AN EMPIRE LEGACY For Immediate Release (June 22, 2010) Vancouver, British Columbia: In the timeline of any city there are places that become immortal in its growth, locations that become legend in the fabric of its local culture. Empire Stadium, located on 14 acres at the Pacific National Exhibition at Hastings Park in East Vancouver, is one of them. For 39 years, Empire Stadium captured the collective imagination of Vancouverites experiencing the thrill of a football game held outdoors on a warm September afternoon; or the hysteria of a once-in-a-lifetime concert; or the pageantry of a visit by royalty. The allure of Empire spanned several generations, and nostalgia for the memory of the open-air stadium that was once the grandest in the country continues today. Arguably one of the Top 10 wonders of the Canadian sports world, Empire Stadium was the setting of many historic milestones. Empire Stadium is the site of one of the most important moments in sports history – the August 7, 1954 ‘Miracle Mile’ during the British Empire and Commonwealth Games. The most famous event of the Games was the One Mile Race in which both John Landy and Roger Bannister ran the distance in under four minutes (Bannister 3.58.8; Landy 3.59.6). The race's end is memorialized in a statue of the two (with Landy glancing over his shoulder, thus losing the race) that stood outside the stadium until its demolition. The statue is now located near the south-west corner of Hastings Park at the intersection of Renfrew and Hastings Streets. -

1. Thank You to RBC This Punjabi Market Walking Tour is presented in partnership with RBC. Indian Summer Festival thanks RBC for being our Emerging Artist Partner and a champion for this project, created in collaboration with the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective. We are also grateful to Simon Fraser University, Langara College, University of British Columbia for supporting our festival. We are humbled to be able to take you on this journey, on the unceded Coast Salish territories of the xʷməθkwəy̓ əm (Musqueam) Peoples 2. Main Street and 51st Ave Gurpreet: A place full of spices, fit with fashion. Or cultural expression and social advocacy. Welcome to the Punjabi market in present-day Vancouver, British Columbia, located on the traditional and unceded territory of the Coast Salish peoples, specifically, the lands of the Musqueam Nation. Let's begin part one of the Punjabi market walking tour on the west side of Main street. Our first stop is the Northwest corner of Main street and 51st avenue. If you look up at the second set of street light posts, you'll see beautiful Musqueam band banners. Here to tell us more about the banners is Debra Sparrow: Debra Sparrow: I’d like to start by acknowledging that you're in the Musqueam territory and lands. Gurpreet: This tour is a collaboration between the Indian Summer Festival and the Punjabi Market Regeneration Collective. It features historical imagery, visible markers and several calls to action in hopes of uplifting the local community and businesses. Retail, demographic, residential occupancy, and changes to built structures indicate that gentrification has escalated in the past seven years. Long standing impediments to gentrification, including industrial manufacturing, social housing, and crime, are not deterring change in this area to the extent they once did. This thesis examines how public policy has affected these changes in Grandview Woodland. Public policies embodied in laws and regulations have the capacity to either encourage or dissuade gentrification; however, other variables also influence gentrification making it difficult to determine the importance and influence of public policy in the process. This thesis uses semi-structured interviews and a document review in a case study of Grandview Woodland, to gain a better understanding of how public policies can influence gentrification in a local area where gentrification was previously impeded. -
