And people have come to feel their griev- Eances as personal to themselves, and, similarly, the grievances of other people are felt to be the affair of other people. If a connection between the two is made, people tend to feel—in the prevailing apathy—that they are impotent to effect any change.’1 The year 1960 will always be remem- bered for the birth of a new social consciousness that repudiated this culture of moral apathy fed by resigned powerlessness. ‘Our political task’, wrote the veteran pacifist A. J. Muste at that time, ‘is precisely, in Martin Buber’s magnificent formulation, “to drive the ploughshare of the normative principle into the hard soil of political reality”.’ The method was direct action—nonviolent and determined. First behind the plough were Black students in the South, whose move- ment as it spread to a hundred cities and campuses would name itself the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (sncc). In North Carolina, the Greensboro lunch-counter February sit-ins began as quiet protests but soon became thunderclaps heralding the arrival of a new, uncom- promising generation on the frontline of the battle against segregation. The continuing eruption of student protest across the South reinvigor- ated the wounded movement led by Martin Luther King and was echoed in the North by picket lines, boycotts and the growth of the Congress of Racial Equality (core).2 Separately the Nation of Islam grew rapidly, and the powerful voice of Malcolm X began to be heard across the country.

Eliot Public Library: An American Commons is an exhibition and photographic survey of public libraries throughout the U.S. by San Francisco-based photographer Robert Dawson. There are more than 17,000 public libraries in this country. Since Dawson began the project in 1994 he has photographed hundreds of libraries in 16 states. From Alaska to Florida and from New England to California, the photo- graphs show a vibrant, essential yet vulnerable system. This exhibition, on view in the Jewett Gallery at the Main Library, April 9-June 12, includes approximately 70 black and white and color photographs. Among the images is a photograph of the Tulare County (Calif.) Free Public Library, in Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park, which was founded as an agricultural community in the 19th century by a group of former slaves. Another photograph shows a library from New Orleans, La., damaged in 2007 by Hurricane Katrina; this library remains closed and patrons must check their books out of a nearby trailer.     STUART TIMMONS’ CITY OF WEST HOLLYWOOD LGBTQ HISTORY MOBILE TOUR (2017 Edition) Introduction Welcome to Stuart Timmons’ City of West Hollywood LGBTQ History Mobile Tour. This tour was originally researched and written by our beloved late author/historian Stuart Timmons, and it is in his memory and honor we present it. In 2007 Stuart began developing a trio of walking tours of LGBTQ History in Los Angeles. He used his years of extensive research, interviews with living witnesses of history, and his experience as an activist and participant in the community history to create the tours. Stuart served briefly as the executive director and on the board of directors of the ONE National Gay and Lesbian Archives, wrote a biography about the gay activist and radical pioneer Harry Hay called “The Trouble with Harry Hay” and co- authored, with Lillian Faderman, the quintessential Los Angeles queer history tome “Gay L.A.: A History of Sexual Outlaws, Power Politics, and Lipstick Lesbians.” Stuart had completed tour documents about Downtown Los Angeles and Silver Lake, but was unable to finish his tour about The City of West Hollywood due to a severe and debilitating stroke in January of 2008. In 2015, a small team - led by Jason Jenn and with superlative administrative assistance by WeHo Arts Coordinator, Mike Che - helped Stuart to complete the tour, thanks to a grant from The City of West Hollywood’s One City One Pride LGBTQ Arts Festival for the 30th Anniversary of cityhood called “WeHo@30”. The original walking tour has evolved over the years to accommodate new information from various changes to “The Creative City” and in order to accommodate the Tour’s transformation into a performance art happening involving over a dozen colorfully costumed performance artists delivering the historical material on location.
