impact of these mounds resonated into later periods. Petroleum based substances play a key role in modern Kuwait; the Ubaid and the Dilmun first developed the usage of bitumen, and here we see how that created links with others in the world. Ideas move as well as people, and I demonstrate the proto-Hellenistic and Hellenistic periods in Kuwait to illustrate influences from the Mediterranean. Modern Kuwait is Islamic, and here we will investigate how and why and the speeds at which Christianity gave way to Islam, and the impacts of a different religion on the region. In highlighting Kuwait’s past, I show how the state became one of the most democratic and diverse places in the Arabian Gulf.

    Public Open Space on the Transforming Urban Waterfronts of Bahrain – The Case of Manama City Fuad Al Ansari Ph.D. Thesis Public Open Space on the Transforming Urban Waterfronts of Bahrain – The Case of Manama City by Fuad Al Ansari Ph.D. Thesis September 2009 Newcastle University School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape Abstract Public open space on the urban waterfront is a unique part of the urban setting of many waterside cities. Since the 1960s, more of these spaces are being provided in an attempt to bring more people to waterside areas. While some cities have been successful in striking a balance between their economic needs and the public‘s demand for access to the water, others have failed. During this process, the urban waterfront has become synonymous with the idea of public open space. In Bahrain, since the late 1920s, ‗decline‘ has become the predominant character of the relationship between urban centres and the water. Hasty urban, demographic and economic growth alongside extensive land reclamation and privatization processes has progressively changed the nature of the waterfront. Until the mid 1990s this process took place without sufficient consideration for the cultural and social values of the waterfronts of the Islands. The new millennium saw an even faster depletion of those spaces, which triggered public outcry. Currently, open spaces providing formal or authorized access to the water represent 3 to 8% of the Islands‘ shoreline. In reflection of this situation, this research investigates the physical and social nature of the urban waterfront in Bahrain in the context of the current urban growth and land reclamation processes.

The Special Rapporteur transmitted information to or received responses from 100 countries. He sent 164 urgent appeals on behalf of more than 470 identified individuals. Observations by the Special Rapporteur on the situation with respect to allegations of torture in several countries are included in the report. During the period under review the Special Rapporteur undertook two missions. The report on the visit to Azerbaijan (7-15 May) is contained in Addendum 1 to the present report and the report on the visit to Brazil (20 August-12 September) in Addendum 2.
