During the process, I faced numerous challenges from the narrowing of content and focus on the subject at hand, to seemingly unjust legal and administrative circumstances. Dr. Jonathan Adams, whose gracious support, interest, and tutelage, and knowledge in the fields of both music and communications studies, are greatly appreciated. Dr. Gary Heald encouraged me to complete my thesis as the foundation for future doctoral studies, and dissertation research.

Rap music was born as a "do it yourself" art in which the "message" was more important than the music. During the 1990s, interest in the lyrics declined rapidly, while interest in the soundscape that those lyrics roamed increased exponentially. The rapping itself became less clownish, less stereotyped, less macho, and much more psychological and subtle. In fact, rappers often crossed over into singing. Hip-hop music became sophisticated, and wed jazz, soul and pop. Instrumental hip-hop became a genre of its own, and one of the most experimental outside of classical music. East-Coast rap TM, ®, Copyright © 2005 Piero Scaruffi All rights reserved. The most significant event of the early 1990s was probably the advent of Wu-Tang Clan (1), a loose affiliation of rappers, including Gary "Genius/GZA" Grice, Russell "Ol' Dirty Bastard" Jones, Clifford "Method Man" Smith and Dennis "Ghostface Killah" Coles, "conducted" (if the rap equivalent of a classical conductor exists) by Robert "RZA" Diggs, the musical genius behind Enter the Wu-Tang (1993), a diligent tribute to old-school rap.

  • Take Me Back: Ghostface's Ghosts
Take Me Back: Ghostface’s Ghosts Steven Shaviro [email protected] April 21, 2007 1. I’d like to begin with a track that was supposed to appear on Ghostface Kil- lah’s 2006 album Fishscale. Advance copies were all over the Internet, but the track was withdrawn at the last moment, I presume because of copyright clearance issues. You’ll recognize the sample: it’s from the Pointer Sisters’ 1973 hit “Yes We Can Can,” itself a cover of a song originally written by Allen Toussaint and performed by Lee Dorsey. 2. Ghostface’s track is simply called “Can Can,” and Ghostface himself is the producer. The backbone of “Can Can” is the opening rhythm track from “Yes We Can Can”: first we hear the bass line, and then the drums and the funky rhythm guitar kick in. This is looped over and over again during the rap. In the Pointer Sisters’ version of the song, we first hear the rhythm track by itself, making for a long introduction; finally, after about thirty seconds, this leads into Anita Pointer’s opening verse: “Now’s the time for all good men/ To get together with one another…” In Ghostface’s track, this opening verse comes in twice to interrupt the rapping: first in the middle of the track, and then again at the very end. But the sample (and the track as a whole) ends in a weird suspension, with the words “we got to…” In the Pointer Sisters’ version, these words lead to the triumphant chorus (“we got to make this land a better land/ Than the world in which we live/ And we got to help each man be a better man/ With the kindness that we give,” etc.).

  • Song of Myself: the Study of Hip Hop, Poetry and the Personal Statement in the Secondary English Classroom
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 2011 Volume III: The Sound of Words: An Introduction to Poetry Song of Myself: The Study of Hip Hop, Poetry and the Personal Statement in the Secondary English Classroom Curriculum Unit 11.03.04 by Matthew S. Monahan Section One: Introduction 1.1 Statement of Context As a sixth year veteran of teaching English, I do currently teach poetry; however, the New Haven School District English Language Arts curriculum allows little room for a complete unit dedicated to the form of poetry. The majority of lessons and class time I currently give to poetry generally focus on the teaching of specific literary devices and analysis (with a concentration on the acronym SIFT: Symbol, Image, Figurative Language and Tone). I do generally concentrate on modern and contemporary works. I look forward to the prospect of engaging all of my students through the inclusion of such unchartered territories (speaking from a strictly personal standpoint) of memorization, and vocal performance in the classroom. In the preface to his book Teaching Poetry in High School , Albert Somers states "that anyone can like poetry, that a lot of poetry is approachable and fun. And poetry is fun to do things with" (ix). This is what I look forward to most, discovering new approaches to poetry to both enliven and enrich the experiences of my students. My first year teaching at Metropolitan Business Academy (MBA), an inter-district magnet high school, I taught one section of creative writing. Much of its focus was the writing of formal poetry and of "free verse" (I am placing free verse in quotations because with this "freedom" came responsibility, specifically a number of criteria e.g.
