Looking for an escape this weekend that the whole family can enjoy? Richland Library has just what you need. There is programming available for people of all ages, and the best part, it's free. Check out some of the featured events, planned for this weekend:

Around the World Peace Corps Showcase Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 10 AM - 12 PM Location: Richland Library Main Age Recommendation: Children; Teens; Adults Peace Corps members share their experiences working around the world. Learn what it's like to join the Peace Corps and see how people in other countries live through fun activities, cultural artifacts and mementos from their time in service.

An Authors' Showcase: Celebrating African Americans in Literature Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 11 AM - 1:30 PM Location: Richland Library Sandhills Age Recommendation: Teens; Adults Celebrate Black History Month with local authors as they celebrate their literary works with readings and book signings. Hear from Jaime Harrison, Catherine Fleming Bruce, Esther Clervaud, Fraendy Clervaud, Eric Davis, Ashlye Wilkerson, Brian Barr, Kym Davis Boyles, Savannah Frierson, Anoshi Hagood, Horace Mungin, The Board of Directors, Chauncey James, Rhudine Robinson, Rod Palmer, Jerlean Noble, Mary Bryant and Damon Fordham.

Getting Acquainted: Polymer Clay Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 2:30 - 4 PM Location: Richland Library Main Age Recommendation: Adults Get acquainted with a new art medium and have a little fun. Internet Safety 101 Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 3 - 4 PM Location: Richland Library Eastover Age Recommendation: Adults Learn why it's important to keep your physical computer safe and protect your personal information when using the Internet. Also, get tips for protecting your computer from viruses.

Multisensory Math: Fractions Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 3 - 4:30 PM Location: Richland Library Main Age Recommendation: Adults; Parents We'll be exploring hands-on materials and learning effective strategies from a certified Montessori teacher on how to teach math to children. The class will focus on using an intuitive, guided system that helps develop a concrete and abstract understanding of mathematical principles while having fun. Please call 803-929-3434 to register.

Poetry Out Loud State Finals Date: March 9, 2019 Time: 3 - 5 PM Location: Richland Library Main Age Recommendation: Children; Teens; Adults Winners of regional Poetry Out Loud contests throughout the state will compete. Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. It helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. This contest is organized in partnership with the South Carolina Arts Commission, the National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation.

Remembering Rachel Haynie and Isabel Whaley Sloan Date: March 10, 2019 Time: 3 - 5 PM Location: Richland Library Main Age Recommendation: Adults Several years ago, author and local historian Rachel Haynie started researching and writing a book about Isabel Whaley Sloan and her dance classes. Following Haynie's death in 2018, her friends joined together to finish the book. Barbara Yongue painted the book's cover picture, and Pat McNeely and Dr. Gene Atkinson of Orangeburg co-authored. At this special event, Richard Durlach and Breedlove from the Big Apple, will demonstrate, in vintage costumes, the Sloan and Simpson Zimmerman dance style. There will be a Sloan-style reception and a presentation honoring both Haynie and Sloan. Copies of the book, "South Carolina Dances with Isabel Whaley Sloan," will be available for purchase and to be signed by McNeely and Atkinson.
