The Reputation Review: Taylor Swift's New Musical Journey The Reputation Review: Taylor Swift’s New Musical Journey By Owen Bertram Taylor Swift has been a driving force for nearly a decade in the music industry. She began her musical journey as a sweet, kind hearted country singer. Over the course of her first five studio albums (Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989) we have seen her evolution as she narrates past loves, heartbreak, her public image, family, and her childhood. We, as fans, have also taken notes on her changing views, her depictions in media, and her world-famous transition from country to pop. But her sixth album, Reputation, released over a month ago, is seen as darker, as she has dealt with betrayal and a changing image thanks to many celebrities. Her 15-track pop album experiments with synth pop and electropop and provides a new view of her life. Her lead single of the album, ...Ready For It?, details her fantasies about a man she loves, who she considers a “killer” and details his many relationships. This song peaked at #4 on Billboard Top 100. I thought that this song is very danceable and has fun lyrics. The second song off the album is called End Game. Peaking currently at #39 on Billboard, End Game features Future and Ed Sheeran, who explain the tale of a woman who seeks to be the one who the man relies on while dealing with fame and an infamous reputation. She also wants to become the one who is not betrayed and not like the others women the man had been with. I love how she addresses the difficulties of her reputation as well as trying to expand her vocal abilities with a new beat and two other singers. The third single, I Did Something Bad, explains her famous feud with Kanye. The fourth song, Don't Blame Me, depicts Taylor as soul-searching for the right man and wants to be crazy in love, referring love as her drug. She explains that she wants to lose her mind and not waste her time with someone special. I realised that the subject matter shows her maturity as an artist. The fifth song, Delicate, explains her passionate feelings for a guy while keeping in mind that every relationship she has been in is delicate. Look What You Made Me Do, her sixth song, has to be her most well written song on the album. She surprised us all when she shredded her image forever, giving us a raw, powerful new side of Taylor. She expresses her emotions about everything in her life. While it’s clear she worked hard on this single, I can only say that she has very good explosive lyrics, but I can’t grasp the music. It seems to be very confusing to understand the beat. On Billboard, it debuted at #77 and peaked at #1. Her seventh single off the album, So It Goes…, explains how she feels so trapped in a relationship with someone else. She also states that relationships fall apart into pieces. I love the dark, mysterious tone in this song as she explains how a broken relationship in the spotlight. Gorgeous, her eighth song, is explaining her pursuit of a guy who she loves. The song peaked at #9 on Billboard Top 100. I think Gorgeous has a fun beat that reminds me of the 1980s. Getaway Car and King of My Heart, her ninth and tenth songs, both speak of heartbreak. Getaway Car shows a romantic adventure full of freedom and promise until it all fell apart due to lies. King of My Heart explains the freedom of dealing with someone obsessive and finding the perfect person. Both songs have a techno-beat and both are told like stories with a climax and resolution. I thought both songs were fairly similar but they both have an appeal that is fairly different. Dancing with Our Hands Tied is the eleventh song from Reputation. This song explains the first time someone falls in love. This song is extraordinary as it shows Taylor reaching higher octaves in this song than we’ve heard before. Dress, the twelfth song, shows the mark left by a relationship and shows a bond between lovers. I thought the song is okay, it could be good for studying music. This Is Why We Can't Have Nice Things, number fourteen off Reputation, immediately shows off a carefree tone about rumors being spread by a friend. It shows off a little comedy when after singing about forgiveness, Taylor stops and laughing, like it wasn’t going to happen. This song makes shade throwing seem fun with its simple, silly beat and lyrics. Call It What You Want is the fifthteenth song from the album. Immediately shows off a humble tone and a heartbeat-like of rhythm. It is explaining after all the rumors and lies, Taylor feels more better about herself and doesn’t care about anything but her lover. I love this song as it shows a more acoustic sound and we really can understand more how Taylor is feeling in this period of her life. On Billboard, it has peaked at #1. New Year's Day is the fifthteenth and final composition off the album Reputation. It is very different than her other singles as it moves at a slow tempo and has less tech-inspired sounds. I believe New Year’s Day to be very emotional. After reviewing the album, I have came to the conclusion that the album is definitely different than all her others. While most talk about love, Reputation shows the darkness behind falling in love. I see from Taylor that no relationship will ever be a fairytale. I love her changing attitude towards life and how her music introduces an electropop sound. However, some of her songs don’t connect and it seems some of her songs exclude some of her younger fans. But overall, I believe this is fantastic. With quite a few of songs on Billboard, I know this album will get more the recognition it desires. .

