Under this initiative NRSP is using the Government of Pakistan’s definition of Poverty (in which whole population of the country is divided into four bands (called poverty bands) and trying to focus on the bottom three segments i.e. extremely poor, chronically poor and transitory poor groups. Objectives Main objectives of the study are following. 1) Information collection about the general socio-economic condition in the villages 2) Identification of the poorest households Methodology For the study purpose seven among ten revenue villages of the Union Council Bandhi were selected. Information was collected at two levels, i.e., village and household. For identification of poor households, the Pakistan Poverty Scorecard1 was used as it has proven to be most appropriate available tool. As this exercise required collection of information from each household of the Union Council, so a team comprising of 13 persons was given the task to do the household census using the Pakistan Poverty Scorecard. One team member was NRSP employee and remaining 12 youth were hired on daily wages specifically for this activity. Before starting the data collection exercise, a brief training session was conducted by Mr. Sharafat Hussain (Team Leader, Nawabshah) in NRSP Field Unit Nawabshah on 5th October, 2009. After the training each individual was given the scorecard formats for data collection. Every evening, completed formats were collected from the data collection team and randomly picked formats were re-checked every following day to ensure that information is collected properly. For village level information collection standard NRSP Situation Analysis guidelines were followed which includes Focused Group Discussions, transect walk and other PRA tools/techniques. A standard checklist was used to ensure all aspects of the socio-economic conditions are covered. In addition, secondary source data was also collected which mainly comprises of basic profile of the Union Council from the UC office and Census Report 1998. According to the Secondary source data total population of the Union Council is 13,226 in 1,945 households. Details are given in the following table.
