Under this initiative NRSP is using the Government of Pakistan’s definition of Poverty (in which whole population of the country is divided into four bands (called poverty bands) and trying to focus on the bottom three segments i.e. extremely poor, chronically poor and transitory poor groups. Objectives Main objectives of the study are following. 1) Information collection about the general socio-economic condition in the villages 2) Identification of the poorest households Methodology For the study purpose seven among ten revenue villages of the Union Council Bandhi were selected. Information was collected at two levels, i.e., village and household. For identification of poor households, the Pakistan Poverty Scorecard1 was used as it has proven to be most appropriate available tool. As this exercise required collection of information from each household of the Union Council, so a team comprising of 13 persons was given the task to do the household census using the Pakistan Poverty Scorecard. One team member was NRSP employee and remaining 12 youth were hired on daily wages specifically for this activity. Before starting the data collection exercise, a brief training session was conducted by Mr. Sharafat Hussain (Team Leader, Nawabshah) in NRSP Field Unit Nawabshah on 5th October, 2009. After the training each individual was given the scorecard formats for data collection. Every evening, completed formats were collected from the data collection team and randomly picked formats were re-checked every following day to ensure that information is collected properly. For village level information collection standard NRSP Situation Analysis guidelines were followed which includes Focused Group Discussions, transect walk and other PRA tools/techniques. A standard checklist was used to ensure all aspects of the socio-economic conditions are covered. In addition, secondary source data was also collected which mainly comprises of basic profile of the Union Council from the UC office and Census Report 1998. According to the Secondary source data total population of the Union Council is 13,226 in 1,945 households. Details are given in the following table. Name of Revenue Population # Households Village/ Mouza/ Deh Both Sexes Male Female 1. Deh 60-Nusrat 1,311 693 618 193 2. Deh 61-Nusrat 1,199 634 565 176 3. Deh 62-Nusrat 1,143 604 539 168 4. District Nawabshah comprises of five Talukas namely Nawabshah, Sakrand, Daurr, Daulat Pur, and Qazi Ahmad. Nawabshah was declared a District on 1st November, 1912. Introduction to the Area Union Council Bandhi comprises of seven Deh (revenue villages) with 83 small and large settlements. The UC Bandhi situated 5 and 23 kilometers away from the Taluka & District headquarter respectively. The area of this UC covers one side of the Nawabshah Sukkar road. The whole UC covered with plain area with fertile land. It has one of the best cultivated lands which are suitable for cotton, wheat and other agricultural crops. Its land is irrigated with the fertile water of River Indus. It has a big canal system associated with Rohri canal. But majority of lands are barren due to water salinity, logging and in some areas unavailability of water. On the opposite side of the road Amerji Union Council is located. Communication network of roads linking all villages of Union Council is very good. But many roads are not black top. The climate of the area is hot and dry. The summer season starts from April and continues till October. May, June and July are the hottest months. Dry, hot and dusty winds are common during summer. The winter season lasts from November to March. December, January and February are the coldest months. Rain fall is mostly during monsoon from July to September. During winter season there is very little rain. Only 46.9 percent of the total land of all 7 villages is being cultivated. Village wise Area (in acres) Sr. Name of Mouza/ Village Cultivated Area in Acres % 1 Deh 60-Nusrat 475 950 5.0% 2 Deh 61-Nusrat 900 1,600 9.4% 3 Deh 62-Nusrat 1200 2,000 12.6% 4 Deh 63-Nusrat 400 1,300 4.2% 5 Deh 64-Nusrat 400 900 4.2% 6 Deh 65-Nusrat 200 1,300 2.1% 7 Deh 66-Nusrat 900 1,500 9.4% Total 4675 9,550 46.9% 3 Demography According to Population Census Union Council Bandhiin 1998, total number of households in the Union Council was 1,945 with a population of 13,226 persons including 6,994 male and 6,232 female. Average household size was 6.8 according to census report of 1998. However, during this Situation Analysis information for the Poverty Assessment was collected from each household and according to this information the present number of household in this Union Council is 2, from selected seven revenue villages, whereas the projected number of household were 2,565. Using the average household size of each village (given in Population Census of 1998) the present population of the Union Council is estimated at 16,671. Village wise present status is given in the following table. Rev. • Modernity, Locality and the Performance of Emotion in Sufi Cults
EMBODYING CHARISMA Emerging often suddenly and unpredictably, living Sufi saints practising in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh are today shaping and reshaping a sacred landscape. By extending new Sufi brotherhoods and focused regional cults, they embody a lived sacred reality. This collection of essays from many of the subject’s leading researchers argues that the power of Sufi ritual derives not from beliefs as a set of abstracted ideas but rather from rituals as transformative and embodied aesthetic practices and ritual processes, Sufi cults reconstitute the sacred as a concrete emotional and as a dissenting tradition, they embody politically potent postcolonial counternarrative. The book therefore challenges previous opposites, up until now used as a tool for analysis, such as magic versus religion, ritual versus mystical belief, body versus mind and syncretic practice versus Islamic orthodoxy, by highlighting the connections between Sufi cosmologies, ethical ideas and bodily ritual practices. With its wide-ranging historical analysis as well as its contemporary research, this collection of case studies is an essential addition to courses on ritual and religion in sociology, anthropology and Islamic or South Asian studies. Its ethnographically rich and vividly written narratives reveal the important contributions that the analysis of Sufism can make to a wider theory of religious movements and charismatic ritual in the context of late twentieth-century modernity and postcoloniality. Pnina Werbner is Reader in Social Anthropology at Keele University. She has published on Sufism as a transnational cult and has a growing reputation among Islamic scholars for her work on the political imaginaries of British Islam. Helene Basu teaches Social Anthropology at the Institut für Ethnologie in Berlin.

  • 2020–21 Commencement Program
Commencement UNIVERSITY OF COLORADO BOULDER MAY 6, 2021 One Hundred Forty-Fifth Year of the University NORLIN CHARGE TO THE GRADUATES The first commencement at the University of Colorado was held for six graduates on June 8, 1882, in the chapel of Old Main. It was not until 40 years later, on September 4, 1922, that the first summer commencement was held. Since the first commencement in 1882, the University of Colorado Boulder has awarded more than 350,000 degrees. The traditional Norlin Charge to the graduates was first read by President George Norlin to the June 1935 graduating class. You are now certified to the world at large as alumni of the university. She is your kindly mother and you her cherished sons and daughters. This exercise denotes not your severance from her, but your union with her. Commencement does not mean, as many wrongly think, the breaking of ties and the beginning of life apart. Rather it marks your initiation in the fullest sense into the fellowship of the university, as bearers of her torch, as centers of her influence, as promoters of her spirit. The university is not the campus, not the buildings on campus, not the faculties, not the students of any one time—not one of these or all of them. The university consists of all who come into and go forth from her halls, who are touched by her influence, and who carry on her spirit. Wherever you go, the university goes with you. Wherever you are at work, there is the university at work.