Milla Berntsen (voice) Performance 2A Recital Performance Space, City, University of London 2 June 2021 4:45PM Keshi, “Drunk” from the album always (2020). Written by Casey Luong (Keshi). Casey Luong, professionally known as Keshi, is a 26-year-old American singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist from Houston, Texas, USA. He began his musical career by sharing his music on Soundcloud, where he eventually gained enough popularity to gain confidence to quit his job as a nurse and fly to New York City to sign with Island Records. He’s best known for his falsetto vocals and textural instrumentals in alternative, indie, and R&B music. This alternative/indie song is about feeling alone and missing being in love. The main character is left by himself while his friends are drunk, which causes him to think about his past lovers. It has a soothing moodiness to it along with a bit of playfulness in its melodramatic kick. I’ve chosen this song because I want to begin this performance by allowing the audience to layback as the song plays with both the high and low register of the voice. Let us take a sip, shall we? The Neighbourhood, “Stargazing” from the album Chip Chrome & The Mono-Tones (2020). Written by Jesse James Rutherford (vocalist), Brandon Fried (drummer), Jeremiah Freedman (guitarist), Micheal Margott (bassist), Zachary Abels (guitarist), and Danny Parra. The Neighbourhood are an American rock band that formed in Newbury Park, California, in 2011. They use the British spelling of “neighbourhood” in order to distinguish themselves from a band already using the American spelling of “neighborhood.” Their musical style is described as alternative rock, indie rock/pop, and some elements of electronic, hip hop, and R&B.

  • Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1
Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. KEY WORDS Latin poetry, pedagogy, popular music, music videos, song lyrics, Taylor Swift INTRODUCTION When I assign Roman poetry to my classes at a large research university, I re- ceive a decidedly unenthusiastic response. For many students, their experience with poetry of any sort, let alone ancient Latin verse, has been fraught with frustration, apprehension, and confusion.

Continuity in Color: The Persistence of Symbolic Meaning in Myths, Tales, and Tropes An Honors Thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for Honors in the Department of Literature and Philosophy. By McKinley May Under the mentorship of Joe Pellegrino ABSTRACT This paper examines the symbolism of the colors black, white, and red from ancient times to modern. It explores ancient myths, the Grimm canon of fairy tales, and modern film and television tropes in order to establish the continuity of certain symbolisms through time. In regards to the fairy tales, the examination focuses solely on the lesser-known stories, due to the large amounts of scholarship surrounding the “popular” tales. The continuity of interpretation of these three major colors (black, white, and red) establishes the link between the past and the present and demonstrates the influence of older myths and beliefs on modern understandings of the colors.

  • An Unforgettable Performance by the One and Only, Taylor Swift. Even Ten Years Later, the Memories Vividly Remain of My First Co
1 Lacey Silvers [email protected] English 1010 Kevin O’Donnell Final Essay December 2, 2020 An unforgettable performance by the one and only, Taylor Swift. Even ten years later, the memories vividly remain of my first concert at Thompson-Boling Arena when I was 8 years old. For as long as I can remember, I have loved Taylor Swift’s music. My mom would listen to her music as she cleaned around the house and eventually, Swift became my favorite singer. 2 Taylor Swift began singing with more of a country style and she has slowly transitioned into the pop genre now. She had released a few single songs, a Christmas music album “Sounds of the Season: The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection” in 2007, and one country album of music entitled “Fearless” (2008), before “Speak Now” (2010) was released. In 2010, when I saw her concert, she was doing the Speak Now album Tour. This was labeled as a country album; however, it was noticeable she may have been mixing in some pop throughout her music. I prefer her singing country style music but still enjoy her current pop music. She had only been in the music industry for a few years before making this transition of music style. Swift focused specifically on releasing music of the country genre from 2006-2010. The beginning transition point for Taylor Swift’s style of music was seen throughout the years 2010- 2012. Before her current albums, she sang solely country songs, and pop was a stretch for her original music. From 2014 on, pop is the only genre she focused on.

Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Traditional Funk: An Ethnographic, Historical, and Practical Study of Funk Music in Dayton, Ohio Honors Thesis Caleb G. Vanden Eynden Department: Music Advisor: Samuel N. Dorf, Ph.D. April 2020 Abstract Recognized nationally as the funk capital of the world, Dayton, Ohio takes credit for birthing important funk groups (i.e. Ohio Players, Zapp, Heatwave, and Lakeside) during the 1970s and 80s. Through a combination of ethnographic and archival research, this paper offers a pedagogical approach to Dayton funk, rooted in the styles and works of the city’s funk legacy. Drawing from fieldwork with Dayton funk musicians completed over the summer of 2019 and pedagogical theories of including black music in the school curriculum, this paper presents a pedagogical model for funk instruction that introduces the ingredients of funk (instrumentation, form, groove, and vocals) in order to enable secondary school music programs to create their own funk rooted in local history.
